Today we had a class trip to Newbie Beach. The weather was fair and although the sun was hiding behind the clouds the effects could still be felt at the end of the day. Thank you to Nic Coomby from the Solway Firth Partnership team for assisting us in our beach clean up operation. We filled 12 bin bags full of all sorts of plastic, although mainly coffee cups and water bottles. Such a shame to see so much pollution. We did our good deed for the day and then after lunch half the group enjoyed making a kite, although the wind was surprisingly light. Whilst this was happening the other half of the group were producing news reports on the events of the day and the effects of pollution.
Potted Sports
Primary 5/6 concluded their Health Week by overseeing a Potted Sports event for the rest of the school. Here are a few photos of the other classes enjoying the events.

This week on Monday we were delighted to have some children form nursery join us in class for a short singing session. We thought about learning percentages and decimals but decided singing some of our favourite nursery rhymes was probably the better option.
Before the visit we discussed what makes a good buddy and how this session would help them. The nursery children got to know our faces. It helped them learn the layout of the school. Nursery rhymes helped develop their language and communication skills, especially when we used actions and good facial expressions. It developed their social skills and also helped them understand about different sounds, which helps them with their literacy skills.
It was important that we helped by doing the following.
- Be confident
- Sing songs slowly and clearly
- Use big, clear actions
- Involve the children
- Show best behaviour

The class paid a visit to Annan Library on Friday morning. We enjoyed our visit and had a great chance to see around the new library. Whilst one or two pupils had visited since it’s opening late last year, most of the class had not ventured in yet. I hope that this visit was the first of many for our pupils. Anne showed us around and explained the 4-4-2 voucher scheme. I know a few of the children are keen to see Annan Athletic as soon as possible. Get reading folks!!!

We are now back into full flow and looking forward to an exciting term. Thank you for taking the time to read this update and I hope that you are all well.
Your child should have brought home their Homework pack with reading book, diary and jotter home. The majority of homework will be handed out on a Monday and be due for completion by the Friday of that week. Hopefully all the information you need will be included in the homework pack, and your children are quite clear as to the expectations.
Please can you ensure your child has his/her homework pack every day, as well as a water bottle to keep them well hydrated! In addition to this most children take responsibility for their belongings, but please write your child’s name on clothing labels to avoid items getting lost.
Our P.E. sessions will be on Tuesday and Thursday as well as the Daily Mile on a regular basis. Your child should bring their PE kit to school at the start of the week in a bag which can be hung on their peg. In P.E this term we are working on fitness skills. Mrs Foster will work with the children on a Tuesday and Mr Palmer will lead P.E. on a Thursday.
I will continue to teach the class for the majority of the week. We welcome Mr McCall to school this term and he will be with the class on a Wednesday morning up until break with a focus on Literacy. Mr Palmer will be working in class on Thursday morning focussing on Numeracy.
School dinners are available for £1.80 or £9.00 for the full week.
Our focus for Numeracy and Maths this term will be on Multiplication, 24 hour time and time durations and fractions, percentages and decimals. All of which are my favourites. The children are experiencing Mastery of Maths daily and we hope this helps their mental agility.
Interdisciplinary learning this term will focus initially on Scotland, Scottish Poetry and Robert Burns. All pupils have been given a couple of poems home to learn as part of this. This will be running alongside our country study this year of South Africa. The children will expand their geographical awareness as well as comparing our local area with another area outside Britain.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Welcome back everyone. Term 2 saw our class take on two massive performances. As well as our Christmas Musical Bethlehem, the children also performed the Toot/Dude/Flute to a packed audience. Here we performed Jingle Bells and a selection of other melodies. Well done everyone. You should be very proud. Here are a selection of photos.

Please let me start this post by saying how grateful my wife and I are for all of the well wishing, presents and cards we have received on the birth of our daughter Esme. Thank you very, very much. She made a wee visit to class last week and she slept for the whole visit. The boys and girls think she must sleep all the time, but I can assure you she can be very noisy at times. 🙂
There will be no spelling or maths homework for the rest of term in the lead up to Christmas. Reading Homework will still be issued and the children are reminded to read for about 15 minutes minimum Monday to Thursday night. Pupils also have been learning the song lyrics and words for our Christmas concert, which we hope to see as many of you for as possible. The show is coming together well.
In addition to the Christmas show, our class also have a performance of the TOOT/DUDE learning that has been taking place since early September. We hope you are able to join us on school for that on the 15th December.

This morning we learnt about idioms.
Idioms are sayings. Here’s an example, “I’ve got butterflies in my tummy”. It doesn’t really mean you’ve got butterflies swimming in your tummy, but it does mean that you feel worried , scared or excited. By Amy.
Some other class favourites are:
- He’s driving me up the wall. Lee.
- My stomach is in knots. Oliwia.
- The pot calling the kettle black. Danny.
- Once in a blue moon. Suzie.
- Fat chance. Finlay.
- Get your skates on. Jessica.
- Your head is in the clouds. Courtney.
NO PENS DAY
No Pens Day encourages schools and settings to put down their pens and to run a day of speaking and listening activities. Primary 5/6 wanted to make as much of this day as we could. We would like to share our experiences with some photos of us as we develop our communication skills further. The event involved some articulation games, numbers with a difference and measuring how high we could make a tower using only balloons. I think the children had some great experiences and hope they remember some of the activities for a long time to come.
BIG Numbers
We had to shape our bodies into numbers. The difficulty was knowing how it looked all together. We had to communicate with each other to make the number appear clear.
Balloon Building
How high can you make a tower of balloons? This was the challenge that the class faced today. What strategy could we use? Whose idea should we listen to? Is everyone involved? Were your ideas listened to?
Articulate and Using Our Imaginations
Some of the talking and listening activities encouraged us to use our imaginations. we enjoyed sharing our thoughts with partners and with the whole rest of the class.
Term 1 Update
We would like to share some of the learning and experiences that have been taking place in school this term. Thank you for taking the time to view our class page.
Our topic this term has been on The Victorians. We have enjoyed learning about the harsh reality faced by many Victorian children, working in the factories or coalmines and the early morning starts. We would like to share some of our learning on working in the coalmines. Please see our art and written work on the subject below.
Here is what the finished work looked like.
We wrote a diary extract from the point of view of a young worker having to go out to the dangerous coalmines every day. Some of us also read our work to the rest of the class.
Before the summer holidays we each completed a “Jigsaw” piece of work. It shows that, whilst we all have different interests, personalities and features, we can be successful as a team if we work together and most importantly, respect one another.
P5/6 Class Newsletter
P5.6 Newsletter 2017 Term 1
Term 1 Welcome
A warm welcome to all the boys and girls in Primary 5/6. I have been hearing lots of fun and exciting stories of the children’s summer holidays and it sounds like we all had a good, refreshing break. It is now time to settle back into school life and we have made a super start in the first few days.
A class newsletter should be coming available soon and I hope it provides you with all the information you need at the start of a new year.
