New Primaries, New Faces, New Fun Adventures!

This afternoon the whole school went a little stroll down to the beach for a bit of fun in the sun to celebrate the three days we have spent in our new primaries. While our P7s went off to get a taster of what life will be like after the summer holidays we were joined by 4 new primary 1s fresh out of the nursery to give them some time getting to know their new classroom and friends before the summer holidays! 🎒 🏫 📚 💛
The boys and girls showed off their fabulous teamwork skills to create a piece of artwork using materials found at the beach, some made a sea turtle, a house and garden, a farm and a village using their creativity and imaginations. It was a very difficult task but after much deliberation Phoebe, Rebecca, Vladislav, Ian and Parker’s art was chosen as the winner. 🏆
We ended the day with some stone-skimming, sandcastle building and shell collecting fun before we traipsed back up to school – our pockets filled with stones and our shoes filled with sand! ☀️ 🏖 😎

I think after the jam-packed three days we have had there will be plenty of sleepy heads tonight.. 💤 😴

THE RESULTS ARE IN..

Mrs MacPherson, Miss Gordon and Miss McAuley had the very difficult job identifying 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each of our sports day races, and believe me some of the races were so close it was like splitting hairs! 🥇🏃‍♂️ Children ended the day covered in stickers but most importantly wearing a smile on their little faces!

Primary 1 welcome book

We are very much looking forward to having our new Primary 1 pupils starting in school . 

And, thanks to the digital skills of Mrs Mc Harg and the House captains we have an amazing  electronic book that will help explain more about Kirkcolm Primary.  It is just so good we had to share it with all of our parents.

Ready, Set, GO!

After being rained off last week sports day place this afternoon and was filled with sunshine, good vibes and plenty of great sportsmanship! The boys and girls took part in the usual races and cheered on their classmates and houses 🏁 ⏱ 🏃‍♂️
The competition was fierce this afternoon as the boys and girls took part in..

Results are currently being collated by the lovely Ms Gordon and will be posted shortly! 🥇 The winning house will be announced next week at our end of year closing ceremony! 🏆
A huge thank you to the Young Farmers for lending us their humongous rope which helped Loch Connell win the Tug ‘O’ War competition and another big thank you to our very own Parent Council for very kindly buying every child an ice lolly to enjoy after their fabulous efforts this afternoon – although they certainly were not needed to help cool down from the roasting hot temperatures they were well and truly enjoyed and deserved as a wee sweet treat 🍧

Digital Skills Scotland award

After taking part in a verification assessment yesterday, we are delighted to announce we have been awarded the new Digital Schools Scotland Accreditation.

Portpatrick, Kirkcolm and Leswalt are the first schools in Dumfries and Galloway to achieve this recognition for our ongoing commitment to digital technology learning and teaching.

Forever in Burgundy

The parent council have very kindly bought our P7 leavers a new personalised hoodie, complete with their names on the back in our signature burgundy colour! The boys and girls have been given their cosy hoodies early so they can see out their last few weeks of primary school wearing them before switching the burgundy for black blazers when they move up to Stranraer Academy after the holidays! 🎁
Thank you again to our Parent Council for this lovely send-off gift – a wee memento of Kirkcolm Primary school that they’ll be able to keep forever ❤️

Look out for Litter… Posters

This morning we had a lovely visit from two of the community wardens who came to share some really exciting news! A few months back now the boys and girls were tasked with the job of creating posters for our local community by Andrew Hay. Today we got to see some of posters which had been professionally made, complete with cable ties to display in our lovely, wee village to help to keep it that way and litter free! 🚮 🚯

We were taken out into the playground and shown some of the lucky ones’ posters and then together we tied up the first of many right outside the school. The two wardens suggested we give out some extra homework (don’t worry its fun) to get our steps in and see who can find all of the posters in the community.. no prizes for finding Paige’s one though!! 📌 🚶‍♀️

Well done to all of the boys and girls of Kirkcolm Primary for being responsible citizens and effective contributors to our wee village and a huge thank you to Andrew Hay and the community wardens for bringing our fabulous deigns to life and displaying them for the world (or at least Kirkcolm’s visitors) to see!🌎

Operation Safety

Our Primary 6 pupils headed off to Stair Park today to participate in Operation Safety – a whole day session involving different workshops provided by various agencies, including the emergency services.

Pupils had inputs from –

  • Police Scotland, learning about drug and alcohol awareness and vandalism
  • Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, learning about home safety
  • Youth Work on internet safety
  • Coastguard on water safety
  • Scottish Ambulance Service on First Aid
  • Community Safety Team, learning about anti-social behaviour
  • and SP Energy Networks, learning about electrical safety

They learned a range of life skills to help keep them safe and healthy and had a brilliant time! Thank-you to everyone who helped to organise this very worthwhile day!

New Minister Marlene

A huge welcome to the lovely Marlene Cash who will be both Kirkcolm and Leswalt’s minister! She popped in this afternoon to meet all of the boys and girls and explain her job.
She told a very interesting story which taught the lesson of not judging a book by its cover. She pointed out that the term “silly goose” is actually incorrect! Geese fly in a V shape to be more aerodynamic as well as supporting each other in the air when they’re tired – so it’s actually good to be a goose 🙂 #BeMoreGoose
Cannot wait to get to know our new minister and have her join in on all the fun we get up to!

Logan Botanic Gardens

After the luck we had with the weather for our Mini Walk last week, we didn’t expect to be as fortunate this week for our trip to Logan Gardens but thankfully we were so, very wrong!! 🌞 We hopped on the bus just after 9am with our sun, hats, sunglasses, t-shirts and shorts arriving at the beautiful Logan Gardens with the sun shining in the sky! 😎
We ate our snacks in the walled garden and shortly after were met by the two rangers. Primary 1-4 were bursting with excitement to find out what the mysterious title “The Secrets of Trees” entailed. Before the boys and girls could get anywhere near the trees to ask them ourselves we took a short jaunt through the gardens where we stopped to find out about the inner workings of these amazing plants. We created a human representation of a tree, complete with its trunk, roots, xylem, phloem and bark – finding out about all of the important jobs they do! We learned about how trees get food from sunlight and how trees can create food. It was only right that we tasted some of the tree sap.. please do not be alarmed there was no licking that occurred.. instead we tasted some Maple syrup from a bottle (a cleaner and tastier alterative I think).🌲🍁😂
We then walked around using our senses to describe the roots and bark of trees which have originated all around the world – we were very impressed by the bag and shoes made completely out of tree bark. Unfortunately, Mrs MacPherson was very disappointed to hear these were not for sale in the gift shop! 👜
We then carried on our journey after looking at the bottom of the tree and the middle to look at the leaves of the tree. Using a mirror we looked up at the different shapes and variations of leaves in the sky before finding our own special leaves and discussed what made them unique.🍃🚶‍♀️
We finished off our workshop by using natural materials from the gardens to create a picture (complete with a frame) to represent the different parts of the tree – this was a lot of fun! 
P5-7 were also busy on their “mapping our World” – we started by talking about the purpose of maps and the different kinds that we use in our lives.  We created our own compasses using natural materials as well as a small-scale map of our surroundings – these looked very cool! 🗺 📌
After that we made a sound map; the boys and girls closed their eyes and using only their sense of hearing, mapped out themselves and the sounds they could hear in relation to where they were on their own little maps. Things they heard included: birds singing, leaves rustling, branches moving, the wind whistling..  and randomly the sound of African drumming (which did make for some peaceful listening when we retuned briefly to the walled garden for our lunch)! 👂
A huge thank you to the team from Logan Gardens for making our visit as fun and enjoyable as it was 🙂
