Sunflower Art

Having been inspired by our recent discussions about Vincent Van Gogh, the children have had the opportunity to create their own sunflower artwork which has formed a display in both the school and Nursery corridors. Here is a selection of some of their work – please take the time to have a look at the displays in school as we think the children have produced some great art.

Vincent Van Gogh

We have been learning a little about Vincent Van Gogh and have looked at two of his paintings to talk about which we prefer. Here are some of the children’s thoughts.

Darcy: “The Starry Night” is best. I like the moon.
Jacob: I like the “Sunflowers” – it’s pretty.
Fearne: the “Sunflowers” is nice – they’ve got nice petals.
Caidy: I like the pot on the “Sunflowers” one.
Max A.: I like “The Starry Night”. I like the stars.
Callum: I like the “Sunflowers” ’cause they’re so shiny.
Wareeshah: I like “Sunflowers”. I’ve got it at home.
Brooke: I like “Sunflowers” ’cause it’s like summer.
Aoife: I like “Starry Night” ’cause it’s a bit dark.
Finlay T.: I like the yellow bits on “Starry Night”.
Jade G.: I like the circle bits on “Starry Night”.
Jayden: I like “Starry Night”. I like the stars and the big thing.

Fun In The Sun

The children returned to some lovely weather at the start of this term and most took full advantage of the opportunity to access the outdoor area. As you can see, some enjoyed reading a story or painting as they took a little breather from climbing, digging, den building or any of the more physical outdoor activities. Let’s hope the sun keeps visiting us this term to give everyone a big smile on their faces.

Language Programme

For those parents who have been using our English language programme to develop their child’s communication skills, I have now added books nine and ten to our blog. They can be found if you click on the link on the right that says “Learning English”. Although initially intended for children with English as an Additional Language, this programme could be useful for any children who need a little help and encouragement to develop their language skills. We hope that these new books are useful to support your child’s learning at home.

Church Visit

The visits to various places in our community continued recently with a walk to the United Reform Church. Rev. McGougan kindly invited us to his place of work and he was able to explain to the children what his job involves, apart from visiting us in Nursery at special times. They were also able to explore the building, upstairs and down, and learn about what happens there.
Thank you to Rev. McGougan for making us feel so welcome and to all the parents who came with us on our visit.

Fire Fighting In Nursery

A fire fighter recently visited Nursery to talk about his job and about how to stay safe in a fire. As well as learning about the dangers of matches through a story, the children enjoyed fun games to help them remember to stay low in a fire as they crawled under makeshift smoke in the form of a billowing parachute.
Some children tried out a jacket and helmet for size and had some good ideas about why a fire fighter needs different parts of his/her uniform to stay safe. We think that quite a few of the children like the idea of being our fire fighters of the future and they certainly look the part.

Developing Talking Skills

Last term we added a section to our blog which gave the parents of children with English as an Additional Language the opportunity to work on the EALIP programme which we use in Nursery. This can be seen when you click on “Learning English” under “Support Information” on the right.
Recently one of our families asked for the books based on learning the body parts and clothes so these have now been added. These materials are helpful in supporting children in their learning, as you can use this tool at home and can hear the correct pronunciation in English.
Although initially intended for children with English as an Additional Language, this programme could be useful for any children who need a little help and encouragement to develop their language skills. We hope that these new books are helpful.

Police Station Take Two

The afternoon children showed great enthusiasm on their recent visit to the police station and enjoyed finding out all about a police officer’s job. Just like the morning children, they behaved beautifully and made us very proud of them all. Thank you again to all those parents who helped to make this visit possible.
