Outdoor Learning

John Muir Award

“We work to defend wild land, enhance habitats and encourage people of all ages and backgrounds to connect with wild places.”  “The John Muir Award offers an ideal structure for contributing to the requirements of the Curriculum – it is appropriate for later stages of primary and secondary school pupils.  The John Muir Award can be used in a specific subject area such as geography, science, social studies, art, music, English, maths and IT, or across interdisciplinary / cross curricular activity. It can be embedded within strategies and interventions to raise attainment and meet wider areas of learning such as outdoor learning, personal and health education, sustainable development and citizenship.  The John Muir Award can give focus and structure to a residential course, field trip, or excursions to local areas.”

OPAL (Open Air Laboratories)

“The Open Air Laboratories (OPAL) network is a UK-wide citizen science initiative that allows you to get hands-on with nature, whatever your age, background or level of ability.  We develop activities and resources, including our national surveys, which allow you to get closer to your local environment while collecting important scientific data. We also arrange and take part in nature events and workshops around the country.”  Visit their website here.

Outdoor Skills

This book was written by Tom Henry of the Council’s Ranger team and contains a wealth of ideas and basic skills related to Outdoor Learning.  Ideally staff using this resource should have attended an Outdoor Learning training INSET.
