Dyslexia Friendly School

Dyslexia Friendly School Pupil Group

We have an ever expanding group of pupils in the Doon Academy DFS Pupil Group. As we currently have 43 members, we sometimes split into a junior group (S1 & S2) and a senior group (S3-S6). We meet every fortnight during Mentor period to work on a range of activities to promote dyslexia awareness around the school. We also aim to improve awareness of other learning differences such as autism and ADHD. The S1 members are also involved in Transition visits to Primary Schools during the Summer term.

It is a busy group that has to work under tight time constraints, so if your child would like to join the team, they’d be very welcome! Just ask them to speak to Mrs Wood or Ryan Bartolo (Senior Student Member).

A Dyslexia Friendly Classroom will:
• Consider student learning styles
• Write homework assignments on the board
• Use different coloured paper / overlays
• Make sure that pupils are seated near the board
• Use different types of media to present lessons
• Use Read & Write Gold
• Use different fonts e.g. Comic Sans, Arial, Verdana
• Display Word Walls / pictures
• Provide a copy of notes
• Provide study guides before the exams
• Consistently apply routines
• Make available Spellchecker
• Have available big print dictionaries / Ace dictionary / Pictures Dictionary
• Magnifying rulers / overlays
