With much of their recent learning having focussed on Scotland and Scottish traditions, the children in the Rainbow Room participated in a little celebration for Burns Day. The haggis was piped in (courtesy of Youtube) as the children marched behind it and we listened to a little of the “Address to the Haggis” as we sat down to enjoy our special Burns snack at tables covered with tartan made by the children. We all raised our glasses of Irn Bru in a toast to wish Robert Burns a ‘Happy Birthday’ and enjoyed a taste of haggis, tatties, neeps, tattie scones, oatcakes and cheese. Everyone seemed to enjoy the occasion and even those who were a little unsure to try new foods had smiles on their faces at our little gathering.

Visit From Gordon
As part of our learning about Scotland, we had a visit from Gordon who works at local shop, Glendinnings. He arrived in his full Highland attire and talked to the children about the various aspects of his outfit. Gordon showed us three big books of tartan samples and we were able to search for tartans belonging to some of our families which was exciting for the children as several of them could be found. Thank you very much to Gordon for his time and patience in helping the children learn about tartan.
Tartan
The Rainbow Room children having been looking at tartan and creating their own in the art area and on the Promethean board, just like those in the Raindrop Room.
Scotland And Scottish Traditions
With Burns Day approaching, the children have been learning about Scotland and Scottish traditions. In the Raindrop Room they have been trying on kilts, creating tartan using various media and enjoying the stories of Hairy Maclary. Some have even made their own stories about Hairy Maclary and his friends. Have a look at our display in the corridor to get a feel for what the children have been doing.
We would like to share a selection of their work. Click then click again on photos to see the detail of their stories and artwork.
Visit To The Post Office
After experiencing a post office in the role play area, the children extended their learning by visiting our local post office to buy stamps and post letters and parcels. It was great for them to get this first hand experience and to begin to use services in their local community.
Remembrance Day
Despite chilly weather, all our children walked to the war memorial today for Remembrance Day. They behaved beautifully and we were very proud of them standing quietly for the little service and the silence. Each room had made two wreaths which were laid at the foot of the war memorial so you may see them if you are on the High Street. Thank you to all our children for making us feel so proud of you.
Our Community
Visits out in to our local community are always popular with the children and those in the Raindrop Room had several walks out towards the end of term to find out about our local shops and businesses. They found out about the buildings on our High Street and took a trip to Tesco where they were very excited to have a look at the Hallowe’en displays. Learning how to pay at the self-serve till and the decision about where to put their tokens was all part of the experience.
Staying Safe
As the children from the Raindrop Room have been out and about in our community, talking about the different jobs and businesses in Annan, the local lollipop man came in to Nursery to talk about road safety. As you can see, the children had a little practice to help them focus on how to stay safe. Thank you so much to our lollipop man for taking the time to come to chat to us.
Autumn Hunt
The children in the Raindrop Room have had a few walks out in our community lately. This one, not far from Nursery, was to find Autumn leaves for their artwork. It may look green all around them but this group was very successful in finding lots of leaves of many colours to bring back to put to good use in Nursery. Autumn certainly seems to be with us.
Keep Annan Tidy
We had a visit from the council’s community safety team towards the end of term to learn all about littering and keeping the community tidy. One of the highlights of the event was the visit by the mechanical road sweeper. The children loved having the opportunity to operate some of the buttons and sit up in the driving seat. Thank you to the community safety team for taking so much time with the children to answer all their questions and for making sure that everyone who wanted to was able to sit up in the cab. Let’s hope that the children remember all that you told them about keeping our community clean and tidy.
