Continuing with our learning about the different jobs we can do in our community, Jayden’s Mum came in to talk to the children about her role as a nurse. They were interested to find out about the various types of equipment she might use and had a close look at things like a thermometer and blood pressure machine. She talked about where she worked and what she has to do as part of her job, giving the children an insight into the world of work.
We really appreciate Jayden’s Mum helping us to teach the children about the world of work. They always love a visitor and it’s even more exciting if it’s a parent. Remember we would love it if more parents or grandparents came in to talk to the children – just have a word with any member of staff and we would be delighted to arrange a suitable time.

The Paramedic Papa
An exciting visitor came to talk to us about his job this week. Armana’s Papa not only showed us the equipment he uses as a paramedic but he was able to let the children see inside an ambulance. They learned what happens when you go to hospital and what a paramedic uses the different equipment for. The children showed particular interest in everything inside the ambulance and enjoyed trying out the bed – a bed with seatbelts not something most had seen before. Of course no visit by an ambulance is complete without seeing the flashing blue lights and hearing the siren. As you can see from the photos, the siren made an impressive noise as the children covered their ears when it came on.
We would all like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to Armana’s Papa for spending so much time in Nursery helping the children to learn about his job. We think a few are now having a change of mind over their future careers.
Visiting Church
The afternoon children enjoyed the same experience as the morning children on their visit to see Rev. McGougan in his church. As you can see, they explored all the areas of the church and learned a little about Rev. McGougan’s job.
Again we would like to say a huge thank you to all the parents who accompanied us as, without you, it would not be possible to go on visits outside Nursery. We are looking forward to more visits next week to help us find out about our local community.
Talking About Our Learning
Two of our families have commented on our recent learning about our local community.
Sophie’s Mum said, “Sophie seemed really impressed with the Firefighter visit, she’s been telling us important fire safety so she was obviously listening well!”
It was a very good visit for the children. Ian provided ‘hands on’ activities that helped them remember the important points. Well done Sophie for listening well.
Carmen’s Mum also commented: “Carmen said she enjoyed the visit to the church. I asked her what they saw. She said they went into a room it was a secret room mum?! Sounds exciting!!”
I wonder if that might have been the vestry that Carmen was thinking about? Rev. McGougan was very kind, showing the children all the different areas of the church.

Church Visit
Our visits to various places in our community continued this week with a visit to a local church. It was very kind of Rev. McGougan to invite us in to his place of work and he was able to explain to the children what he did in his job apart from visit us in Nursery at special times. They were also able to explore the building, upstairs and down, and learn about what happens there.
We hope that enjoy the photos of the morning children on their visit. Thank you to Rev. McGougan for making us feel so welcome and to all the parents who came with us on our visit. Photos of the visit by the afternoon boys and girls will be posted soon.

Firefighters At The Ready
Ian the firefighter was kind enough to visit the afternoon children as well as those in the morning. He seems to have turned this into a popular career choice as lots of the children liked the idea of being firefighters in the future. We hope that you enjoy the photos of the afternoon children getting into the spirit of things when learning about staying safe in a fire and what a firefighter’s job involves.
Firefighters Of The Future
Ian the firefighter kindly visited Nursery today to talk about his job and about how to stay safe in a fire. As well as discussing the dangers of matches, the children enjoyed some fun games to help them remember to stay low in a fire as they had to crawl under makeshift smoke in the form of a billowing parachute.
There was great discussion about a firefighter’s uniform and why he/she needs it to stay safe. As you can see, some of the children tried out a jacket and helmet for size but none of them managed to put on the uniform in the twenty seconds that Ian has to get his on when he’s going to a fire. We think that quite a few of the children like the idea of being our firefighters of the future. It will be interesting to see if any of them fulfill that wish.
World Book Day
To celebrate World Book Day, the afternoon children paid a visit to Annan library today. They enjoyed Tina’s stories as much as the morning children had and were also keen to share their ideas when we discussed some of the stories. It was super to see that Tina had some dual language books and we enjoyed hearing the Polish words for the different animals when we read “Dear Zoo”. Thank you to the Polish parents who helped us to translate and thank you to all those parents who took the time to come to the library with us. Without your help we would not be able to take the children visits outside school. If any parent would like an application form to allow their child join the library, we have some in Nursery so please just ask.
Pancake Day
We couldn’t let Pancake Day pass without a mention so the children have been finding out a little about what it signifies. The thought of forty days until Easter certainly sparked some interest and discussion as the children realised that this meant forty days until Easter eggs arrived. They did also show some understanding of what pancakes were made of and why we have them.
Watching a pancake race on the Promethean board inspired some to have fun trying out pancake tossing themselves and lots of children told us that they were having pancakes at home tonight so we hope that you all enjoyed Pancake Day.
Library Visit
The morning children paid a visit to our local library today as part of learning about our community and to celebrate World Book Day which is on Thursday. Everyone seemed to enjoy the super stories read by Tina and there was plenty opportunity for the children to discuss their own ideas after each one.
Lots of children seemed to be familiar with the library and hopefully more may join after their visit today. Thank you to all the parents who came along with us. We really appreciate your help. Thank you also to the children for making us very proud of you – your behaviour was excellent on the walk there and inside the library.
