Primary 3 (17-18)

18.06.18

Today was Developing the Young Workforce Day. In Primary 3 we talked about how some pupils earned pocket money. We then got into groups and wrote a job advert for a chosen career. Some of us wanted to be Vets, Soldiers, Footballers, Teachers, Make Up Artists, Hairdressers and Holiday Reps. We had to think of the skills needed for the jobs and any special qualities which would help to do the job well. In the afternoon we went to the hall and listened to lots of different people talking about their jobs which was interesting. We got the chance to ask questions.

On Tuesday we were learning about the importance of having good mental health. We did some Mindfulness activities to learn how to help ourselves when we feel unhappy, mad, sad or stressed. We learned a new way to breathe and some fun exercises that we can use every day. We also enjoyed listening to a lady describing an imaginative experience of being with a friendly whale.

15/05/18

Today was packed full of STEAM activities. We investigated the effect water has on coloured ink and what happened when we mixed Primary colours together. We also made a Whirlygig colour wheel to see the effect movement has on pattern and colour. Then we planned a maze pattern and used it to build our own Marble Run Maze using a shoebox lid, glue and paper straws. We tested out our designs with a small marble which was great fun. Our designs worked well because we had measured the length of the straws we had to use and made sure the straws were wide enough apart for the marble to roll between them.

09/05/18

We used our hands and feet to measure objects in the classroom. We soon realised that the results were different for each person because we have different sized hands and feet. Now we will measure them using metres and centimetres to find out the actual size.

 27/04/2018

We were learning about World Earth Day. We had to paint land green and seas blue on a paper plate to look like the Earth. Then we wrote our Earth Day Promise and hung it under our Earth model.

These are great!  (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

Our topic is my Body. This week we have used the internet to research information about our skeleton. As a class we made a model paper skeleton. We had to put the bones together starting from the skull to the toes. It was fun.

Sounds tricky.  Did you use your Growth Mindset?  (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

This week Primary 3  have been learning how to sprint for short distance races and how to run at a steady pace for longer distance races. We had to do warm up exercises first and we really enjoyed the Group Hoop Challenge when the hoop had to be passed round the circle without breaking our hands.

26/03/18

In March we have been learning about Rights Respecting School article 2 which says that all children have the right to be treated fairly whether they are rich or poor. We supported the Sports Relief charity event on Friday by donating  money to come to school in our sporty clothes, taking part in a whole school dance routine, doing  a quiz, spotting the difference between 2 pictures and solving a homework coded message. The money raised will go to help make the lives of children  who are not as fortunate as we are better. We all had a good time!

Looks exhausting!  (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

22/03/18

Primary 3 have been learning about Change and Loss in Health and Wellbeing lessons. On Wednesday we talked about ways to cope with change or loss in our lives. We made Coping Spinner Plates to remind us of some of the different things we can do to help us cope with changes or losses.

16/03/18

After writing our own stories about an egg hatching we went outdoors today to find materials that we could use to build a nest. Before we went outside we discussed what kind of materials we should be looking for and why a nest would need them. After collecting things we came back inside and built a nest in our groups. We had to use mud to keep things together. After the nests were built we tried placing an egg in them to see if the nest was strong and sturdy enough to hold the egg and keep it safe. Each group thought about what worked well and what could have been improved. This activity fitted in well as this was British Science Week.

This sounds like a really interesting activity! (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

06/03/18

Lots of us brought our favourite book to school to read and many of us dressed up as our favourite book character. We did a Scavenger Book Hunt where we had to search in books to find items on a list. We had to write the title of the book we found it in, the page number and whether it was the word we found, or a picture of the item or both. It was a fun thing to do!

You all look fantastic!  (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

In the afternoon Rachelle from the Royal Bank of Scotland came to talk to us about money. We talked in groups about needs and wants. We discussed saving up for some of the things we want. All pupils in our class came home with a Goodie Bag which was much appreciated.

28/02/18

Today we were planting some potatoes. First we put compost into a plastic bag then we put the potatoes on the compost. Next we covered the potatoes with more compost until we could not see them anymore. So they will grow, we had to water them. Hopefully they will give us lots of potatoes to eat when they have grown.

I look forward to tasting them!!  (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

21/02/18

Our new topic is Polar Regions. We researched information about animals which live at the Arctic and the Antarctic during our computer time. Then we made penguins and displayed them on the Antarctic part of our display.

I love your penguins.  (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

05/02/18

Our class topic about Scotland linked well with RRS Article 30 which states that we  have the right to practice our own culture and use our language. We recited Scots poems, sang Scots songs like Wee Jeanie McCall & Three Craws, danced Scottish reels, listened to Scottish stories, wrote in Scots and researched on the Internet to find our family clan tartan where possible.  We have learned about some famous Scots and also found out how Scots people celebrate Burns Night.

25/01/18

As part of our Scotland topic we researched Famous Scots in our ICT time. Lots of us found information about Robert Burns and as a result we had a mini Burns Supper today. We sang Scottish songs and recited our Scottish poem. If we wanted we tasted some oatcakes and cheese, shortbread made by Mrs Howatson and had a wee dram of Irn Bru .

23/01/18

Primary 3 all performed the poem Twa Leggit Mice by J K Annand in front of  Primary 4 to decide the class winners. All children showed confidence and tried to put expression into their voices.Katie Yuille, Charlotte Dale and Andrew Cunningham were awarded certificates today for their performance which they were presented with during the Scottish Afternoon. All of the class sang a Scottish song with P1/2 & P2/3 which they enjoyed.

