Getting Ready for P1

Good morning,

Many of our families have raised concerns about their child’s readiness for P1.  Starting primary school can be daunting for you and your child, but it marks the start of an exciting new chapter.  I want to reassure you all that we will be working closely together across the early level and much of the beginning of P1 will be about building relationships and establishing routines. Before you know it, your child will be making friends, learning new skills and becoming increasingly independent.

But how can you help them prepare for this big first step?

Over the next few weeks I am going to be sharing some ideas and tips on how you can help your child become more ready for learning.

This week is about supporting your child’s independence.  Let’s start with the basics: Getting dressed

  • Going to the toilet. Resist the temptation to pop your child onto the loo and wipe their bottom. It is better to get your child into the habit of doing this for themselves.
  • Getting dressed. Avoid clothing with fiddly buckles and buttons. It is also a good idea to have a few dry runs with the PE Kit.
  • Putting on shoes. Tie-up shoes might be a bit difficult. Go for shoes with Velcro fasteners if possible.

Remember to send in any video’s or pictures of your child’s progress.  We will add all these to their Learning journal when we return, to support Miss Sloan in the beginning of their P1 journey 🙂
