Maths Week Scotland

Thank you to those families who have taken part in Maths Week Scotland by bringing in examples of numbers and shapes in their environment. It is lovely to see the children sharing their learning with us. We hope that lots of you are looking for numbers and shapes out in our community and will be bringing us pictures, cuttings, photos etc. to add to our display.

Learning in the Rain

For most adults, hours of heavy rain are not likely to put smiles on their faces, but for Nursery children it provides great opportunities for fun experimentation especially when we add some washing-up liquid and a few appropriate resources.
After a recent heavy deluge we had a range of objects out in the garden which produced some valuable discussions about floating and sinking as well as lots of pouring and measuring to develop numeracy skills. The children worked so well together and enjoyed investigating their ideas in a real life context. Great fun was had, for example, by our younger children experimenting to balance their little ducks on a floating piece of wood. What better way to learn some early science?
It may have been a little inconvenient for adults to use a different entrance to Nursery but the children certainly took advantage of conditions that were very exciting for them.

Talking About Autumn

Learning about Autumn this term has been helped greatly by the children’s super contributions to our display. Chestnuts, acorns, various berries and leaves of so many colours have been collected by the children and their families. Good talking skills have been evident as the children shared their finds with others and talked about where they had found them. Thank you so much to all those families who have taken the time to talk to their children about the signs of Autumn and have helped them find examples. The children have shown great enthusiasm to look at and talk about our display.

Why Do We Need Numbers?

As part of our recent activities based on National Maths Week, we talked to the children about why we need numbers. Here are a few of their ideas.

Brooke: you have numbers on buses so you know where you’re going to and what one to go on.
Imoen: the postman needs to know your number.
Olivia B.: we have clocks with numbers so we can see what time it is.
Matthew: I’ve got a new letter box with a number.
Enid: I’ve got a number on my door so people know where you live.
Patrick: you have signs on the road with letters and numbers to show you where to go.
Louie: you need numbers to count.
Olivia H.: there’s numbers on a clock.
James: you need a number on your shirt to say what team you’re in to play rugby.
Cali: my door is number three.

We hope that everyone is keeping an eye out for numbers when they are out and about with their families. I wonder how many other places you can find numbers?

Eadie’s Numbers

Based on our recent learning about numbers for National Maths Week, Eadie worked at home with her family to produce a wonderful poster showing all the places she had seen numbers in her community. Mrs. Alexander was very impressed with Eadie’s poster and was interested to hear her talk about the ‘winner’ and the ‘loser’ numbers from the tombola. Great work Eadie! We hope that your family was impressed with your special sticker from Mrs. Alexander.

Shape Art

As part of our work for Maths Week, the children focussed their learning on shape and have experimented with printing using shapes in the art area. As you can see they have produced some bright, attractive pieces of artwork at the same time as developing their learning about maths.

Numbers and Shapes

Thank you to all those families who have taken part in the national Maths Week by bringing in examples of numbers and shapes from their environment. It is lovely to see the children enthusiastic about maths and sharing their learning with us. Here are more photos from this special week. Well done everyone for producing a great display.

Maths Here,There and Everywhere

The children have been bringing in a selection of numbers and shapes that they have found in their community to celebrate National Maths Week. We have calendars, clocks, phones, pages from catalogues as well as photos of birthday cakes, cards and road signs seen on the way to Nursery. The children’s display shows just how often numbers and shapes appear in our daily lives and is making them aware of Maths being all around us. Thank you to all those families who have been busy for Maths Week. We look forward to seeing more examples of what the children can find.

Maths Week

We would like to remind you that this week (beginning 11th September) is Scotland’s first Maths Week, a week dedicated to numeracy and mathematics.
To encourage the children’s participation in this national event, we would like them to look out for numbers and shapes in the environment. We would be delighted if they brought examples to Nursery of what they find. This might be some packaging, a cutting from a catalogue or magazine or a photo of something they have found when out and about in the community with their families, such as a road sign or a door number.
We will display the children’s findings in Nursery so that they can be shared and discussed with everyone. We look forward to seeing what the children can find.
