World Book Day is a great opportunity to celebrate our favourite books and to encourage the children to enjoy stories. This year, as part of a whole school celebration, the children were encouraged to to bring in their favourite books and some also decided to dress up which was lovely.
We were very lucky to have Primary 6 in Nursery as super visiting storytellers which produced a lovely reading afternoon for all. Thank you to all our families for participating in World Book Day. Staff and Primary 6 enjoyed sharing the stories from home.

Bagpipe Visit
No celebration of Burns Day is complete without the sound of the bagpipes so we were delighted when two of our senior pupils visited Nursery for a performance. Thank you very much to both these pupils for helping the children to have first hand experience of what bagpipes sound like.
Musical Visitors
Some of our children enjoyed a performance on Friday by a harpist and a saxophonist in the school hall. This was a wonderful opportunity for them to hear a performance by very talented musicians and we would like to thank Oliver and Hugh for this fantastic experience. Your performance had a genuine impact on our children.
STEM Visitors
The Rainbow Room children were recently lucky to enjoy the fun science activities that those in the Raindrop Room had experienced. Miss Ash, a Science teacher at Annan Academy, brought her STEM Ambassadors to support our children to engage in a range of experiments. It was unfortunate that so many missed this opportunity, due to illness, but those who participated had a fun learning experience and were encouraged to understand that they too can be scientists.
We would like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to Miss Ash and her STEM Ambassadors for their time and patience. We hope that we can continue to enjoy shared experiences in the future to inspire our children to see science a possible future career.
Christmas Visitors
There have been some strange happenings in our Nursery over the past week or so. One day we came in and the children found fairy dust in several places and a note had been left by one of Santa’s fairies. We all wondered how the fairy had got in to Nursery and some thought that perhaps Santa was sending her to check up on everyone’s behaviour.
On Friday we were all very surprised to find photos of Santa that had not been there the previous day. Once we looked carefully at the photos we realised that Santa himself had been for a visit to our Nursery. This caused great excitement as we realised that he had been looking in our trays and checking out our displays. The conclusion reached was that this must be “the real Santa” and that he must be keeping a check on everything. We all wonder just what he might do next?
STEM Ambassadors
Miss Ash, a Science teacher at Annan Academy, recently brought Senior and Junior STEM Ambassadors to engage our children in a range of fun activities. This opportunity allowed our pupils to access different people from the community and to see for themselves that both boys and girls can become scientists. Some of the secondary pupils had been in our Nursery themselves as pupils so it was helpful to build an understanding that this can be an aspiration for them all in the future.
As you can see, everyone loved participating in all the experiments so we would like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to Miss Ash and all her STEM Ambassadors for their time and patience. We are looking forward to your return visit soon when you will be visiting the Rainbow Room where you will no doubt inspire those children to develop their learning in this area.
Food Sampling
Seth’s family has been looking at the photos of the visit by the Health Improvement Team:
“Seth says trying the food was good he liked the corn”.
Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment. It was great to see the children trying so many foods that day.
Thank You
Those in the Raindrop Room enjoyed taking part in Yvonne and Louise’s information and taster session just as much as those in the Rainbow Room last week. We were delighted that parents, grandparents and childminders were able to join us and everyone appreciated the suggestions and the opportunity to taste different foods.
A few more comments included:
“Very informative, great to see the kids trying different foods. The banana ice-cream was really good. Some very useful tips”.
“Explained all the foods, colours and about textures, very tasty”.
“Good to see the kids try different stuff and some of the stuff was nice”.
“Very informative and useful information and great for the children to try things they maybe wouldn’t try at home”.
Thank you so much to Yvonne and Louise for their time and super advice. Children, staff and our families all thoroughly enjoyed your sessions.
Health Information And Taster Session
Yvonne and Louise from the Health Improvement Team visited us last week for an informal information and taster session. It was lovely to have so many adults from our families joining the children and staff to learn about healthy snack options and it was great to see children and adults alike trying some foods for the first time. Some of the recipes sound delicious and we plan to try them out in Nursery with the children. The healthy banana ice-cream was particularly popular and we think that a few homes in Annan may be trying that idea out soon.
Thank you to the adults for taking the time to give us some feedback on this visit as it helps us evaluate and plan for the future. Comments included:
“Very informative and colourful”
“Very informative session and lovely to spend time with my child encouraging her to eat healthy. We all love the banana ice-cream and the Sharon fruit. Thank you”.
“Very helpful information, well presented”.
Here are some of the children and adults enjoying the session in the Rainbow Room.
Alfie Comes To Visit
Alfie, an assistance dog, and his owner Mrs. Anne Eales came to visit us in Nursery recently to show us just how clever he is. Alfie helps Mrs. Eales with lots of jobs to make her life easier and both children and staff were amazed when they saw what he could do. He helped Mrs. Eales off with her coat by tugging at her sleeves, picked up things she had dropped, took her boot off and can even hand her purse to a shopkeeper.
We thought that Alfie was very clever and both he and Mrs. Eales were so patient with all the children explaining what his job involves. Thank you so much to you both, you must have been very tired by the time you had spoken to everyone. We really appreciated your visit and would like to thank you for your time.
