Take a look at these short reports written by our P7s about their Transition experience last Friday. Sounds like they can’t wait to go!

P.7 at the Academy

On Friday the 17^th the p7s went to the academy. My mum took us and  we were the first school there. There we had some activities: basketball, science and team building.

Basketball:

This was amazing. We worked on shooting and passing and different team games. Someone ran into a wall – oops!

I even got invited to join them to play basketball on a Friday night.

Science:

We had to do lots to try to find out who committed the crime. We needed to do an experiment to drop water and pen and impressions on cups, and finding out what substance was put in the coffee and investigating finger prints.

Break:

We sat with new friends and old friends and had blether with them and had a snack.

Team building:

Team building – well for this we had a big parachute and played cat and mouse, hungry shark and ball games.

I can’t wait to go to the Academy. I’d like to say a big thank you to Mr Dawson and Mr Law for letting us come and arranging lots of different activities. I was a little unsure about the academy but now I can’t wait to go.

P7 Transition Day!

On the 17^th of February 2017, Leswalt p7 pupils travelled in Ms Anderson’s car into the Academy.

We did a range of activities such as basketball, science and team building. My personal favourite was basketball. Dean was our instructor for it. We had a fifteen minute break in between. I saw some of my friends in other schools who were not in my group and we had a good blether. Our p7’s were in group 3 with some people from Belmont, Sheuchan and Rephad. It was really nice to meet new faces and get to chat about yourself and letting them get to know you.

I was really worried for the induction day but I learned once I was there that I did not need to worry at all. I had a really good time. I got to meet some of the teachers that I might get once I go; for example I met Mrs White the science teacher and the head teacher Mr Dawson. They were very nice and friendly with cheery faces to walk in and see. We also met some of the year one pupils. We got to ask them questions as they went through the same thing as us last year. I was really happy that I met new faces and got to see around. Now I know where three classrooms are so I won’t get lost looking for them in the future. I cannot wait to go on our next set of transitions!

P7 day at the Academy

On Friday the 17^th of February the P7s set off to the Academy accompanied by Karen Anderson. We went to the cafeteria and got sorted in to our groups. Then went to basketball with the YMCA. We played a warm up game of tunnel tig and then went to do some shooting in groups of 4s and 5s then we did some passing in a group of 3.Then we had races of over and under left and right.

After that we went to do some science with the head of science Mrs White. There was a video about somebody tampering with coffee there was a note and we had 5 pens. We needed to investigate! We dabbed them each on paper 20 times and then put 5 drops of water and did the same with the sample. It was either A B C D E it was C. We also bit in to a polystyrene cup and coloured this in and examine our teeth to compare dental imprints.

We went back to the cafeteria to have a break then headed to the assembly hall to do some team building. We played cat and mouse, life guards and sharks. We got the chance to ask some questions and the 1^st years answered them. Then we tried on blazers. At the end we had a speech from Mr Dawson. I thought it was a great morning!

P.7 at the Academy!

On Friday the 17^th of February, the P.7s travelled to Stranraer Academy with Jack’s Mum Karen for a transition event. We met lots of new primary sevens that would be in S1 with us. First of all we went to the gym hall for some basketball with the YMCA. We practiced some shooting and played some tunnel tig.

After that we went to one on the social subjects classrooms for science. In science we had to investigate a crime: Somebody had put something in somebody else’s coffee, left a note, and left a half-eaten pear! We had to figure what pen they used, what they’d put in the coffee, whose fingerprints were on the note, and what teeth marks were on the pear by biting a polystyrene cup to see what our teeth looked like.  Once we had figured it all out, we went to the canteen for a break.

After break we all went to the assembly hall and did some team-building exercises with a parachute, then we played some board games. Both of those activities were fun and I really enjoyed them. During the board games we got our blazer sizes taken too.

Just before we left, the deputy head and the head teacher came and talked to us and said they hoped we had enjoyed ourselves.

Thank you to all the staff and helpers that made this possible. I really enjoyed that day and can’t wait to move up!

Ukulele

We have started learning the ukulele with Eilidh and Jessica from Feis Rois. They are teaching us how to play it and its really fun! We know three chords already and quite a lot of songs! We have to listen very carefully to their instructions. We will have more lessons every Monday for the rest of this term, so hopefully we’ll be able to show off our ukulele talents to everyone soon!

P5-7 have started some work on investigating polygons and headed outside to work this morning in the Winter sunshine.

Working in teams, using sticks and following task cards; the pupils explored different 2D shapes together and put their knowledge of angles to good use too.

We will use this information to find out more in class and will hopefully get back outside again soon to do some more fun maths tasks.

Thank you very much to family and friends for coming along to our Scots Showcase Assembly on Friday 27th January. This was a chance for the winners of our recent Scots competition to perform their poems and  show-off  their winning artwork and handwriting. The judging had been done by Rev. and Mrs Cairns on Tuesday – and what a hard job they had!

