What Can We Do That Animals Can’t?

As we have been learning about our bodies this week, we have been talking about what our bodies can do and comparing what we can do with what animals can do. In the Sunshine Room we had a tricky question:
“What can we do that animals can’t do?”
This certainly made our brains work hard and the children showed good thinking skills with some of their answers.

Lexi: nod our heads.
William: animals can’t walk on roofs or wash their hands.
Sophie L.: they can’t draw.
Reagyn: they can’t hold a pen.
Carmen: they can’t hold hands and they can’t make music.
Deryn: they can’t make a banana sandwich.
Ava: we can brush our teeth but animals can’t.
Conan: they can’t drive.
Carmen: they can’t talk.
Roxy: animals can’t read.
Sophie L.: we can write our name but they can’t.

We think that you all showed good thinking skills coming up with some clever ideas. You were also very good at thinking of examples of animals who could do some of these things, for example, Reagyn told us that crickets make music and Conan said that monkeys can hold hands. I wonder if anyone can come up with any other clever ideas?

Letters and Numbers

Bethany’s Mum commented on our hunt round school looking for letters and numbers:

“Bethany is getting very excited about letters and numbers! Thank you for all your hard work.”

It’s great to hear that Bethany’s enjoying her learning. We are looking forward to you filling our cauldrons this week with letters and numbers that you find at home. Don’t forget to bring them in to Nursery. I wonder which you will find most of – will it be letters or numbers?

Numbers, Letters and Pictures

This week we have been talking about the difference between numbers, letters and pictures. To help us in our learning we went on a hunt around school to see if we could find examples and some children took photos as evidence. As well as the numbers, letter and pictures which had been laid in a trail, there were lots of other examples on our journey. We found numbers on P3’s brilliant rocket that was outside their classroom and letters on the mat at the school entrance. There were numbers on lunch boxes and display boards provided lots of letters and numbers, sometimes together, for example, “P7”. Hopefully, the children are now more aware of numbers and letters in their environment and will start to spot them when out and about with their families.

Den Making

Den making is becoming popular with the children in the Nursery garden. They are showing good problem solving skills and are working well in teams to make their dens.
Here you can see some children from the Rainbow Room who decided to make a house for the three little pigs so that they could hide from the big bad wolf. As you can see, they had to work as a team to make their frame then persevered well to position the tarpaulin to make their den. When a group of children from the Sunshine Room came to play in the den they turned it into a home for the three bears which is the story they have been focussing on in their room last week.
Problem-solving, teamwork and imaginative play were all developed from a tarpaulin and some wooden poles which just goes to show how enterprising and creative our children are. Well done boys and girls!

Bring A Bear Day

We had some very special visitors to the Sunshine Room one day last week as Miss Murray asked the children to bring in their favourite bears as part of a Listening and Talking activity. The children were excited to tell us about their bears and the bears certainly seemed to enjoy their time in Nursery.
We thought that you would enjoy some of the children’s comments and photos of our special visitors.

Deryn: it’s Gizmo. I got it on holiday.
Ava: it’s George. He’s on the tele’. He stays on my bed.
Logan: Barney sleeps on my bed. We’ve got bunk beds. I like him ’cause he can dance.
William: his name’s Patch because he’s got his name on his collar. He can do flips.
Robbie: I love her. She’s called Sky.
Roxy: I love her ’cause I can cuddle her. She’s called Lucy and she’s got glasses, clothes and a hat.
Fearne: he’s Neville. He sleeps in my bed and plays with me in the morning. He sits on my pillow.
Rebecca: I got it when I was a baby. I cuddle up with it in my bed.

Outdoor Classroom

It must be almost summer now as we seem to be spending more and more time outdoors. It was so gorgeous last week that we decided to visit our outdoor classroom at the front of the school and what a wonderful time the children had. They enjoyed investigating everything in sight with great excitement and, to finish off our visit, we all settled down in the seating area for a story. Let’s hope that the sun keeps shining so that we can enjoy lots more visits to this lovely area of the school.

Baby Photos

We are looking forward to seeing everyone in Nursery tomorrow. We would like to remind you to bring in your baby photos, if possible, to promote our discussions about how we change as we get older. It should be good fun for the children to try to pick out which photo belongs to which child and will bring to life our learning about growth and how to look after a baby.

Learning About The Seasons

To help us learn about Spring, we have been talking about our previous learning about the seasons. We talked about what happens in each season and what sort of clothes we wear. Some of the children gave some good answers in these discussions and we thought you’d like us to share some of them with you.

Mischa: Autumn’s the windy one. Kailey: the leaves fall off in Autumn.
Grace: you get conkers in Autumn. Kyle: when it’s windy you need a coat.
Nate: we wear water suits when it’s rainy and things are wet and muddy.

Emily: you need warm clothes, hats, scarves, gloves and boots in Winter.
Liam: Santa comes in Winter Ava: you need a warm coat to keep cosy.
Imogen: you need your wellies in Winter and scarves, hats and gloves.
Shay: we see snow in Winter. Katie: the icicles come.

Ollie: you get your paddling pool out in Summer.
Adam J.: you wear T-shirts and hats when it’s hot.
Mischa: you wear dresses in Summer and you can get your goggles out.
Ava: you need swimming wear.

AND WHAT ABOUT SPRING?
Malachi: trees grow. Isaac: flowers pop out.
Joseph: all the bulbs grow and the leaves go back on the branches.
Grace: the baby sheep are born and blossom trees grow.
Scott: baby lambs come out of the mummy’s tummy.
Rohan: trees grow and I planted one at my Dad’s.
Summer: you get Easter eggs.
Neve: baby chicks are born and blossom comes on trees.
Hannah: the trees get leaves.
Dawid H.: the flowers grow.

What Did You Think of Keep Fit?

Now that you can see the photos of our Keep Fit activity with the Primary 6 children, we thought we would share some of the comments the children gave on returning to Nursery. These quotes from the Sunshine Room certainly sound like positive feedback for Lauren, Aiden and Louis.

Scott: the star jumps were tricky.
Jordan: my legs nearly broke with running.
Harli: all of it was the best.
Mark: it was hard work but good.
Jaylin: I liked Lauren’s things when we had to shape out like a star.
Summer: I liked the running. It was hard but I could do it.
Finlay: the jumping jacks were the best.
Robbie: my sticker was the best.
Madison: I liked the running ’cause it was going round.
Hollie: running was best.
Evie: I liked the running and exercise bit.
Skye: I liked the jumping bit ’cause I like it ’cause it makes me tired.
Neve: I liked the running best ’cause it’s healthy.
Paige: the running made me tired. I liked the music too.
Hannah: I liked getting the sticker.
Jacquie: the running was good.

Library Visit

To celebrate World Book Day last week, we made three visits to Annan Library with different groups. The morning children from the Rainbow Room can be seen here on their outing. For some it was their first visit to the library and for others it was obviously a familiar place. Everyone enjoyed a super selection of stories read by the librarian and the children seemed enthusiastic to revisit the library in the future with their families. We have some application forms to join the library in Nursery so please ask staff if you would like one.
