Higher Physics

This course contains 3 units:

  • Our Dynamic Universe
  • Particles and Waves
  • Electricity

Each unit will be assessed continually in class, through the use of past paper based homework and an A-D level class test and SQA assessment.

The Higher Physics Course develops learners’ curiosity, interest and enthusiasm for physics in a range of contexts. The skills of scientific inquiry and investigation are developed throughout the Course, and the relevance of physics is highlighted by the study of the applications of physics in everyday contexts.

The elements of the Course are Knowledge and Understanding and Analytical Thinking Skills.

Higher Physics extends and deepens understanding of how our world behaves and why. Mechanics explores projectile motion under gravity, momentum conservation for docking space vehicles, and how gases behave. Electrical topics range from deflection of electron beams in vacuum tubes to electronic circuits for monitoring premature babies’ temperatures. At sub-microscopic level we investigate the structure of the atom, nuclear fission, lasers, radiation, safety and the dual wave and particle nature of light itself.

Students are challenged to aquire knowledge in depth, think logically and develop problem-solving strategies. Formal reporting on experiments requires competent expression in two “languages”, English and Mathematics.