P1-4 entertained us all with their singing of ‘If it wisnae fir yir wellies!’ and P5-7 performed ‘Weans get tae the schule!’ to the tune of ‘Donald where’s your trousers!’

Everyone had a great time – what a lovely way to end a very busy week!

Yesterday, 25^th January, Leswalt Primary held their Annual Burns Lunch and what a great time we all had! Yummy food, good company and great entertainment made for the perfect celebration of Rabbie Burns!

Our four P7 pupils chaired, organised and led the afternoon’s events. Arden McIntyre took on the role of chairperson – and a very good job she made of this too!

Finlay Scott (P4) started off by saying The Selkirk Grace and then we were pleased to welcome Charlotte, Phoebe and Noah’s daddy (Mr Gaw) to pipe in the haggis. A very proud, tartan-trousered Noah followed his daddy in, carrying the haggis!

We were extremely lucky to secure a very busy Mr Douglas McClure to offer the Immortal Memory. It was an entertaining, and very interesting, account of those matters which Rabbie Burns held dear.

Following this, staff served the children their delicious Burns Lunch, washed down with Irn Bru or water and the meal was rounded off nicely with some homemade shortbread.

Arden then led us through the afternoon’s entertainment of Scots’ poem recitations and P1-4 delighted us with their rendition of ‘It if wisnae fir yir Wellies!”, followed by P5-7 performing their own version of ‘Donald, Where’s your trousers’ but with their own lyrics to suit!

Jamie Drennan offered his Toast to the Lassies and was ably met by Emily Cochran with her Reply. Jack Rickard gave some humorous and touching anecdotes about Leswalt Primary in his Toast tae the School.

A great afternoon was rounded off by Kayleigh Williams (P6) leading us all in thanking everyone for their contributions to our celebration. Then we all joined hands to sing Auld Lang Syne with Mr McClure’s piano accompaniment. Weel done to yis a’

 

 

On Tuesday the 17th of January we enjoyed playing some rugby. Our coaches were Campbell McGregor (Malcolm’s dad) and Gregor Henry.

They taught us about passing, cooperation, focus and tackling. The tackling was really fun and we TRIED not to make the other person go down with a thump! Passing is about good communication and focusing mostly – it is very important for team games. We split up into to team of Girls vs Boys and we had a little game! Rugby was amazing fun and we all loved it and  can’t wait until next week. We are very lucky  to be getting 4 weeks of coaching.

On Monday 16th January, Mrs Ferguson took Jack Rickard and Jamie Drennan to the annual Rotary Club Young Person’s Lunch. This was held at the North West Castle Hotel. We were made to feel most welcome and enjoyed a delicious three course meal while enjoying the chat of Rotary Club members and pupils from other schools.

The speaker after the lunch was Kate Thomson. She recently retired from the Police after 31 years. Hailing originally from Dumfries, she has worked throughout Dumfries and Galloway and has experienced many varied jobs within different departments of the Police Force. Before she retired, she held the position of ACC for Police Scotland and she was recently awarded the Queen’s Police Medal in the New Year’s Honours List.

She was extremely interesting and we enjoyed listening to her. Jack and Jamie have just sent their letter of thanks to the Rotary Club Chairman for a very interesting and much appreciated lunch.

 

A huge thank you to Mr Brawls who made a set of goals for our keen football players! Having listened to many tales of woe about the shop-bought ones we had which kept breaking, and which he had fixed many times, he decided to sort things out once and for all! He did this in his own time too. We are extremely lucky to have him  and this reminded us all just how invaluable he is to us! Thank you Mr Brawls – what would we do without you?

Happy New Year!

P5-7, joined by Mrs Ferguson, enjoyed celebrating the first day back with each other by singing Auld Lang Syne and raising a toast to the New Year with water or flavoured fizzy juice. We chatted about New Year’s resolutions and how New Year is celebrated in different countries around the world.

Wow what a show! The pupils of Leswalt Primary delighted their afternoon and evening performances on Tuesday 20^th December with their production of ‘Santa’s on Strike!’

The super cast told the story of a disheartened Santa Claus who, having watched too many episodes of Supernanny, is convinced that the children of today are not deserving of Christmas presents. His band of cheery elves, Mrs Claus, the cutest Nativity scene and the Starr, Wiseman, Shepherd and King families, are eventually able to persuade him otherwise. Just in time to get a disgruntled Rudolph harnessed up and prepared to lead the sleigh on Christmas Eve – phew!

The boys and girls worked so hard to bring this all together and what a fabulous job they did! Wonderful singing, acting and lots of laughs and ‘aww’ moments made this a show to remember! Check out our photo gallery. The DVD is also on sale in school – I promise you – it’s a show worth watching and re-watching!
