Star Award Winners

Last week our Health and Wellbeing focus was on politeness and manners. We have now established our Nursery rules and the children have been asked to try their best to use ‘please’, ‘thank you’ and ’sorry’ appropriately.
As part of a whole school award system linked to our Health and Wellbeing curriculum, Hecklegirth Star Awards will be given to children who have demonstrated success in this area of their learning. Well done to our first award winners who showed wonderful manners and consideration towards others. We feel sure that your families must be very proud of you.

More Buddy Fun

Here’s another little insight into the excellent work of the Primary 6 buddies. It’s lovely to see these relationships building. Well done Primary 6 and thank you Mrs. Johnston for all your hard work.

Brilliant Buddies

Primary 6 have been doing a fantastic job in taking on the role of buddies to the children who will be going in to Primary 1 at Hecklegirth in August. Mrs. Johnston has encouraged them to think about what Nursery children would enjoy and to plan activities for them. Primary 6 have certainly taken this job very seriously and have planned activities in a thoughtful way.
They have written letters to you as parents and introduced themselves to you which hopefully, has made you feel a little more confident about your child’s transition to Primary 1. They also planned the activities on offer when Nursery children visited their classroom to play and were very caring when they went out to the playground at interval. Lots more activities are planned by Primary 6 and we would like to thank them for all their hard work in looking after our children. You are turning into brilliant buddies so keep up the good work. Thank You To Our Gardeners

Planting is now complete in the garden and there are promising signs that everything is starting to grow which is exciting for the children. Eileen would like to say a big thank-you to all the adults who came to help and to the families who grew courgettes and beans at home – these have now been planted in the beds. We would like to say special thanks to Shay’s Grandad for the hints and tips and the lovely book on vegetable and herbs that he has donated to the Nursery. All we need to do now is wait for harvest time. We hope that everyone can keep an eye on the plants to see how they are doing.

Isn’t this a lovely smile from this week’s Star Award winner? He was chosen for this certificate for showing kindness towards others. Well done for being such a kind boy. We are very proud of you.

Up the Muddy Hill on Ollie’s Adventure

Everyone is learning so much about growing this term and the latest venture for the morning children was to visit Ollie’s allotment. We donned our wellies and went on an adventure up the muddy hill and through the secret path to the little corner of Annan where Ollie’s family grows their vegetables.
Ollie’s Mum, his auntie and his cousins were there to meet us but really Ollie was the main guide of our tour. He showed us how to dig the soil (good teamwork there with Reilly to use that tricky tool) and where he likes to climb trees. We saw lots of different vegetables that they have planted and Ollie showed that he knew what he was doing when he pulled out two leeks which his Mum was going to use to make soup.
Ollie’s Mum had very kindly brought several different types of potatoes so that everyone could plant their own and we all put them in their own little hole and covered them up. Let’s hope we did a good job and that Ollie and his family have a big crop this year. We all had such a lovely time on our Ollie adventure that we didn’t think it could get any better. However, when we got back to Nursery, he even had a tasty little cake waiting for us all which he’d made at home. Thank you so much to Ollie and his family for your kind invitation. We had a brilliant time and I think some of us might pop back to your sunny little corner in a week or two to see if our potatoes have started to grow.

Who Lives In Our Garden?

As we continue to learn about growth and life cycles, we have been extending our learning to the outdoors where the children have been searching for minibeasts. Gardening tools, magnifying boards and clipboards have been at the ready as the children search for evidence of minibeasts in our garden. Here is some of the detective team in action.

Health and Hygiene

Rachel, our School Nurse, paid us a visit last week to teach the children about a healthy lifestyle. We talked about exercise, healthy foods and good hygiene as well as the importance of sleep.
A special magic machine then helped us to check how good we are at washing our hands. The children had to wash their hands, apply the “magic spray” then check under Rachel’s special machine to see if they could still see any germs. I think they were quite amazed to see that their hands were not as clean as they thought so, hopefully, handwashing should be more thorough from now on.
