As part of our celebration of Hecklegirth’s Gold Sports Award, some of our children enjoyed taking part in a 10 Station Fitness Challenge in the playground on Monday with Primary 1. As you can see, a wide range of activities were on offer and everyone had fun having a go at lots of different experiences. Thanks go to all those who helped the children to have a great afternoon.

Ten Station Fitness Challenge
To celebrate Hecklegirth’s achievement, the school will be presented with a Gold Sports Award by a representative of Sport Scotland tomorrow, Monday 3rd December. The whole school will then be having an afternoon of fun sports activities to celebrate our achievement.
As part of this, afternoon Nursery children will take part in a Ten Station Fitness Challenge in the playground with Primary 1. We would ask that children come with warm clothes and coats as we will all be going outdoors to take part. Let’s hope that the rain stays away to help us have a fun time with Primary 1.
Freezing And Melting
This week saw the first signs of winter appearing in our outdoor area and some of the children were very excited to discover ice in a tub. What better way to learn about melting than to see it happening before your eyes? The children certainly showed that they were beginning to think about what was happening.
“It’s so cold.”
“We found hard ice.”
“It makes my gloves go wet.”
“It disappears away.”
“You go so fast on the slide when there’s ice.”
“It feels slippy and hard.”
“It’s sometimes water too.”
No doubt Jack Frost will provide lots more opportunities to learn about freezing and melting over the next few months.
Pumpkin Picnic
Once we had enjoyed our Hallowe’en celebrations, we had to decide what to do with our pumpkins. The children helped to prepare them for outdoors as we thought that the birds and insects might like to have a little feast on them. It was quite hard work but an enthusiastic little group were great helpers preparing the pumpkins and placing them in various positions in the outdoor area. We hope that the visitors to our garden enjoyed their picnic.
Afternoon Sparkles
As promised, here are some of the children in the afternoon enjoying trying out some sparklers at the start of the week.
Sparkling Learning
Sparklers are a great way to learn about staying safe on Bonfire Night and the children listened well to all our instructions when we enjoyed them in the Nursery garden on Monday. We talked about how to behave, who is allowed to light fireworks and all learned about putting the sparkler in water once it was finished.
Some were more cautious than others but everyone was happy to hold a sparkler so well done boys and girls for being confident to try out something that was new to many. Here is a gallery of some of the morning children busy with their sparklers. We will post some of the afternoon children soon.
Marshmallow Toasting
We would like to share these photos from the end of last term. There seemed to be so much happening at the end of term that we didn’t manage to post these at the time but we thought that you would like this little gallery of marshmallow toasting with the afternoon children.
Digging And Transporting
The digging area is very popular, with lots of great imaginary play taking place there every day, and the children often want to transport the soil around the garden so we have created a little path for them within the digging area. This has provided opportunities to fill their barrows and wheel them along the path to tip the soil from one area to another which the children have loved. Here is a little team busy at work in this area.
Experimenting With Colour
I wonder how many of you have tried out those little tester pots of paint at home and spent ages comparing different shades? These children had great fun recently, mixing paint and experimenting with colours to paint outdoors. As with most art at this stage, it was the process of experimentation, rather than the end result of lots of wood painted in various colours, that was the most creative and exciting part of the activity. They mixed, measured, poured and did lots of talking about their findings as part of the process. Great teamwork boys and girls!
Autumn Art
As part of our recent learning about the changing seasons, a group of children visited the nature area to look for signs of Autumn and were very good detectives, collecting lots of leaves to help them produce some super works of art. They kindly shared their finds with the rest of the children and lots of fun was had creating prints of the Autumn leaves. I wonder if anyone has tried this out at home in the holidays?
