Sometimes it can be the simplest of activities that are the most effective and this area produced lots of enthusiasm from the children to try something new. As you can see, the children’s focus and concentration was impressive as they developed their fine motor skills by using tongs to select a pompom and place it on the golf tee.
Although most of the children had predicted that the bigger pompoms would be easier to use, they discovered that the smaller ones balanced more easily on the tees and they then preferred to practise with them. Great problem solving and fine motor skills boys and girls!

Young Engineers
To help with counting skills outdoors, some of the children have been busy using the resources they could find in Nursery to make their own counting string. Making holes in the bottle tops was tricky but was a great activity to help develop the children’s fine motor skills as was the threading of them on to string. We think that this little group has shown themselves to be great little engineers and love the counting line that now hangs in the outdoor area for everyone to play with.
Den Building
Outdoor play provides great opportunities for the children to develop their creativity and skills with lots of problem solving and teamwork at the heart of much of their learning. This snapshot from one morning shows the children working well together to create their own den, triggering lots of imaginative play which extended to the mud kitchen as meals had to be provided for the family living in the new den. No wonder the children go home tired with all this hard work that they do in a day.
Learning Through Play
Problem solving and teamwork are important skills that the children will need as they progress and develop throughout their lives, even into the world of work. These children showed both of these skills as they played with the construction tubes, working out how to make a slide for the balls. As you can see, they showed ingenuity and great co-operation which resulted in success, with the children having provided a great learning experience for themselves.
Great Glasses
Sometimes in Nursery an idea can start from one child then others take it on board and join in. Here a group of children decided that they wanted glasses as part of their play so they got busy in the drawing area and, with a little guidance, they made their glasses then spent the rest of the session making good use of them in their play. We think that they look great.
Food Portraits
Our young artists in the Rainbow Room have been looking at the work of the artist Arcimboldo who was famous for creating imaginative portraits made of food amongst other things. The children have shown imagination and creativity to make their own portraits on slate in the style of Arcimboldo and developed their technology skills by taking photos of their work themselves. We loved their artwork and photography so much that we have made a display in the school for everyone to see. Great work children!
Making A Slide
It never ceases to amaze us how inventive our children can be in their play. This little group decided to use the planks from the balancing activity to turn them into a slide. They carefully positioned and repositioned the planks until they found the right position and angle to make it work and here is the end result – a great little slide. Good teamwork boys and girls!
Nursery Pirates
Inspired by the interest of a group of children in the Rainbow Room in pirates, those playing in the outdoor area recently created a pirate ship using the materials they could find in the garden. This produced endless hours of imaginative fun and great teamwork to create their ship. As you can see, discussions around pirates also led some to creating their own parrot which look great.
Mud Painting And Creativity
We would like to share this little gallery of outdoor play in the Rainbow Room one recent morning. Painting with mud was very popular with some, as the children created artwork using the resources available to them.
Another group decided to make their own hotel using cones, pipes, cable reels and other bits and pieces they found outdoors. In case you are wondering, the watering can on the top of their hotel is the sprinkler to put out fires in the hotel. What a great idea! As always, our children prove themselves to be so creative in their use of resources.

Imagination And Creativity
Children’s imagination and creativity never cease to amaze us. These photos captured the play of a little group who decided to make their own fire engine immediately after our recent fire practice. They used materials in the garden to create their own engine complete with wheels and hoses then spent ages playing imaginatively in it. Great work children!
