Firefighters Of The Future

Ian the firefighter kindly visited Nursery today to talk about his job and about how to stay safe in a fire. As well as discussing the dangers of matches, the children enjoyed some fun games to help them remember to stay low in a fire as they had to crawl under makeshift smoke in the form of a billowing parachute.
There was great discussion about a firefighter’s uniform and why he/she needs it to stay safe. As you can see, some of the children tried out a jacket and helmet for size but none of them managed to put on the uniform in the twenty seconds that Ian has to get his on when he’s going to a fire. We think that quite a few of the children like the idea of being our firefighters of the future. It will be interesting to see if any of them fulfill that wish.

Well Done Everyone

Carmen’s Mum enjoyed her library visit:

“The trip to the library was lovely. I fair enjoyed my time with the children they are a lovely group. I liked listening to the children answering Tina’s questions the children were very knowledge. They were extremely well behaved. Carmen says she really likes going on the visits to meet all these different people.”

Hopefully the adults who come with us on the rest of our visits will be equally impressed with the children. Well done boys and girls.

“Let’s Play At Being Primary 6”

Friday means Primary 6 day in Nursery as that is when they visit to play with the Nursery children. Primary 6 are all becoming very popular with the younger children and are proving themselves to be good role models who are patient and encouraging in their play. Children in the Sunshine Room have become so fond of their visitors that we are now hearing them say, “Let’s play at being Primary 6”. What greater compliment could you have? Thank you to everyone in Primary 6 who comes to play. You are showing yourselves to be responsible citizens and great role models to the Nursery children.

Library Visit Is A Success

Thank you to Liam and Sophie’s Mums for their comments about our visit to the library.

Sophie L.’s Mum: “I had a fantastic time coming to the Library, its certainly true that they were all very well behaved, such a credit to the School, well done!”

Liam’s Mum: “Liam had a great time at the Library. Thats all he talked about all day”.

It’s good to hear that children and parents enjoy our visits into the community. The children’s behaviour was very good and it’s nice to hear that Nursery is a credit to the school. Well done boys and girls!

Library Visit

The morning children paid a visit to our local library today as part of learning about our community and to celebrate World Book Day which is on Thursday. Everyone seemed to enjoy the super stories read by Tina and there was plenty opportunity for the children to discuss their own ideas after each one.
Lots of children seemed to be familiar with the library and hopefully more may join after their visit today. Thank you to all the parents who came along with us. We really appreciate your help. Thank you also to the children for making us very proud of you – your behaviour was excellent on the walk there and inside the library.

Doctors and Dentists

We would like to share more of the children’s ideas about what people do as part of their work. Our photos of the doctor’s surgery led to discussions about doctors and dentists.

Isla: you go to the dentist to sort your teeth.
Joey: they take your teeth out if they’re sore.
Amy-Leigh: the dentist might take a tooth out when you’re asleep.
Zachary: the dentist counts your teeth.
Ava V.: the dentist makes sure you clean your teeth.
Bethany: a dentist looks after teeth.
Mikey: the doctor says, “Don’t go to school tomorrow”.
Freya: the doctor makes you feel better.
Ben: we have a hospital and doctor’s in Annan. When you’re old they put something in your mouth and you get better.

I wonder if any of the boys or girls in Nursery will be doctors or dentists one day?

What Happens In The Police Station?

Part of our learning about our community is to develop an understanding of which jobs people can do and where they work. We have been looking at photos of a range of buildings in Annan and discussing what happens in them. The children are beginning to think about their community and we are having some interesting discussions about it.
Here are a few of their ideas about the police station.

Savannah: the police take away the bad people.
Mary: if we lose things we go to the police.
Rebecca: my Mummy lost her purse so we went to the police station.
Max: you ask a policeman if you get lost.
Mikey: the police have a car that goes vroom.
Dan: the police arrest people that’s bad.
Ben: police put the bad men in jail.
Archie: policemen work in the police station.

We think that P.C. Leggett will be impressed by the children’s knowledge when we visit the police station. He is looking forward to our visit when we can learn more about his job.

Our Restaurant

Carmen’s Mum enjoyed the recent photo in the Chinese restaurant:

“Aw wow! I love this photo of these three kids. Carmen says Lexi and Ava are her best friends. I asked her what she had in her bowl “she said broccoli mum”. She said she had to ask the boys and girls what they wanted to eat and she had to write it down. Ava took the money after they had eaten. Carmen didn’t tell me they had got dressed up that day, so I’m glad the teachers took photos or I wouldn’t have known.”

The restaurant has been a busy place over the past week with lots of good teamwork happening as the children take turns to write down orders, cook and take the money. Most seem very aware of what happens in a restaurant and have enjoyed taking part in imaginative role play.

Money, Money, Money

This week the morning children had a visit from the Financial Education Officer who provided a range of activities which engaged the children. They were all keen to talk about how they like to spend money and loved the interactive reading session which included lots of rhyme and actions. They showed good knowledge of how much the different coins were worth and had great fun making rubbings of coins. Thank you very much to Bev, the Financial Education Officer. We look forward to your visit next term when the afternoon children will enjoy learning about money with you.
