Higher History

The Higher History course consists of three units:

Unit I Britain 1850 – 1951

a. The Growth of Democracy.

b. The Changing Status of Women.

c. The Liberal Reforms 1906-14.

d. The Reforms of the Labour Government 1945-51.

Unit II The Rise of Nationalism in Germany 1815-1939

a. The Growth of Nationalism 1815 – 1860.

b.  Bismarck and Unification.

c. The Weimar Republic and the Rise of the Nazis.

d. The Nazi State.

Unit III The Scottish Wars of Independence 1286-1326

a. The Death of Alexander III and the Great Cause.

b.  The Rule of John Balliol.

c. The Rebellion of William Wallace.

d. The Rise and Triumph of Robert Bruce.

Units I and II will be assessed in Paper 1 of the final exam which requires the students to write two essays in one hour and twenty minutes.  There must be one essay on each unit and Paper 1 is worth a total of 40 marks.

Unit III will be assessed in paper 2 of the final exam and requires students to deal with 5 sources and answer 4 questions worth a total of 30 marks in 1 hour and 25 minutes. 

Students will also have to compile an Extended Essay.  This involves choosing a question from any of the units they have studied.  They will be given help in planning and researching their chosen question and they will then write it up under exam conditions in a 2 hour period.  This essay is worth 30 marks.
