Numeracy Home link – Week 1

Home link challenge 1

Hello everyone, hope you are all well and ready for a wee challenge with your child.  Over the next 4 weeks, I will have small numeracy challenges planned that the children can try, either indoors or outdoors.  This is a great opportunity to spend quality time with your child.

Measuring and comparing.

Can you assist your child in using different sized pans to fill up your sink or basin?

– How many small pans/ large pans did you use?

– Is the basin or sink full?

– What other items could you use to fill up the sink? –  kettle, bottles, jugs

– Could you draw me a picture of the items you used?

I can use the language of capacity – full or empty

I can use non standard items for measuring – hands, feet, blocks, jugs and bottles

I can identify items by size and/or amount – big/small, light/heavy, full/empty from a choice of two.

Numeracy home link Week 3

Hello this is week three of your child’s challenge, I would be really grateful for your participation.

Shapes

.- How many circles can you find in the house?

– How many items can you find that are a circle or have a circle within?

-What other shapes can you find in the house, can you name them?

-What resources can you use to make your own shapes?

-Can you match the shapes in the house?

-Can you name and draw the shapes you have found?

I can match shapes through the use of games such as posting shapes in a shape box, or placing shapes on a shape game.

I can recognise and name a range of 2D shapes including, square, circle, triangle and rectangle.

I can match 2D shapes to their outline

Our new pets have settled in well :)

On Wednesday the children got to meet our newest arrivals, two beautiful Guinea pigs called Poppet and Sandy. Even although their excitement was through the roof, they sat well at the side of their cage to look at them. The children were all learning the rules on how to behave and be responsible around them. We spoke about how to care for them, what they eat and drink and how to keep them healthy and safe. The children know to use quiet voices around them, not to stick their fingers through the cage or to post toys into their cage.
Here’s to a long and happy relationship between the children and our new pets, and lots of new found responsibilities.

Poppet and Sandy, we love you already 🙂

Numeracy Challenge #4

Can you create a robot? A car? A rocket?

You will need scissors, glue and sellotape.

Remember this is all about fun – find out what they know and what they  want to learn about. If you take any pictures, can you please send them to me at rena.dornan@eastayrshire.org.uk.  Thanks.

Hello everyone it’s Rena again. This is Week 3 in our numeracy challenges from home. Let’s hope for some nice weather.

Catrine ECC homelink programme

Following on from our successful 4 week library block, we would like now to introduce a 4 week numeracy block for families to enjoy together.

Carrie will also be continuing to upload our staff videos each week showcasing our Rhyme of the Week and of course our tremendous singing voices 🙂

Thank you in advance to Rena who has prepared our numeracy blogs that will follow below and for the weeks to come.

Good afternoon everyone, my name is Rena and as many of you know, I am the  numeracy champion. Every week for 4 weeks I will pop up a few activities for the children to do at home, either indoors or out and about in your local village.

Above are a few cards you can try out when you are at the park, or in the garden.

Can you make a pattern?
Can you make any shapes with them?
Can you measure to find out the longest and shortest?
Which one is the thickest?
Which one is the thinnest?

A booklet will be given out to each child at the start of the numeracy block. You can chart your child’s progress as well as get them to draw some pictures of the activities they have created. Further numeracy websites and google searches can be found below if you wish to support your child with them.

Numeracy at home

Good afternoon boys and girls, I hope you are all well.  We are adding a mathematical theme to our GLOW blog every second week to help promote numeracy and all it entails, using a range of household and outdoor resources.

Today we have a little challenge – can you all look through the house and see how many circular objects you can find? When you have found what you are looking for you could draw some pictures and send them to me.

Walking outside, you could also look for circular or other shaped objects and let me know by either taking pictures, or drawing them for me.

Monday 8th February 2021

Good morning boys and girls. Today we are going to make handprint number lines. You will need…

Paper, scissors, pens, pencils or paint if you wish.

First of all, we are going to start by drawing around our hands 5 or 10 times depending on how large you want to make your number line, then we can decorate the hands whatever way you wish, pens, crayons or paint.

Next with help from your adult, we can start to carefully cut them out.

Once you have cut out your hands  you can write your numbers in the centre, 0-5  0-10 or even  higher if you want a challenge.

Once complete you can make your own number line.

You can also use your hands to measure items in the house, eg how many hands high is your sibling or mummy? Who has the biggest hands in the house?

If you don’t want to do hands you can make your number line with whatever you want use, eg shapes, trains, teddies, cars, tins from the cupboard.

If you wish to extend it, you could look for the numbers in your number line outside in the community. Can you see them on signs, registrations plates, wheelie bins?

Have fun and only do what you are comfortable with.

  • How many hands have you drawn?
  • How many numbers can you recognise and name?
  • Can you order the numbers correctly?
  • Who helped you with the scissors?

Other curricular areas

Numeracy – matching, ordering, number recognition, language of measurement.

Literacy- listening to and following instruction, number formation, discussing topic with others.

HWB- strengthening fine motor skills through pencil and scissor control, looking for number and shape within the community.

Please send videos and photos to

Wednesday 27th January

Good morning boys and girls, hope you are all healthy, happy and well.

Today we are going to talk about our daily routine and what we do.

Today I got up at 6.45am.  I went for a  shower and then had a cup of coffee.

What do you do first, next and last in your morning routine?

What time do you get up at?

How do you know it’s morning?

What’s the difference between morning and night?

What is your routine for the day, because it might be different to your mum’s, dad’s or other family members?

Is your morning routine the same as your night routine?

What do you do first, next and last in your night time routine?

Can you draw daytime and night time pictures, including some of your day’s routine?

Some curricular areas covered

Communication/Language – discussing your day, listen to and respond to one task at a time, opportunities to talk and listen, drawing, pencil control, expanding on vocabulary.

Numeracy – exploring routine and time sequence, anticipates time based activities, eg snack, lunch, suggest what happens (first, next, last)

HWB – recognising we have differences but are all unique, learning to look after myself independently and who can help me.

Use the clock to further explore number by playing “What’s the time Mr Wolf?” with your family or toys.

Monday 18th January

Good morning boys and girls, I hope you are all well. Today we are going to  attempt a numeracy activity involving measurement.

In the house you could look at your toys and see which are the biggest and smallest. You could also look at a variety of household items such as cups, cutlery etc – what is the longest? the widest? the shortest or the narrowest? You could use a range of resources such as rulers, measuring tapes, hands or even bricks (lego) to measure each item, eg what numbers are on the ruler ? which one did  you stop at? how many bricks did you need ?

Within the family you could draw around each others hands and feet …..

Question 1     Whose is the largest?

Question 2      Whose is the smallest?

Question 3       Whose hand size is the in the middle?

If you’re going out a wee walk with the family, look around, what can you see – tall/short trees, long/short twigs, big/small pebbles etc.

Remember and have fun, draw lots of pictures or take photos and send them to me at

rena.dornan@eastayrshire.org.uk

Curricular areas covered.

Numeracy  –  mathematical language, counting, number recognition and problem solving, measurement

Literacy – mark making, pencil control, asking and answering questions.

HWB – Using your senses to explore the world around you
