Primary 1/2 (17-18)

17/05/18

We have enjoyed a very busy week in P1/2.  On Monday, we were presented with certificates for participating in the run, jump and throw event with Ross (our active schools coach).  We also enjoyed sharing our learning with parents/carers at our term 4 open afternoon and demonstrated some of the structured activities we have been completing for our space topic.

On Tuesday, we enjoyed our second themed day of the term which focused on developing our skills in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics).  We made lava ‘space lamps’ and learned about different states of matter.  We then learned about chemical reactions and how the states of matter can change if different ingredients are combined or if we do different things to them.

09/05/18

P1/2 have been learning to say the colour names in French.  They had to use their new vocabulary to paint a rainbow or ‘Arc en Ciel’ for their French speaking bear ‘Camenbear’ .

We really enjoyed the first themed day of the term!

Well done!  (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

p1 have been learning about hygiene and keeping healthy.  They conducted an experiment with bread to explore how quickly germs can spread under different conditions.  After 4 weeks, the result was gruesome!  it has taught us how important it is to wash our hands regularly. The bread we touched with our clean hands did not change at all! The bread we touched with unwashed hands had lots of bacteria AND the bread we dropped outside… well… it was DISGUSTING!

This is horrible!  (from Mrs O’Driscoll)

01/02/18

This week we have been learning how to keep ourselves healthy.  In gym, we have been balancing and jumping on different  apparatus.

P1 have been learning all about germs and how easily they can spread if we don’t wash our hands.  They conducted an experiment, using bread, to test this idea.  The bread was dropped on the ground and then touched with both unwashed and clean hands and put into bags on the wall.  We will be checking to see how quickly the germs appear on the bread over the next few days.  Keep checking our page regularly for a progress update!

P2 have been working with Miss Hunter and have been learning about the human body.  They played fun games to name the body parts and hand to label a diagram with the correct words.

25/01/2018

A toast to Rabbie Burns on his birthday.  P1/2 enjoyed learning about the life of Robert Burns and celebrated his birthday by drinking irn bru, eating shortbread and listening to songs and poems.

22/01/18

P1/2 have worked really hard over the last 2 weeks to learn their Scottish poem ‘Mince and Tatties’ by J. K. Annand.  We have had our class competition this morning where Miss Hunter chose our 3 lucky winners:

Skylah Phillips

Harry MacDonald

Hollie Breen

Well done to everyone, but a special well done to these pupils who will go to Mrs O’Driscoll and Mrs Hastings tomorrow afternoon and they will pick one of the children to recite the poem at our Scottish Celebration on Wednesday afternoon.

Very well done to all of you.  You were amazing!  (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

13/12/17

We had a fantastic morning watching “Cinderella” at the Gaiety!  The children really enjoyed themselves and were a credit to the school and their families, demonstrating  excellent behaviour throughout the entire trip!  Well done, P1 and P2!!!

Hollie Breen got an extra special surprise when she was picked to join Buttons on the stage and help him with his singing.  🙂  Thank you to our parent helpers who joined us today.

12/12/17

Just a reminder that we are going to see “Cinderella” at the Gaiety tomorrow, we will be leaving school at about 9:15am and will return for 1:30pm.  Children can bring a snack to have during the performance and we will have lunch when we arrive back at school. 🙂

For the past few weeks P1 have been completing activities to learn about addition.  P2 pupils have been working with place value involving two digit numbers.  Here we are completing some active games and activities to learn more about these topics.

We looked wonderful in our Christmas jumpers today and raised over £100 for Cash for Kids.  The whole school also took part in a Christmas fun afternoon with races and team games, organised by our active schools coach, Ross.  Staff also participated (very competitively) with the activities, but the overall team with the most points was DOON!  Well done to all of the teams for taking part.  Our star pupil this week is Charlie McColm and our dojo winner is Kathryn Glass! Well done 🙂 .

Next week we are looking forward to our panto on Wednesday and to our performance of “Bethleben” on Thursday.

Our star pupil this week is Liam Knowles and our dojo winner is Holly Brown!  Well done!

This week we finished our Diwali topic.  Diwali is also known as the “festival of lights” and is an important event in the Hindu calendar.  We enjoyed learning about the different things people do to celebrate Diwali and enjoyed listening to the story of “Rama and Sita”.  We made our own Diya lights to remind us of the story and to decorate our class.  We think they look wonderful, and we got lots of compliments at home time when we invited members of our family in to have a look.

They are wonderful!  Well done.  (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

27/10/17

Our star pupil this week is Hayden Stephen and our dojo point winner is Harry MacDonald!  Well done!

This afternoon, we made apple pops! First we had to melt the chocolate, then we coated the apples with it.  After that we put them in the fridge to set.  Finally, we got to decorate them.  The best part was getting to eat them!!

Those apples look amazing!  (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

Does a jellyfish have a brain?  Ask P1/2, they will be able to tell you all about the brain and the 5 senses!   They also completed lots of activities to learn about patterns today and enjoyed making their own patterns using a variety of equipment.

Wow!  This looks interesting (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

5 senses taste testing in Primary 1/2! I wonder if you can guess the foods we tasted by looking at our facial expressions? 🙂 We had to guess if they were sweet, sour, bitter or salty!  Sweet and salty foods are our favourite.

Was it sour, Skylah? (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

19/09/17

It was lovely to see so many of you at our Open Afternoon last Thursday.  The children really enjoyed sharing their work and showing off their skills.  We look forward to seeing you at the next session (dates can be found on the home page of the blog).

06/09/17

P2 have been going to Miss Hunter on a Wednesday afternoon for health and wellbeing.  They have really enjoyed working within their stage to discuss relationships and the important people in their lives.  This afternoon, they made word clouds on the computer to describe their family and the special people they love.    During this time, P1 children got to meet Camembear (our special French speaking bear).  He is going to visit the class regularly to teach the children French …. but he is very shy and it it took us a long time to convince him to come out his magic bag!  We learned how to say ‘hello’ and ‘Goodbye’ in French and can’t wait for Camembear to visit us again.

Bonjour Primary 1! (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

09/17

In gym, we have been working on movement skills and developing our co-ordination, use of space and working on following rules and instructions.  Here we are enjoying a game of aeroplane tig!

We enjoyed painting the rainbows for our star pupil display.  We are going to put our pictures into the middle of the star and decorate them with glitter.  All of our stars will be put on the classroom door.  The star pupil for the week will have their star moved to the P1/2 and P2/3 ‘shining star’ wall outside our classroom.

P1 learned the ‘m’ sound today.  P2 started learning alternatives for the sounds they already know.  They learned that y can also make the ai sound!

24/08/17

It was too beautiful to stay inside this morning… so… we decided to take our literacy work outside!

We were writing our names and sounds!

Our buddies also came to help us in ICT today.  We had fun playing games to develop our mouse control.

Well done buddies!  (From Mrs O’Driscoll)
