Fire Station

As part of learning about jobs in our community, the children had trips out this week to visit the fire station. They got a close up view of the equipment in a fire engine, as well as the fire officer’s uniform, and put their hands to their ears as the blue lights and siren were turned on. Of course, no visit to the fire station is complete without getting an opportunity to sit up in the fire engine and try out the big hose which was great highlight for everyone.
As well as learning about a firefighter’s job, we had a great team teaching the children about road safety through role play. The children showed themselves to be knowledgeable and certainly followed the rules of road safety on the walk to and from the fire station.
Huge thanks go to all the fire team who looked after us and made our visit such fun as well as to the parents who accompanied us – without parent helpers these trips out would not be possible. Slimy Science

One of our recent experiments in the Raindrop Room was to make slime which, as you can imagine, was a very popular activity. We talked about what an experiment is and that we were investigating what would happen if we mixed certain ingredients. Washing up liquid, cornflour, water and food colouring were our starting point and the children enthusiastically followed the instructions for making slime.
There was lots of learning involved as the children measured the correct amounts, mixed them together then discussed if our experiment was successful. They showed good evaluation skills when they realised that their mixture was too watery and they had to provide suggestions of how we could improve it. In the end, as you can see, a second batch of slime was more successful and the children had a fun learning experience. We hope that you like our slimy photos.
Some of their comments were:
Remy: it wasn’t sticky. We put too much water in it.
Leo: it was getting all fuzzy. It had soap, water, corn stuff and the thing we put in playdough (food colouring).
Leah: it feels slimy. It feels really funny.
Emilia B.: don’t add too much water.
Sofia: we made it sticky.

Signs Of Spring

Some of the children from the Raindrop Room paid a visit to the school nature area recently. Armed with clipboards, pictures and a lot of excitement they headed off to look for signs of Spring. The children were delighted to find the beginnings of Spring in evidence, finding some daffodils and buds on plants, but we think that the weather needs to get a little warmer before we can say it really feels like Spring.

Weather Watch

Weather watching is very popular in both rooms in our Nursery. Wind socks, thermometers and rain gauges are checked on a daily basis and the children’s findings are recorded. The children have used the camera to record evidence on their equipment and have begun to record temperatures on charts, developing independence, taking on responsibilities and developing their numeracy skills.

Imagination And Creativity

Children’s imagination and creativity never cease to amaze us. These photos captured the play of a little group who decided to make their own fire engine immediately after our recent fire practice. They used materials in the garden to create their own engine complete with wheels and hoses then spent ages playing imaginatively in it. Great work children!

Measuring

I wonder if the children use terms of measure at home? These children have been talking about ‘full’ and ’empty’ as they experimented in the water area. Some were able to pour water to make cups ‘full’ or ‘half-full’ and most understood the term ’empty’. They certainly looking like they are concentrating well in these photos.

Tasting Time

There is so much learning happens in the snack area and recently the Rainbow Room used this area to focus on tasting different foods and recording their likes and dislikes on a graph, developing the children’s skills in Numeracy and Mathematics as well as Health and Wellbeing. The children tasted a range of fruit and then vegetables to find out the most popular as they recorded their preferred choices then learned how to understand their recordings.
