Staying Safe

Staying safe near electricity was the theme of one of our activities this week when we visited the school library. Andy told us all about the dangers of electricity and what we should do when we see someone doing something dangerous. If you suddenly hear your child shout “Stop!” and raise his or her hand, just ask them what they think you’ve done that is dangerous because they are very keen to watch out for grown-ups doing dangerous things. The children were very focussed during this discussion and enjoyed listening out for some of Andy’s questions about when we should say, “Stop!”
Meeting Sparky, Andy’s clever bird topped off a very enjoyable visit even though he was a little rascal who kept trying to bite off their fingers. As you can see from their faces, the children loved Sparky so thank you to Andy for bringing him along.

Planting and Growing

Tomorrow is Thursday so it must be planting and growing day with Eileen and our parent volunteers. Last week two of the groups planted onions and peas to add to the carrots and beetroot. The children are watching those raised beds closely so hopefully some of our vegetables will start to show soon.

Congratulations!

We had three Star Award winners last week in Nursery and they were all very well deserved. One was for showing super knowledge about the body and two showed very good understanding of how to look after a baby. Very well done all three of you. You certainly impressed us with your knowledge.

Fantastic Gardeners

Thank you to those of you who have been bringing in your courgette and pea plants which have grown from the seeds you planted with your families at the end of last term. You have obviously been looking after them well at home and they will be super additions to our garden growing area. Eileen is amazed at the size of some of your plants and will see you soon to find a space for them in our raised beds. Well done you fantastic gardeners. I wonder if anyone else has managed to make such a good job of looking after their plants?

Our Lowry Street

Towards the end of term we were learning a little about the artist, L. S. Lowry. We compared the scenes in his paintings to Annan and talked about his life. We tried to make some street scenes for display just like Lowry and here are some of our efforts. Can you spot your painting?

We Made a Difference

“Wear red and white to make a difference” was the message on the last day of term in Nursery to support the fundraising efforts of Team 15 at Dumfries and Galloway College. They had organised several events to raise money for their chosen charities, "The Parksafe Campaign" and "Robin House", and we were delighted to support them. As you can see, there was a mass of red and white on the day so thank you to everyone who supported this good cause. Your donations raised £54.91 which was very gratefully received by Team 15. We hope that the rest of their fundraising events were a great success.

Easter Egg Extravaganza

Eggs that had been transformed into bees, policemen, trains, rabbits … glittery eggs and painted eggs … the variety was amazing in our Easter egg display. Here’s a taster of some of the ideas brought in to Nursery. Well done to everyone who made such a fantastic effort – we loved them all.

Congratulations

Heckie’s Happy Healthy Week brought lots of different competitions which many of you entered. It was great to see your wonderful ideas for a sports person made out of fruit and vegetables, the poster competition and the healthy packed lunch design. Thanks to all the family members who helped the children enjoy these activities at home. We also had certificates for being the best Junior Fire Officer and for giving the best effort at the Keep Fit activity.
Primary 6 were very impressed with the Nursery entries and several children won prizes and certificates. Well done to all who entered and congratulations to those who were winners. Thank you again to Primary 6 for being so organised with awarding your prizes and for making Nursery children feel special.

Keep Fit with Primary 6

Primary 6 made such a fantastic job of “Heckie’s Happy Healthy Week” last week and one of the best events for Nursery was the keep fit activity organised by a small group of Primary 6 children.
To help plan their idea, they came to ask staff details about our numbers and what the children would be able to do and would enjoy. They listened well and made notes so that they were sure that their event would be successful. They even came to watch the children doing a music and movement activity to get an idea of what to expect. It was quite clear that their careful planning paid off as they produced a fun, challenging keep fit session which the Nursery children absolutely loved. Stretching, jumping, jogging … you name it, they did it and all to the background of music which added to the event. They had even thought to bring a story to read to the children at the end while they were all given stickers for their efforts.
We say, “Three cheers for Louis, Aiden and Lauren!” for being so kind to think of Nursery children and for planning such a brilliant activity.

What Clean Teeth You’ve Got Monkey!

As part of our Health Week, Claire from Childsmile visited us to talk to the children about the importance of cleaning our teeth and a good diet to keep our teeth healthy. As you can see, everyone enjoyed having a turn at cleaning monkey’s teeth although we think he would need more than the pea-sized blob of toothpaste that Claire told us we should use. What clean teeth you’ve got Monkey!