Well done to all of you.  You were wonderful!  (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

14/12/17

Yesterday P3 did a STEM Christmas Challenge. The pupils had to write a letter to Santa then fold the paper to make a paper aeroplane. We then went into the corridor and took turns to throw the planes. P7 pupils helped measure how far each plane flew. Mrs Turnbull recorded the distances. Jake Shaw’s plane flew 6m 93cm and Alesha McCulloch’s plane flew 6m 81cm. Everyone’s plane flew over 1m.

12/12/17

P3 used their reading skills to follow a recipe about how to make Owls on Toast. The children read carefully and made a wonderful snack using the ingredients. I think the best part of the activity was eating the Owl on Toast judging by the look on the P3’s faces. Learning is fun!

Learning can be tasty too!  (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

7/12/17

‘Tis the season to be jolly. Primary 3 have been trying jolly hard to learn some Social dances to do at their Christmas party!

Looks like a lot of fun! (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

29/11/17

Primary 3 did a science experiment last Friday with water, lemonade and raisins. They discovered that the raisins in water sunk to the bottom but the raisins put into the lemonade started to dance up and down, The bubbles in the lemonade attached themselves to the raisin and like a life-jacket made them float to the top. When the bubbles reached the surface they went POP and the raisins sunk to the bottom again until more bubbles attached to them. On Tuesday the children wrote their experiment report and made a super job of it. Well done boys and girls!

I was really interested to hear about this experiment.  There was some really good writing about it too!  (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

24/11/17

As part of our Health and Wellbeing we have been thinking about ways to put a stop to bullying. We discussed different things that happen and decided whether they were types of bullying. We discovered that bullying can be physical or verbal and thought about  what we can do about it if someone is being bullied. We made a class poster which is displayed for all to see on our classroom door.

23/11/17

The children were very proud of their models which they created with the help of a lot of very willing parent / extended family helpers! Thank you all for showing an interest and  making the afternoon such a success.

These look brilliant!  It is lovely to see so many willing helpers in the room too!  Well done.  (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

17/11/17

This was Anti-Bullying Week. We were learning how recognise bullying behaviour and things we can do to help the people who are bullied. We have created a No Put Downs Poster for our class display. The message of All Different – All Equal was well illustrated by those wearing odd socks.

9/11/17

Yesterday we made lovely owl shape pictures. They are going to be displayed around our classroom. We hope you will like them when you come to talk to Mrs Turnbull next week.

They are lovely!  (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

We have started learning the songs for the Nativity performance of”Bethleben”. Primary 3 will be singing in the choir.

6/11/17

As part of our Health and Wellbeing Primary 3 have designed a Success Box. We can celebrate any success of others by writing a short message to the pupil who has achieved something and putting the message in the box which is opened on a Friday afternoon. All children are eager to read the messages they get and see the reaction of someone they sent a message to.

This is a super way of celebrating success and showing others you appreciate them.  (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

30/10/17

We were learning about children having the right to have healthy meals. We watched a PowerPoint presentation then created a “plate of healthy food” using different collage materials.

Well done, folks!  (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

13/10/17

Many thanks to all who sent donations for the Ayrshire Hospice collection and for our class Penny War bin. The Penny War money collected  will be put to good use  for the benefit of the pupils at Dalrymple Primary.

12/10/17

This week we have been learning about symmetry. We investigated whether shapes were symmetrical by cutting and folding, using mirrors and we made beautiful symmetrical butterfly paintings. We also built symmetrical models with Lego and interlocking cubes.

What a beautiful butterfly!  Great models, folks!  (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

02/10/17

Last week Primary 2/3 and Primary 3 designed their own puppets then worked in groups to create their own puppet shows. It was good fun presenting our shows to the rest of the class and it really made us listen carefully to each other. Some of us found it easier because the puppets were doing the “talking”.

27/09/17

This afternoon we did a science experiment to make slime using body wash, shampoo and a pinch of salt. Everyone saw and felt  how the mixture changed. Some children were going to see if chilling their slime at home made a difference. We also investigated how to make a balloon kebab! We discovered that the cocktail sticks could go through the balloon at the top and bottom because these parts were not stretched so much by the gas inside. If we stuck the sticks into the sides of the balloon it went POP! It was good fun.

Wow!  That’s really interesting(From Mrs O’Driscoll)

22/09/17

We found out how to say hello, goodbye, please and thank you in lots of different languages then made a word cloud using the computer. We stuck some in our RRS scrapbook to illustrate Article 30 everyone having the right to practice their own culture and speak their own language.

21/09/17

On Tuesday Primary 2 and Primary 3 investigated shadows outside. We found that that we could not see shadows in the shade but we could draw round each others shadows in sunny areas of the playground. The shadows at 11 o’clock were longer than our real bodies. We tried to see if the shadow would be the same or different at 2 o’clock but unfortunately it was too cloudy.

14/09/17

Thanks to all parents and family members who attended the Open Afternoon. The children loved showing you all their hard work and some of the activities they do throughout the day.

11/09/17

In PE we have been learning hockey skills so we can play mini games. We know how to hold the stick, how to dribble the ball, pass to a team member and how to score a goal. We have also learnt how to be a defender and how to stop goals being scored.

01/09/17

This week we set our personal learning targets for Literacy and Numeracy. We can look back at them to check if our learning is on target.

Well done, P3.  You can do it!  (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

28.08.17

We remembered many of the articles from UNCRC and we illustrated them to create our Quilt of Rights. It looks good on our display board in the classroom.

22/08/17

During Literacy time each group did different active word activities. It was good fun!

Working hard, P3!  (From Mrs O’Driscoll)
