Finlay Enjoyed the Coastguard’s Visit

Finlay’s Mum liked the photo of him trying on the lifejacket when the coastguard came to talk to us:

“Finlay said he had great fun when the coastguard came to visit, Finlay came home singing a song about the sea, I asked him who taught him that!, he said “The Coastguard, he told us to keep safe”. Finlay Certainly looks as though he had fun when trying on the lifejacket.”

The children were very interested in the coastguard’s advice and, as you can see from their comments, they had some good ideas about staying safe near water.

Staying Safe

As the weather warms up and we approach holiday time, the coastguard came to talk to the children about staying safe near water. The children were very enthusiastic to talk about their experiences and contributed lots of ideas to the discussions. We thought we would share some of their comments with you.

Nathan: there’s sinky sand at Powfoot.
Ericka: when the tide comes in, it washes away sandcastles.
Ollie: if you get stuck in the quicksand you could tie yourself to a tree and pull yourself out.
Nate: my Dad had to pull me out of my wellies in the sand.
Jaylin: if you’re on a rock and the tide comes in, it will pull you under the sea.
Rohan: if you get a jellyfish sting you put vinegar and brown paper on it.
Finlay: when the tide comes in you might get washed away.
Mark: sometimes whales go under water and they go on the sand and get stuck.
Nate: if you go to Powfoot beach you have to look at your watch to check the times.
Rory: when a storm comes there are very big waves.
Malachi: shells could hurt your feet.
Jessica: you don’t help someone who’s stuck or you could get stuck in the sand too.
Shay: the river goes to the Solway.
Emily: lifejackets keep you safe in the river.
Logan: call 999 if you need help.

Bye Bye Butterflies

After weeks of carefully watching the progress of our caterpillars from tiny little squiggles to big fat caterpillars who formed their cocoons, we finally saw our beautiful butterflies emerging at the end of last week. After a few days of nurturing them on sugary water and slices of oranges, the time came to release them. We could think of no better place to set them free than our outdoor classroom among the buttercups, trees and long grass.
Initially they seemed to be a little nervous of leaving their safe home but once we’d all had a close look at them and they had felt the sunshine on their wings, they flew away to cheers and clapping from everyone. We hope that we have captured the joy on the children’s faces as they watched their butterflies flying off to their new life.

Playground Fun

Primary 6 are delighted that the Nursery children and their parents are pleased with their buddying skills. Harli’s Mum has added a comment which will please Chloe:

“It makes us very happy as parents to know theres an extra friendly face looking out for Harli as she starts “big school”, she’s already been watching out to see if she can spot Chloe in the playground in the morning and has taken great pride in telling friends and family about her buddy.”

Today art aprons went up to Primary 6 with the children so you could ask them at home what they were doing. We thought it was about time we put up a few more photos of the children with their buddies so here are some from one of their visits to the playground.

Primary 6 Comments

Some of Primary 6 have been enjoying looking at our blog again.

Ashley said, “WOW even if I am not in a picture yet this blog is amazing! I have looked at all the pictures and they are spectacular. I just want to say thank you for putting these great photos on!”

Taylor commented on our photos saying,
“I had a great day, spending time with my two cute buddies Danny and Calise.:)”
and
“Me covering for Nathan with his Buddie Mishca! I had a great time.”

We’re glad that you’re enjoying looking at our blog and well done for making comments. Hopefully we will have more photos to put up soon.

The Very Hungry Caterpillars

These were our caterpillars when they were very small but, as you know, they got bigger and bigger quite quickly. The exciting news now is that they have grown their cocoons and have been transferred to the nets. Hopefully, one day soon we will arrive in Nursery to see our beautiful butterflies emerging.

Thank You

Thank you to Taylor from Primary 6 who has also left a comment on our blog:

“I had a really great time spending my first time with my buddies, I hope that the nursery pupils did too! and they behaved so perfectly.”

The Nursery children had a wonderful time with you all. You had planned your activities well with the children in mind and worked so hard to make sure that they had fun. Well done to all the Primary 6 buddies – you are stars!
