Tesco Take Two

Just like the morning children, those in the afternoon thoroughly enjoyed their visit to Tesco last week. Thank you again to all those parents who accompanied us and to Tesco for such an informative visit. We really appreciate the opportunity for the children to learn about their local community and the world of work.

Tesco Visitors

There were some young visitors at Tesco last week as Nursery children visited the store to learn about what happens in the shop and behind the scenes. They worked well on their shopping task in the fruit aisle and had to think hard about finding different numbers of fruit and vegetables in various colours. The walk-in fridge and freezer were a bit chilly for some but we soon warmed up in the bakery and at the delicatessen. The tills were great fun too.
We would like to say huge thanks to all the staff at Tesco who were so patient and kind. The children thoroughly enjoyed their visit and we all appreciate the time you took to show them round the store. Thank you also to those parents who gave the time to make our visit possible. Here are the morning children busy in the store. Photos of the afternoon children will follow soon.

Well Done Brooke

Brooke’s family likes the photos of the children feeding the birds:

“Great photos, Since this, Brooke has been helping feed the birds at home and at her Grannies house a lot and has been telling us all about how they find it hard to get food when it’s snowy and cold so we need to feed them.”

Well done Brooke – you have been listening well. Those little birds will be really pleased that you are thinking of them in the cold weather.

Feed The Birds

After our recent days off Nursery due to snow, we had lots of bread that was heading for the bin in our snack area. However, the children decided to give the birds a little helping hand in the cold weather and very kindly put it out in the garden for them. No doubt our little feathered friends were very grateful for our help in the cold weather.

Burns Day

Last week we celebrated Burns Day with shortbread, tattie scones and cheese and, of course, Irn Bru. We appreciate everyone making a super effort to provide the children with ‘a touch o’ tartan’ – we thought that they looked wonderful. Here you can see some of the morning children enjoying their celebration. Afternoon photos will follow soon.

A Touch O’ Tartan

We would like to remind you that we plan to celebrate Burn’s Day with a small celebration tomorrow, Thursday 25th January. It would add to the occasion if the children could wear a little ‘touch o’ tartan’. Hopefully most of them have or can borrow a hairband, a ribbon or a scarf for the day and anyone who has a kilt or a tartan outfit would certainly help us to celebrate the day in style. If your child does not have anything tartan, please do not buy anything new as this is a very informal occasion and they will hopefully enjoy themselves regardless of what they are wearing.

Terrific Tartan

Over the past week the children have been learning a little about Scotland and Robert Burns. We have been looking at tartan in the art area where some super work has been created and a display is now up in Nursery. As well as sticking different coloured strips to design tartan, they have been creating patterns with paint and different sizes of rollers so we thought that we would share this little gallery with you. I wonder if anyone can spot their own tartan? Click then click again on photos to see the artist’s name.

The Sound Of Scottish Music

As part of our learning about Scotland, we put on some Scottish music this week and the children have loved it. They had great fun enthusiastically dancing to the sound of the pipes and pretending to march to the music while playing the drums. I wonder if any of them will take up Highland dancing or be part of a pipe band in the future?

How Do We Know That It’s Winter?

As part of our learning about the changing seasons, we have been talking to the children about how they know it is winter and what happens in winter. Here are a few of their ideas.
Crue: it gets very cold.
Fraser: robins come out. It’s minus one.
Alexa: it’s slippery ice.
Brooke: the water will freeze. We need to wrap up warm. We need a furry coat.
Jasmin: Santa comes and presents.
Annalise: it gets so cold.
Frankie: you can build a snowman. You need two snowballs, a big one and a little one.
Penny: the trees have no leaves.
Emily: the clouds are holding the snow. When the snow gets bigger, it comes out.
Skye: you might slip on your bottom.
Imoen: the snowflakes are on the car when it snows.
Olivia: we should leave bread out for the birds.
Tom: it snows.
Aoife: we need boots. We need to give the birds berries because they are hungry.
James: we need to wrap up warm.
Cali: we can throw snowballs.
Priya: there’s lots of snow on the trees.

We think that the children have some good ideas about the signs of winter. I wonder what they can see coming to Nursery that tells them it is winter time?
