We hope that everyone is enjoying their summer holidays. Eileen, our Family Learning Co-ordinator, has been in Nursery this week and was amazed by the progress of our vegetables. The combination of the sunshine and Mr. Nicholson ensuring that they get watered daily has produced some fantastic courgettes, peas and beetroot. Hopefully, when we go back in August there will still be an opportunity to sample some of our produce.

Final Day Adventure
After lots of busy days with graduation and whole school celebrations as well, of course, as the visit from the Cornet and Cornet’s Lass, we eventually found time on the very last day of the year to return to Ollie’s allotment to check on the potatoes we had planted. It may officially be summer but we still needed wellies and suits in the rain for our little adventure.
As you can see, the children were delighted to find that their potatoes had grown. Hopefully, each of the children who chose to go to the allotment took a potato home to show their families. Thank you so much to Ollie’s family for providing us with this opportunity. It’s been great fun and a good learning experience. Sorry if your supply of potatoes will be depleted this summer.

Harvest Time
In the last few days we have been able to harvest some of the vegetables in our raised beds. Some of the children tasted rocket for the first time and seemed surprised that they actually liked it. Well done boys and girls for looking after your vegetables well.
Hecklegirth Gardeners
We have a message from Ollie’s Dad about the potatoes we planted at their allotment:
“Boys and girls. Just to let you know the potatoes you all planted have started to shoot so please pop by for a visit. Not quite ready for picking yet.”
Well done everyone! You are turning into expert gardeners.
Bye Bye Butterflies
After weeks of carefully watching the progress of our caterpillars from tiny little squiggles to big fat caterpillars who formed their cocoons, we finally saw our beautiful butterflies emerging at the end of last week. After a few days of nurturing them on sugary water and slices of oranges, the time came to release them. We could think of no better place to set them free than our outdoor classroom among the buttercups, trees and long grass.
Initially they seemed to be a little nervous of leaving their safe home but once we’d all had a close look at them and they had felt the sunshine on their wings, they flew away to cheers and clapping from everyone. We hope that we have captured the joy on the children’s faces as they watched their butterflies flying off to their new life.

Look What We’ve Grown
Last week’s sunshine and showers seemed to bring a sudden spurt of growth in our vegetable garden. The children have been excited to see the little courgettes starting to form and all the other vegetables which are showing great progress. Well done children and all those parents who helped in this project – you’ve obviously got great gardening skills. Thank you also to Eileen, our Family Learning Co-ordinator, for providing us with all our equipment and for organising this project. It’s been great fun and a super learning experience.

The Very Hungry Caterpillars
These were our caterpillars when they were very small but, as you know, they got bigger and bigger quite quickly. The exciting news now is that they have grown their cocoons and have been transferred to the nets. Hopefully, one day soon we will arrive in Nursery to see our beautiful butterflies emerging.
Update On Your Potatoes
Ollie’s family has left a comment for you all to keep you up to date with their allotment and the potatoes you planted.
“We are so glad that you had a fun time at our allotment and enjoyed the little buns after all your hard work. We have been enjoying the sun this week but we have been having to hose our potatoes each night so although we don’t actually want rain maybe a little that’s due tonight will help our potatoes grow. Remember boys and girls if you are ever out walking near the allotment pop in and say hello if we are around.”
We did all have great fun on our visit so thank you again from everyone. Maybe some of you boys and girls might be able to show your families where we went with Ollie’s family? I do see a little rain tonight so hopefully that will help the potatoes to grow.
Thank You To Our Gardeners
Planting is now complete in the garden and there are promising signs that everything is starting to grow which is exciting for the children. Eileen would like to say a big thank-you to all the adults who came to help and to the families who grew courgettes and beans at home – these have now been planted in the beds. We would like to say special thanks to Shay’s Grandad for the hints and tips and the lovely book on vegetable and herbs that he has donated to the Nursery. All we need to do now is wait for harvest time. We hope that everyone can keep an eye on the plants to see how they are doing.
Up the Muddy Hill on Ollie’s Adventure
Everyone is learning so much about growing this term and the latest venture for the morning children was to visit Ollie’s allotment. We donned our wellies and went on an adventure up the muddy hill and through the secret path to the little corner of Annan where Ollie’s family grows their vegetables.
Ollie’s Mum, his auntie and his cousins were there to meet us but really Ollie was the main guide of our tour. He showed us how to dig the soil (good teamwork there with Reilly to use that tricky tool) and where he likes to climb trees. We saw lots of different vegetables that they have planted and Ollie showed that he knew what he was doing when he pulled out two leeks which his Mum was going to use to make soup.
Ollie’s Mum had very kindly brought several different types of potatoes so that everyone could plant their own and we all put them in their own little hole and covered them up. Let’s hope we did a good job and that Ollie and his family have a big crop this year. We all had such a lovely time on our Ollie adventure that we didn’t think it could get any better. However, when we got back to Nursery, he even had a tasty little cake waiting for us all which he’d made at home. Thank you so much to Ollie and his family for your kind invitation. We had a brilliant time and I think some of us might pop back to your sunny little corner in a week or two to see if our potatoes have started to grow.
