Final Day Adventure

After lots of busy days with graduation and whole school celebrations as well, of course, as the visit from the Cornet and Cornet’s Lass, we eventually found time on the very last day of the year to return to Ollie’s allotment to check on the potatoes we had planted. It may officially be summer but we still needed wellies and suits in the rain for our little adventure.
As you can see, the children were delighted to find that their potatoes had grown. Hopefully, each of the children who chose to go to the allotment took a potato home to show their families. Thank you so much to Ollie’s family for providing us with this opportunity. It’s been great fun and a good learning experience. Sorry if your supply of potatoes will be depleted this summer.

Graduation Smiles

How proud we all were of the children at our graduation ceremony on Friday as they sang and danced to celebrate the end of their year in Nursery. Sometimes the children can become a little shy when faced with an audience but the 100 plus family members who came to watch them, in both the morning and afternoon, were entertained by confident, happy little performers. We hope that you were also impressed with the confident manner in which the children walked on stage to shake hands and receive their certificates. The children had been so excited to perform for their families and they certainly did not disappoint.
Thank you so much to everyone who came to our little ceremony and for all your support throughout the year.

Finlay Enjoyed the Coastguard’s Visit

Finlay’s Mum liked the photo of him trying on the lifejacket when the coastguard came to talk to us:

“Finlay said he had great fun when the coastguard came to visit, Finlay came home singing a song about the sea, I asked him who taught him that!, he said “The Coastguard, he told us to keep safe”. Finlay Certainly looks as though he had fun when trying on the lifejacket.”

The children were very interested in the coastguard’s advice and, as you can see from their comments, they had some good ideas about staying safe near water.

Staying Safe

As the weather warms up and we approach holiday time, the coastguard came to talk to the children about staying safe near water. The children were very enthusiastic to talk about their experiences and contributed lots of ideas to the discussions. We thought we would share some of their comments with you.

Nathan: there’s sinky sand at Powfoot.
Ericka: when the tide comes in, it washes away sandcastles.
Ollie: if you get stuck in the quicksand you could tie yourself to a tree and pull yourself out.
Nate: my Dad had to pull me out of my wellies in the sand.
Jaylin: if you’re on a rock and the tide comes in, it will pull you under the sea.
Rohan: if you get a jellyfish sting you put vinegar and brown paper on it.
Finlay: when the tide comes in you might get washed away.
Mark: sometimes whales go under water and they go on the sand and get stuck.
Nate: if you go to Powfoot beach you have to look at your watch to check the times.
Rory: when a storm comes there are very big waves.
Malachi: shells could hurt your feet.
Jessica: you don’t help someone who’s stuck or you could get stuck in the sand too.
Shay: the river goes to the Solway.
Emily: lifejackets keep you safe in the river.
Logan: call 999 if you need help.

Hecklegirth Gardeners

We have a message from Ollie’s Dad about the potatoes we planted at their allotment:

“Boys and girls. Just to let you know the potatoes you all planted have started to shoot so please pop by for a visit. Not quite ready for picking yet.”

Well done everyone! You are turning into expert gardeners.

Bye Bye Butterflies

After weeks of carefully watching the progress of our caterpillars from tiny little squiggles to big fat caterpillars who formed their cocoons, we finally saw our beautiful butterflies emerging at the end of last week. After a few days of nurturing them on sugary water and slices of oranges, the time came to release them. We could think of no better place to set them free than our outdoor classroom among the buttercups, trees and long grass.
Initially they seemed to be a little nervous of leaving their safe home but once we’d all had a close look at them and they had felt the sunshine on their wings, they flew away to cheers and clapping from everyone. We hope that we have captured the joy on the children’s faces as they watched their butterflies flying off to their new life.

More Buddy Comments

Amelia from Primary 6 has been commenting on some of our posts on Nursery and Primary 6 buddies:

“amazingly me and my beautiful buddies played for half an hour it was great fun”

“Nate wanted to build the tallest tower in the world but in they end it fell over with a SMASH!!!”

You and the rest of your class are proving to be brilliant buddies Amelia. Thank you for taking time to comment on our blog and keep up the good work.

Farmer’s Den

Corey’s Mum made a comment on one of the photos from our recent summer outing:

“Corey had a brilliant time at the cinema and farmers den thank you to all the staff for giving the kids a lovely treat”

Amelia from Primary 6 also commented on our outing:

“It seems as if my amazing buddy Nate enjoyed it at farmers den !”

They certainly did seem to enjoy their day and everyone behaved beautifully.

Snack Time

It seems to have been so hectic in Nursery recently that the days are simply flying by. However, we did find time to visit the dining hall for our snack one day to give the children an idea of what it will be like when they move to Primary 1. As you can see they were all quite happy to enjoy something to eat in a different environment so this bodes well for the next exciting step of school lunches.
