Miss Hunter challenged us to build 3D shapes today using only art straws and blu-tack.  We had to use our understanding of the properties of the shapes to help us.  The building in process:

These are some of our successful builds:

During our Developing Young Workforce Day we were thinking about certain skills people in particular jobs would need to have.  We carried out a carousel activity to brainstorm these skills.

08/06/18

We had great fun today taking part in UNICEFs Soccer Aid Playground Challenge.  Thankfully it was a nice day and we got outside to rotate around the activities that Ross and the RRS group planned for us.

31/05/18

Miss Hunter was very thankful to have some help from the P7s today when we were making our Viking longships.  They turned out amazing! 🙂

One of the finished groups with their P7 helpers.

24/05/18

We have been looking at other ways to display information and completed this Venn diagram as a class.

24/05/18

We have had great fun this week taking part in Walk to School week.  Not only does this help to keep our bodies healthy, it is good for the environment with less fumes being emitted into the atmosphere.

Monday – wearing sunglasses                 Thursday – crazy hair

Tuesday – happy shoes                                         Wednesday – odd socks

16/05/18

Today we used the big number board to help us learn the 4 times table.  We even managed to keep the pattern going all the way to 100 and we were very proud of ourselves 🙂

10/05/18

Mathew kindly brought in his dad’s Viking helmet for us to look at for our topic this term.

27/04/18

We started work on Information Handling in Numeracy today.  We had to create a bar graph by counting the number of letters in different words from our reading books.

Lovely work!  (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

Today also saw us all being split into our ‘Leading Learning’ committees to lead some aspect within the school.  We are all very excited that we get to take part in this rather than just a few of us 🙂

20/04/18

Today we finished our World Earth Day mobiles.  Each mobile has 3 promises for how we plan to look after the environment.  They look amazing when they are up 🙂

They certainly do!  Well done.  I like how you have used the recycling symbol.  (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

23/03/18

How fantastic do these Polar Region enterprising homework tasks look?  Well done everyone for showing your creativity in producing these 🙂

These are absolutely fantastic!  The photographs don’t do them justice.  They are even better in real life!  (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

19/03/18

We took our learning outside today.  After researching the lengths of different polar animals, we used a trundle wheel to measure the lengths of them out in the playground.  Although we had already compared the lengths in the class, this was much easier to see when it was marked out on the ground.

What a good idea!  (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

16/03/18

This afternoon we transplanted some of the seedlings we have grown. Fingers crossed you will see them soon in the planters within the school 😄

06/03/18

We had great fun celebrating World Book Day today due to being off on Thursday.  Lots of us came to school dressed as our favourite character:

You all look fantastic!  (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

Can you guess which book characters we made using wooden spoons and our challenge materials?

These are brilliant!  I can recognise them all!  (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

27/02/18

Today was our final session using the gymnastics equipment where we were using our travelling, balancing, rolling and jumping skills.

These are great pictures!  (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

26/02/18

We started learning about a new topic within Numeracy today – Length.  We revised the language associated with length and then Miss Hunter challenged us to arrange ourselves into height order from the shortest to the tallest.

As you can see, we didn’t quite get it right 🙁  However, after assessing the photo and discussing where we thought we went wrong, we managed to sort ourselves into the correct order 🙂

Good use of Growth Mindset everyone!  (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

21/02/18

We had the SSPCA come to school today to talk to us about the importance of looking after animals and pets properly.  We were a quality audience, participating when asked to and showing respect to others when they were talking.

21/02/18

Part of P2 Health and Wellbeing work this term has focused on the need to keep our bodies clean and healthy.  We carried out an experiment showing how easy it was for germs to transfer from one surface to another, which highlighted the importance of washing our hands to prevent this happening.

20/02/18

This afternoon we went to the computers to research a chosen animal from the Arctic or Antarctica.  We wrote down some interesting facts so that we can create fact files next week.

What an interesting topic this is.  I look forward to seeing what you have learned.  (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

01/02/18

We had our first session with Bryce from Kilmarnock Football Club today.  Everyone had a great time learning how to dribble the ball correctly through different games and activities.

We are looking forward to next week where we will be working on passing the ball.

