An expert pumpkin carver, in the form of Jade’s Mummy, came in to the Sunshine Room this week to show us her skills. She had already brought two pumpkins for our display but it was great for the children to help her and give her their ideas for a design. As you can see, they were a super help scooping out the seeds and they set her the task of carving a spider in the pumpkin. We think that she did a brilliant job so thank you very much to Jade’s Mummy.

Bring Your Parent To Nursery
All the children love it when a parent or grandparent comes to join in a Nursery session and it’s great that several parents have come in to play in the last week or so. There are still a few weeks left to take the chance to see what the children do in their time in Nursery and everyone is very welcome to stay and play any day. As you can see, it will probably put a huge smile on your child’s face and you will doubtless have great fun too.
Playgroup Visitors
Thank you to the children from Ace playgroup who came to visit us today as part of their transition to Nursery. It was lovely to meet you all and we are looking forward to you coming to us next year. There was a surprise for some of our children when a little brother unexpectedly appeared for a visit but they looked after him very well, showing him round all the different areas of Nursery. Thank you to the staff from Ace for bringing everyone over. We look forward to meeting the rest of the children soon.
Coin Rubbing
The Financial Education Officer who visited us recently has been visiting our blog:
“I was really impressed with the childrens coin rubbings when I visited. I hope everyone at home enjoyed looking at them! Well done to all the Nursery children! Bev :-)”
Thanks again for your visit Bev and for commenting on our blog. We look forward to seeing you again next year.
Money Matters
Recently the afternoon children had a visit from the Financial Education Officer to talk about what we do with money and to help them in their work on coin recognition. They loved the story just as much as the morning children had earlier this year and took part enthusiastically in all the actions. Bev’s huge purse held the children’s interest and they enjoyed the magic of coin rubbing which led to further discussion of what each coin was worth. We would like to thank Bev for her visit and look forward to seeing her again next year.
Special Visitor
Children who will soon move on to Primary 1 at Elmvale Primary enjoyed a lovely visit yesterday from Mrs. Corrie who will be their teacher next year. It was a great opportunity for them to chat to her and show her their “special books”. Mrs. Corrie enjoyed getting to meet the children and, judging by the big smiles on their faces, they were excited to meet her. Thank you Mrs. Corrie for visiting us – it was lovely to see you.
What Happens In A Bakery?
It has been great to have several family members come in to talk to the children about their jobs and our most recent visitor was a Mum who works in a local baker’s. As a member of a family business that has been operating for more than a lifetime in Annan, she was able to explain to the children how all those wonderful cakes, bread and pies reach the shelves.
As a selection of slides appeared on the Promethean board showing the bakery, the children were surprised to see Stan the Star everywhere – he’d obviously thoroughly enjoyed his visit out of Nursery and had been very busy in the bakery. He helped the children to understand the size of the equipment as he looked tiny compared to all the machinery.
We saw the uniform that’s worn by the bakers and the huge flour bag that plays a part in making all the lovely cakes and bread. We learned about the magic ingredient called yeast – some liked the smell and others were not so keen – and how it is used in the baking process. Feeling the dough and seeing the different loaves that it makes certainly brought home to the children the process of making bread.
To top it all, we were presented with a fantastic cake that some of the staff had won in a recent charity fundraising event at the baker’s. We all loved our “Little Minions of Hecklegirth Nursery” cake and can all vouch for its delicious flavour. Thank you for a very interesting visit which certainly captured the children’s attention.
What Does A Nurse Do?
Continuing with our learning about the different jobs we can do in our community, Jayden’s Mum came in to talk to the children about her role as a nurse. They were interested to find out about the various types of equipment she might use and had a close look at things like a thermometer and blood pressure machine. She talked about where she worked and what she has to do as part of her job, giving the children an insight into the world of work.
We really appreciate Jayden’s Mum helping us to teach the children about the world of work. They always love a visitor and it’s even more exciting if it’s a parent. Remember we would love it if more parents or grandparents came in to talk to the children – just have a word with any member of staff and we would be delighted to arrange a suitable time.
The Paramedic Papa
An exciting visitor came to talk to us about his job this week. Armana’s Papa not only showed us the equipment he uses as a paramedic but he was able to let the children see inside an ambulance. They learned what happens when you go to hospital and what a paramedic uses the different equipment for. The children showed particular interest in everything inside the ambulance and enjoyed trying out the bed – a bed with seatbelts not something most had seen before. Of course no visit by an ambulance is complete without seeing the flashing blue lights and hearing the siren. As you can see from the photos, the siren made an impressive noise as the children covered their ears when it came on.
We would all like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to Armana’s Papa for spending so much time in Nursery helping the children to learn about his job. We think a few are now having a change of mind over their future careers.
Polly The Lamb Visits Nursery
The Rainbow Room voted recently to have a vet’s surgery in their role play area and it has seen lots of imaginative play in the past week. There was great excitement on Friday afternoon when, instead of our fluffy dogs, cats and hamsters, a real lamb visited us in Nursery.
Simon and his family have been looking after little Polly the lamb at home and his Mum kindly brought her in to see us. Although just six days old, Polly was not shy and seemed to enjoy all the attention in the Nursery garden. Everyone was able to stroke her and some even fed her from her bottle which was very exciting. Thank you to Simon’s Mum and Polly the lamb from all the afternoon boys and girls.
