Medals and Ice Lollies

We would like to thank everyone who came to cheer the children on their Fun Activity Day despite chilly weather. We are sure that, like us, you felt very proud of them all as they confidently showed off their skills and great teamwork. Those medals and ice lollies were certainly well deserved and we hope that you enjoyed the day as much as we did. Well done boys and girls – you really were ‘confident individuals’. Thank you also to the ‘responsible citizens’ of Primary 6 and 7/6 who were super helpers on the day. Here are some photos from the morning event. The afternoon photos will be posted soon.

Fun Activity Day

The children have been practising their running and jumping skills to prepare for our Fun Activity Day tomorrow (Thursday). They have shown good teamwork and had great fun although at times, as you can see from the photos, we have had to have our coats on due to chilly weather. We are looking forward to lots of families cheering everyone on as they show you what they can do – we hope to bring the children on to the field around 9.30 and 1.30. Fingers crossed for sunshine tomorrow.

Wheely Good Day

Last week we had a “Wheely Good Day” when the school had a breakfast club for all those who brought their bikes or scooters, followed by fun activities for both morning and afternoon Nursery children as well as those in school. It was great to see that some Nursery children joined us for a breakfast of yoghurt, cereal bars, fruit and a drink and we were delighted with the number who brought their bikes and scooters to take part in the activities on offer.
Thank you to everyone who helped to organise this event and gave up their own time. What a great way to keep fit and healthy – the children had super fun.

Playground Pals

The school playground had some excited visitors last week when the children moving to Hecklegirth P1 in August went out to play at break and lunch times. Despite a very busy playground, the buddies ensured that all the children were confident and happy to try out the different areas although, as you can see, the timber trail was by far the most popular. It was wonderful to see how much the children had grown in confidence to visit different areas of the school and they even managed to line up before going back in to Nursery. Just look at all those happy faces! Hopefully we will manage another visit to the playground soon.

Fun In The Sun

The children returned to some lovely weather at the start of this term and most took full advantage of the opportunity to access the outdoor area. As you can see, some enjoyed reading a story or painting as they took a little breather from climbing, digging, den building or any of the more physical outdoor activities. Let’s hope the sun keeps visiting us this term to give everyone a big smile on their faces.

Snow Scenes

Although the winter weather caused Nursery to be closed one day last week, there was still plenty of snow in the garden to have fun with when we returned. Despite our best efforts, it was tricky to make a snowman but the children soon produced alternative ways to use this exciting resource. Snow angels and snow castles, made using buckets, were very popular as was rolling tyres and barrels through the snow to investigate what tracks they made. We made snow pies instead of mud pies and there were some super discussions about where the best snow was, how long it would stay and what would happen to it.

Cold Weather House

houseThe cold weather doesn’t seem to want to go away so today a small group of children decided that they needed to make a house in the garden to stay warm. house2
As you can see, they made a good job of it and added little chairs inside so that they didn’t have to sit on the cold ground. Of course, as we all know, the housework still has to be done regardless of the weather, so they even took it in turns to clean the windows and doors.

Winter Weather

What better way is there to learn about the signs of winter than to be outdoors on a frosty morning? The effects of last night’s frost brought excitement and great opportunities for the children to learn about the effects of winter weather.
Big lumps of ice became precious treasure and the children had lots of discussion about how it felt and what would happen to it if they took it inside. Great amusement was caused by lots of spades and jugs which were stuck together by ice. Some experimented in the water tray which had crystals of ice across the bottom and others learned how difficult it is to dig the garden when the ground’s frozen. The children decided to make a drill with a range of equipment to break the surface of the digging area and, when this didn’t work, they wondered if breathing on it might help.
A few flickers of snow brought lots of excitement as they planned where their snowman would be but the snow did not materialise so that will have to be for another day. Well done all you super thinkers who were outdoors this morning – you helped each other to learn about the effects of winter.

A Cosy Campfire

Planks of wood and a few logs were all that were needed for this group of children to show good enterprising skills and teamwork. They worked so well together, listening to each others’ ideas and showing great focus and perseverance to build a den. The logs were used to make a campfire which one little girl pretended to start by rubbing two sticks together “because it’s what camper people do” and they happily cooked sausages and potatoes. Grass and leaves were put on the roof to “make it cosy” and, at one point, a horse was invited to tea. What a fantastic team!

Kandinsky Gallery

We have been learning about the work of the artist Kandinsky in Nursery and have compared his work to that of Arcimboldo which was so enjoyed by the children last term. A range of media has been used to create artwork in the style of Kandinsky and the children have been amazed and delighted to be able to produce a piece of art that looks similar to that of a famous artist. As you can see, some of their super work has been done outdoors as well as indoors for display. We hope that enjoy our little Kandinsky gallery. I wonder if the children can find their own work?
