Bye Bye Butterflies

After great anticipation, all our butterflies finally emerged from their cocoons, much to the delight of the children and some parents who have been following their progress. On Monday we were able to release them in the Nursery garden. After a little hesitation, each one flew off to their new life to the happy cheers and waves of the children and staff.

We hope that these photos capture the moment as it was certainly a very exciting and happy one for everyone.

Our Cocoons Have Been Made

The exciting news at the end of last week was that our caterpillars decided that it was time to make their cocoons. We watched carefully as one by one they made their way to the top of the tub, curled up and formed their own little cocoons. They are now safe and sound in the net, with some juicy pieces of orange waiting for them when they emerge. Hopefully, our beautiful butterflies should arrive soon.

Eleanor’s Special Message

Eleanor has painted a wonderful picture of a beach scene for her Uncle Fernando. She used the Promethean board to paint her picture and wrote a special message for Uncle Fernando which says, “Please read this message”. Eleanor then took a photo of her work so that it could go on the blog for him to see. We hope you like it Uncle Fernando?

Caterpillar “Babies”

No doubt most of you will know about the latest additions to Nursery – our five little caterpillars which arrived in a cardboard box last week. Having recently learned about the life cycle of a caterpillar, the children were very excited to get the opportunity to look after their own.

Everyone was very interested in our new arrivals.

Miss Kerr read the instructions so that we would know how to look after them properly. As Finlay said, “They need perfect conditions”. When we came back to Nursery today, they had already grown so hopefully they are healthy and happy in Nursery.

Lots of the children have already shown their families our new “babies” so everyone is looking forward to seeing how they develop in the next week or two. Please feel free to ask the children to show you them if you want to follow their progress.

Keeping a close eye on our new additions.

Beautiful Butterflies

There have been some beautiful butterflies appearing in Nursery this week as everyone has been having fun decorating them at home with their families. What a lot of fantastic ideas you all have! Some children used glue and collage materials, some painted or used crayons and one even used his feet to paint his butterfly. If you look carefully in our photos you can also see Suzie’s fantastic butterfly that she painted on the Nursery Promethean board.

The children have been keen to talk about their wonderful creations and we have spent time discussing which ones are the same on each side and which are different.

To add to our excitement of learning about butterflies, a very special parcel arrived today in Nursery. We are now the proud owners of five little caterpillars so we may produce some real butterflies of our own in a few weeks. Please ask the children to keep you posted on their progress.

What do you think of our wall?

Now that the children’s ideas have been so fantastically transformed by Rory’s Mum and Dad into a piece of art on our garden wall, we asked them what they thought of it. We hope that you all enjoy their comments. The story of this design from beginning to end is in a book in the story corner for everyone to look at.

Layton: I like the Earth. It’s where we live and it’s got a bit of jig-saw attached.

Grace: I like the princess – she’s going to her castle.

Rohan: I like all of it. That lady’s called a mermaid ‘cause she comes out of the water and looks for a dinosaur and goes back underwater to hide.

Theo: I like the Loch Ness monster.

Neve: I like the princess’ dress.

Hannah A.: I like the planet. I think everyone dances on it.

Lee: I like the puzzle ‘cause it’s got a spider’s web.

Liam: the green lizard’s good.

Emily D.: the rocket flying past the moon.

Haydn: I like the Loch Ness monster that’s in the water.

Finlay: I like the butterfly and Stan the Star and the planet – I think it’s Mars.

Caleb: I like the spider in the web. It’s stuck.

Courtney: I like the princess. I like her dress best.

Lexie: the sunflowers are the best bit.

Healthy and Happy

As part of our “Healthy and Happy Week” we had a visit from the school nurse who talked to us about various aspects of a healthy lifestyle.

We learned about the importance of washing our hands and had great fun using Rachel’s “magic machine” which showed us where the germs were hiding on our hands. We also worked well together on different activities designed to think about which foods are good for us and which should only be an occasional treat.

All in all, this was a super learning event for all the children so thanks to Rachel for taking the time to spend with Nursery, Primary 1 and Primary 2 – we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and learned lots.

Families Learning Together

We are delighted to say that our Family Learning event last week was very well attended. “Healthy Snacks and Happy Faces” seemed to be a great success for everyone who took part and it was lovely to see families able to enjoy some fun learning together, particularly when children were from different classes.

Families from Nursery, Primary 1 and Primary 2/1 all attended our session, enjoying delicious healthy snacks of strawberries, raspberries and blueberries on oatcakes and soft cheese. There was friendly advice available and a selection of helpful leaflets as well as the opportunity to make a happy face using food pictures.

We hope everyone enjoyed this aspect of our “Healthy and Happy Week” and are very grateful to Eileen Johnstone, our Family Learning Co-ordinator, for, yet again, organising an event which made everyone feel welcome.

Learning is Fun

When we returned from our Easter holidays the children were very excited to find that our whiteboard had been adjusted so that it could be lowered to the correct height for them. This means that they can now learn how to use the “magic pen” and everyone is very keen to try it out.

This week we have started doing our daily calendar on the board and the children are learning to use the pen to drag words and pictures to the appropriate place on the calendar.

As you can see from the photos, we have also been using the whiteboard for some of our “All Together Time” activities. This week we were learning about Spring and it added greatly to the children’s interest and involvement in the activity when they were able to see large pictures to add to our discussion and they were able to drag pictures to different areas of the board to classify whether images were of Springtime or Winter. Children and adults alike are delighted with our new resource and we look forward to all the fun learning opportunities it will provide for us in the future.

Ducklings

As promised, Murray’s Mum had more exciting visitors for us after the previous week’s surprise appearance of their lamb. This time it was six gorgeous ducklings that came to say hello one afternoon. They were only a week old but already growing quickly. We had some interesting suggestions of what colour they might be before we saw them but we soon found out that there was a black one and five which looked “browny green” as the children described them. We had a look at the duckling’s webbed feet and learned that they don’t have any teeth but no-one risked their fingers in their beaks, just in case.

Thank you to Murray and his Mum for letting us have a look at their little ducklings. As you can see from the photos, we all thought that they were super visitors.
