Meta-skills and Sheuchan’s Meta-Verse

At Sheuchan Primary, we want our children to develop the skills they need to learn, grow and thrive, both in school and beyond.

Meta-skills are skills that help children become confident and adaptable learners. They are grouped into three main areas:

Self-management – including focusing, adapting, initiative and integrity.

Social intelligence – including communicating, collaborating, leading and understanding the feelings of others.

Innovation – including curiosity, creativity, sense-making and critical thinking.

Bringing meta-skills to life

At Sheuchan, we have created our own Meta-Verse to make these skills accessible, engaging and memorable for our children.

Characters including Concentralien, Have a Go Go, Inspector Inc., Co-Co Co-operate, Curious Q, Reflect-O and Captain Resilient help children explore what different skills look and feel like in their everyday learning.

You will see our Meta-Verse characters around the school and hear them referred to in learning. They give children a shared language to help them recognise the skills they are developing, reflect on their strengths and understand which skills they might need to use next.

Our aim is not simply for children to know the names of these skills, but to become increasingly confident in using and applying them independently across their learning, relationships and everyday life.

At Sheuchan, developing meta-skills is an important part of helping every child to SHINE.
