How Clean Are Your Hands?

After learning about how to wash their hands properly, the children were able to check how well they had cleaned them by looking at their hands in a special machine that uses UV light to show up germs. As you can imagine, it was quite a surprise to some of them that they still had germs showing up on their hands so hopefully everyone will now be making an extra super effort with their hand washing from now on.

Handwashing Hygiene

As part of our Health and Wellbeing plan, the children have been learning lately about the importance of handwashing and how to do it well to avoid germs. Here are a few of the ideas in the Raindrop Room.

Archie: wash your dirty hands.
Louie: use water then soap, rub together, wash it all away …done.
Jasmin: use water first.
Imogen: after you sneeze you wash your hands.
Alisha: after we’ve been outside we wash our hands.
Finlay: I like having clean hands. They smell nice.

Word Of The Week

We have some interesting words as a focus this week. The Rainbow Room has chosen “semi-circle” as their “Word of the Week” as the children have been showing an interest in naming shapes in their play. The Raindrop Room staff will be focussing on the children learning what a “bug hotel” is. I wonder if you can guess what they have planned for the outdoor area this week?

Big Garden Birdwatch

The Big Garden Birdwatch was a focus for some of the children last week as part of their outdoor play. They used observation skills and discussion to match the birds they saw to those on their chart and used tally marks to help count them. Some children then showed great patience to make bird feeders which they hung around the garden. We hope that you are all looking after the birds at home in this cold weather.

Imagination And Creativity

Outdoor play provides such great opportunities to develop so many skills in many areas of the curriculum and some children simply relish those opportunities every day. As you can see from this recent snapshot of one day in the Rainbow Room outdoor area, they show great imagination and creativity in the range of resources they discover in their play.

Burns Day

On Friday we celebrated Burns Day with shortbread, tattie scones, oatcakes, cheese and, of course, Irn Bru. In true tradition some of the children even had a little taste of haggis, neeps and tatties and tried out some Highland dancing which was great fun. We appreciate our families making a super effort to provide the children with ‘a touch o’ tartan’ – we thought that they looked wonderful.

Winter Is Here

The focus of discussion recently has been about Winter and how it affects our lives. Here are a few ideas from the Raindrop Room.

Fern: frost comes out at night – it’s crunchy.
Leah: the trees are bare.
Jasmin: there’s snow.
Louie: there’s frost on the grass.
Evan: we have to wear a hat and scarf.
Mason: you can blow away.
Charlotte: all the leaves are off the trees.
Archie: it’s cold. You need to wear a suit in the garden. You need gloves.
Imogen: the snow comes and it’s frosty.
Ellie: the ice makes the leaves go to frost.
Remy: the trees go icy.
Skye: we need to wear a hat.
Macaulay: the ice melts when it’s sunny.
Marnie: you need to wear a coat, hat and gloves.

We think that you are developing a good idea of what Winter is like. Great ideas everyone.
