Getting ready for P1

Let’s have some fun today with cutting and pasting.

Using scissors is a useful skill and one which is great to support the development of co-ordination, control and build strength in wrists and fingers (important for writing). Many children find using scissors tricky so lots of practice is important.

Today I would like you to look through magazines, newspapers or catalogues (supermarket leaflets are great) to see if you can find anything that you might think you will need, ready for starting school.

Try to cut these out and stick them onto a sheet of paper to create a shopping list.

Remember to write your name at the top and send us your picture to add to your journal

Outdoor Learning – Daisy Chains

Daisy Chains

If your garden is anything like mine there will be lots of daisy’s on the grass. If you don’t have any you could collect  while out for a walk.

After you have collected some daisy’s join them together wo make a chain.

While you are making the chain some questions to as are –

How many daisy’s have you used?

How long your chain?

Who has the longest chain?

Once you have made your daisy chain join it together and wear it as a crown, necklace or bracelet.

Have fun!

Story – The Day The Crayons Quit

Listen to the story of the crayons, what can you find out about them?

There are some ideas to think about below

  • Which crayons were happy 😀 and which were sad ☹?
  • Can you remember one things that each colour was used to draw?
  • What is your favourite colour?

Sorting items by size

In the picture below they are sorting buttons into different jars by the size. You can do this activity with anything from stones to leaves etc.
if using buttons or other colourful items this will also provide opportunities to talk about the colours as well as the different sizes. You could also encourage the children to count the buttons in each jar when complete.

Describe it to me game

Here is an activity to help aid your child’s language and communication skills. You and your child can take turns at filing the bag with a few toys and then describing what objects you have for the child to guess.

you can also use the bag to create your own stories! Give it a try.

Exploring feelings

Lets talk about things that makes us happy and draw a picture of it. It could be a favourite toy, person, food, song, story, activity or place?

To explore our feelings, you could sing “If your happy and you know it”, changing the lyrics to represent different feelings. E.g If your angry and you know it stamp your feet, excited…jump up and down, scared…hide your face etc.

How are you feeling today?

Outdoor Learning – painting with water

Painting with Water

This is a very popular activity in the Centre.

Raid your cupboards, huts, garages and lofts for old paint brushes and paint rollers. Fill a bucket with water and use the brushes and rollers to make pictures, write your name or even just colour in the ground, garden fences and walls of your house. Watch as the sun evaporates the water to revile a fresh blank canvas to start all over again.

Have fun!