01/02/18

We started our learning for our new topic ‘The Polar Regions’ today.  Everyone got the chance to help make the polar regions for our display in the class.

29/01/18

We have been continuing our work on Time by looking at o’clock and half past times on both analogue and digital clocks.

24/01/18

P1/2, P2/3 and P3 performed ‘Bonnie Wee Jeannie McColl’ at our Scottish Celebration.  Well done, all!  (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

Lucy was the lucky chosen one to recite our poem at the Scottish Celebration, and all the girls received their certificates during this too.

22/01/18

P2/3 have worked really hard over the last 2 weeks to learn their Scottish poem ‘Elephant’ by J. K. Annand.  We have had our class competition this morning where Mrs Wilson chose our 3 lucky winners:

Jenna Steele

Kymberly Colville

Lucy Campbell

Well done to everyone, but a special well done to these girls who will go to Mrs O’Driscoll and Mrs Hastings tomorrow afternoon and they will pick one of the girls to recite the poem at our Scottish Celebration on Wednesday afternoon.

Congratulations to all of you.  (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

16/01/18

Today we had Scott and Jen from ‘Live-N-Learn’ speaking to us about having a growth mindset and the power of the word ‘yet’.  We all have things that we are not very good at…yet, but with hard work and lots of effort we can get better at them.  This all fits nicely with our school vision ‘Reach for the Stars’ 🙂

12/01/18

Happy new year!

We have been really busy this week with lots of active learning on our new numeracy topic ‘Time’.  We started off by looking at the seasons of the year and creating pictures which show all 4 seasons in the one picture.  We then looked at which months of the year would be in each season, and made paper chains which linked in the correct order.  We also looked at special events that happen within each month to decorate each link of our chains.

13/12/17

P1 & P2 enjoyed a trip to the Gaiety Theatre in Ayr to see their pantomime “Cinderella”.  The children were all fantastic and an absolute credit to the school 🙂

08/12/17

We all sported our Christmas jumpers today for Cash for Kids Christmas Jumper Day.  All the money we raise goes to help disadvantaged children in our local area.  This links with our Rights Respecting Schools work and to article number 27 on the UNCRC.

Well done!  (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

06/12/17

We are trialling a new method during our writing lessons to help improve our writing.  Before writing anything on to paper, we write a sentence at a time on our whiteboard and get this checked.  This allows us to make any corrections quickly without having to rub lots of writing out on the paper.  After 2 weeks of doing this, we are becoming better at spotting our own mistakes when we go back to read it over with Miss Hunter, Mrs Hastings or Mrs Galbraith.

Great work, everyone!  (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

01/12/17

Happy advent everyone!  Flori was the first lucky person to open our advent calendar in the class.  Each day someone will be chosen with the lolly sticks and they will get to remove the bauble from the calendar and place it on our Christmas tree, before choosing a wrapped book which will be read that day at some point.

That’s a fantastic idea for an advent calendar!  (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

30/11/17

We have been learning all about St. Andrew and how he became the patron saint of Scotland.  We had a little St. Andrew’s Day party this morning where we enjoyed some Scottish foods and drink and then listened and danced to some Scottish music.  Mrs Howatson very kindly allowed us into the school kitchen to show us how to make shortbread, and once this was ready, brought it to the class for us to sample 🙂

17/11/17

We all got into the spirit of things today for Anti-Bullying week and came to school wearing odd socks 😁 Hopefully after the work we have been doing this week, we understand that ‘All Different, All Equal’ makes us the unique individuals we are.

14/11/17

We transferred our learning about 2D shapes that can tile into our ICT lesson this afternoon.  We had to use the select, copy and paste tools on Microsoft Paint to allow us to create a tiling pattern.  Ethan and Mollie even used the rotate tool to create their pattern using triangles.  We finished our patterns off by adding a colour pattern to them using the fill tool.

Very colourful! (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

13/11/17

Over the last week we have been learning about shapes that can tile.  We created our own tiling patterns using basic 2D shapes and then added a colour pattern to these.

