Creating Memories Together

We would like to share this lovely gallery from one of our children, showing what she has been doing at home while Nursery is closed. We think that you will be amazed at how busy she has been.

She has been doing a lot of biking…4 miles a day to be precise! She is very fast, in fact can beat her mummy!!!

The family has been keeping busy in the garden, doing crafts, creating a fairy garden, redesigning her play house, planting plants, creating potions, weeding and painting lots of stones from the shore!

They created an Easter window display for a competition at her big sister’s school, it kept them busy for days!

They have been baking and decorating lots of cupcakes then enjoying eating them and sharing them with their elderly neighbours who they have been checking in on! With some help from her big sister she even made her mummy and daddy dinner one night! The family also made ice cream sundaes as a treat!

As always this little girl has been doing lots of role play with her sister! Midwives, teachers, princesses, hair dressers and they even set up a Spa and a Cinema to watch the new Trolls movie!

She loved watching the clip of Mrs Maxwell reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar which is her favourite bedtime story so she created a picture of the ‘fat caterpillar’ for her.

Their next project is growing butterflies and caring for tadpoles! Let’s hope they are as successful as last year!!

What a super time you have been having, creating wonderful memories together. We look forward to hearing about the butterflies and tadpoles once they start growing.
Thank you so much for sending us your photos and lots of news about what you have been doing with your family. We love to hear from everyone. Keep having fun and learning together.

Sing Along With Mrs. Irving

To help you learn our “Rhyme of the Week”, Mrs. Irving has recorded Hickory Dickory Dock for us on her accordion. We hope that you all enjoy singing along with her.

Bird Watching

One of our families has kindly shared these photos to let us know what they have been doing recently while Nursery is closed. Bird watching was the activity of the day for them on Monday. They have a new bird box in their garden and made their own binoculars, to keep an eye out for any visiting birds, followed by a three and a half mile bike ride.
Thank you so much for sharing your photos. It looks like you are having a great time and keeping fit too. Fingers crossed that some little birds start visiting your garden.

We’re Going On A Bear Hunt

One of the children’s favourite stories in Nursery is “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt” and if you click on the link below you can see the author Michael Rosen reading the story which we feel sure the children will thoroughly enjoy. Ask if they can remember the special word for the person who writes a story as we have talked a lot about the term ‘author’ as well as ‘title’ and ‘illustrator.

This is such a brilliant book to read over and over again and Michael Rosen’s voice and facial expressions are brilliant. The repetition helps children to recall the story and retell it themselves. See if they can join in with the story and actions as many of them love to do this in Nursery.

Ask them what they think happened to the bear and how they think he was feeling at the end of the story. Who does he live with or does he live alone? What will he eat for his tea? Maybe they could make a cave for their own teddy bear using an old cereal box or using material, such as towels, under a chair or a table?

Well Done Fern!

Fern’s family has been in touch after seeing Mr. Palmer’s bike art competition:

“This is a fun idea, Fern will love taking part. Fern has used some of her time at home to learn how to ride her bike without stabilisers!!”

Wow! Well done Fern learning to ride without stabilisers. We are all very proud of you and we are looking forward to seeing a photo of your bike art later in the week.

We hope that lots of our families will take part and send their photos to the school address gw08officehecklegirt@ea.dumgal.sch.uk or to Mr. Palmer’s address gw08palmerchris@ea.dumgal.sch.uk by Friday May 1st.

Stay At Home Ideas

The World Book Day website has a “Stay At Home Ideas” section that provides fun ideas, craft activities, and free book resources that families can enjoy together.

It’s a great opportunity to share stories and enjoy the magic of books, including free audiobooks and storybook videos such as a lovely selection from Julia Donaldson’s “Tales From Acorn Wood” series. They hope that you’ll find something to inspire all ages from mini bookworms to older readers and they plan to update their page over the coming weeks with new ideas to keep everyone engaged and busy.

Floating And Sinking

We would like to share an activity to try at home which involves the fun of water play alongside some science learning.

• Collect a selection of toys and other suitable objects which will not be damaged by being put in water. Put some water in a basin, a bucket or a sink.
• Encourage your child initially to make predictions about whether the objects will float or sink then get them to test their theories.
• Discuss where the toys sit in the water – are at the top or the bottom of the basin? Discuss with them why they think the objects floated or sunk.
• Use the terms ‘float’ and sink’ to help the children use the correct vocabulary.
• Fruit like apples and oranges can give surprising results. If you have an orange, try testing it with the peel on then peel it and try it again.
• The children can then sort the objects into a group that floats and a group that sinks. Help them to count how many are in each group and discuss which group has more.

We hope that you can have fun with a little floating and sinking. We would love to hear how you get on with this activity.

How Many Ways Can You Move?

Outdoor play is always very popular with our children and this little group was certainly displaying super gross motor skills as they found different ways to move across the frame. I wonder what you have all been doing outdoors at home in the lovely weather?

How many different ways of moving can you think of? What about climbing like this little group, running, rolling … remember all those different moves you learned in the hall? See how many different ways you can show your family to move and count them together. I wonder which is your favourite movement? We would love to hear how you get on.

Rhyme Of The Week

As we have said previously, singing songs and rhymes together is very important for children’s development so we will continue to share a suggested “Rhyme of the Week” here although the more rhymes the children enjoy, the better.

This week’s rhyme is “Humpty Dumpty”. We hope that you all enjoy singing along to this clip. Simply refresh our page to watch it again.

We think that Humpty Dumpty looks happy with his bandages on. I wonder if you could try to draw him at home? Will you draw him before or after his big fall?