07/11/17

We were learning about the history of Bonfire Night this afternoon and then went to ICT to create some fireworks pictures using Microsoft Paint.  Here are some of our beautiful pictures:

These are fantastic!  So colourful. (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

06/11/17

We have started rehearsing our Nativity this year which is called ‘BethleBen’.  P2 children have the opportunity to be the narrators this year with the P3 children being part of the choir.  We will be performing the Nativity on the afternoon of Thursday 14th December, but also at night on the same date when the upper school will be entertaining everyone with some carols.

03/11/17

P1-P3 girls had fun this morning with our Active Schools co-ordinator Ross and our parent helper Ruth.  They were taking part in Sport Scotland’s initiative “Active Girls”.

Lots of fun (and sweat!)  (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

30/10/17

Today our experiment about what can happen to tooth enamel if we don’t brush our teeth came to an end.  We have been watching hard boiled eggs very closely over the last week to see what happens to their shell when they are left submerged in different liquids containing different amounts of sugar.  This was to show us what can happen to our teeth if we do not brush them over a prolonged period of time.

Setting up the experiment:

Results after day 1:

Some of the results after 5 days:

The results speak for themselves and hopefully this will encourage everyone to brush their teeth on a regular basis.

Your eggs were disgusting, P2/3!  I enjoyed watching what was happening to them.  (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

05/10/17

Thank you to everyone for their contributions towards the ‘Penny Wars’ competition so far.  We used our counting skills to help Miss Hunter count the money we have gathered so far and we were really surprised with how much we have 🙂

Great job, everyone!  (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

04/10/17

We had great fun today doing all of our learning without using any pens or pencils to support “No Pens Day”.  We even got the chance to do our writing on the computers instead of in our jotters.

28/09/17

We had fun this morning creating our own puppet shows using some of the characters that were in “The Singing Mermaid” by Julia Donaldson.

This looks like lots of fun! (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

19/09/2017

It may have looked like a crime scene this afternoon however, the children were out having fun making shadow drawings after we read the story “The Gruffalo’s Wean”.  We hoped to go back out later in the day to see if the shadows were still the same if we stood in the same position, but unfortunately it turned very cloudy.

Someone has very long legs!!!  (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

12/09/2017

The children came up with the idea of seeing how much they could squash and squeeze into a box like the old lady in Julia Donaldson’s book “A Squash and a Squeeze”, who was instructed by the wise old man to put animals into her house so that she would realise how big it actually was for her.  They had great fun raiding the classroom for different objects for this activity 🙂

07/09/2017

We have been doing a lot of work in class about numbers and the number system.  P2s have been concentrating on numbers up to 100, while P3s have extended their work to look at numbers to 1000.

04/09/2017

The first book we read was ‘Spinderella’ which was a new Julia Donaldson book for many of us.

I haven’t read that one, either!  (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

We got to make spiders with Miss Hunter, while we made webs with Mrs Turbull.  You will be able to see  these spiders crawling around both classrooms during our open afternoon on Thursday of next week.

29/08/2017

Yesterday afternoon we joined with Mrs Turnbull and P3 to start our new topic…Julia Donaldson Stories.  This is going to be a Literacy based topic, looking at some of the stories she has written and completing activities on these.

We started researching Julia Donaldson to find out facts about her and her life.  This afternoon we completed a personal profile listing the information we found out yesterday.

I love Julia Donaldson’s books.  What’s your favourite?  Mine is ‘Room on the Broom!’  (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

24/08/2017

Miss Hunter was very impressed with how many articles we could remember from the UNCRC.  We illustrated some of these today to make our ‘Quilt of Rights’.

23/08/2017

As they were on the ECO Committee last year, Pippa and Layla went to help Mr Kerr pick some apples and plums off of the trees in our orchard this afternoon.  They will be on sale at the end of each day this week.

They are  very yummy!  (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

18/08/2017

Our 2 ECO Committee members are Mollie and Pippa.

Our 2 Rights Respecting Schools Steering Group members are Reuben and Olivia.

(Your representative look very pleased that they were chosen.  Mr Stokes)

We all worked well together on different literacy rotations this morning, revising some things that we learned last year.

Good work, everybody.  Keep it up! (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

17/08/2017

P2/3 are all ready and raring to go at the start of the new session 🙂  We’ve had a great day today and everyone has settled back in really well.

Our P.E days this year will be Monday and Friday. Thanks to those who brought their P.E kit in today!
