When I Grow Up I Want To Be …

The more careers the children find out about, the harder it is for them to think about what they would like to do when they are grown-up. The Rainbow Room children have been sharing some of their ideas for the future.

Zachary: I want to be a policeman. You get to chase people.
Ava V.: I’d like to be a fairy and I’ll make wishes for everyone.
Ben: I want to play football in a big boys’ team and get big boys’ jumpers and big
boys’ shorts and shoes when I grow up.
Archie: I want to work at the bank.
Riley: I want to be a farmer and get a tractor.
Kailey: I want to be a Highland dancing teacher ’cause it’s very tricky.
Theo: I want to be a music person. I need to play the guitar.
Armana: I want to have sweetie shop.
Bethany: I want to be a builder.
Joey: I want to be a prince and sit down all the time.
Sophie D.: I want to be a ballet dancer.
Simon: I want to be a fireman.
Sophie S.: I want to be a fairy with a magic wand.

What a fantastic selection of ideas!

The Paramedic Papa

An exciting visitor came to talk to us about his job this week. Armana’s Papa not only showed us the equipment he uses as a paramedic but he was able to let the children see inside an ambulance. They learned what happens when you go to hospital and what a paramedic uses the different equipment for. The children showed particular interest in everything inside the ambulance and enjoyed trying out the bed – a bed with seatbelts not something most had seen before. Of course no visit by an ambulance is complete without seeing the flashing blue lights and hearing the siren. As you can see from the photos, the siren made an impressive noise as the children covered their ears when it came on.
We would all like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to Armana’s Papa for spending so much time in Nursery helping the children to learn about his job. We think a few are now having a change of mind over their future careers.

Polly The Lamb Visits Nursery

The Rainbow Room voted recently to have a vet’s surgery in their role play area and it has seen lots of imaginative play in the past week. There was great excitement on Friday afternoon when, instead of our fluffy dogs, cats and hamsters, a real lamb visited us in Nursery.
Simon and his family have been looking after little Polly the lamb at home and his Mum kindly brought her in to see us. Although just six days old, Polly was not shy and seemed to enjoy all the attention in the Nursery garden. Everyone was able to stroke her and some even fed her from her bottle which was very exciting. Thank you to Simon’s Mum and Polly the lamb from all the afternoon boys and girls.

Firefighters At The Ready

Ian the firefighter was kind enough to visit the afternoon children as well as those in the morning. He seems to have turned this into a popular career choice as lots of the children liked the idea of being firefighters in the future. We hope that you enjoy the photos of the afternoon children getting into the spirit of things when learning about staying safe in a fire and what a firefighter’s job involves.

Firefighters Of The Future

Ian the firefighter kindly visited Nursery today to talk about his job and about how to stay safe in a fire. As well as discussing the dangers of matches, the children enjoyed some fun games to help them remember to stay low in a fire as they had to crawl under makeshift smoke in the form of a billowing parachute.
There was great discussion about a firefighter’s uniform and why he/she needs it to stay safe. As you can see, some of the children tried out a jacket and helmet for size but none of them managed to put on the uniform in the twenty seconds that Ian has to get his on when he’s going to a fire. We think that quite a few of the children like the idea of being our firefighters of the future. It will be interesting to see if any of them fulfill that wish.

“Let’s Play At Being Primary 6”

Friday means Primary 6 day in Nursery as that is when they visit to play with the Nursery children. Primary 6 are all becoming very popular with the younger children and are proving themselves to be good role models who are patient and encouraging in their play. Children in the Sunshine Room have become so fond of their visitors that we are now hearing them say, “Let’s play at being Primary 6”. What greater compliment could you have? Thank you to everyone in Primary 6 who comes to play. You are showing yourselves to be responsible citizens and great role models to the Nursery children.

Love Is In The Air

Last week we talked about Valentine’s Day and what it means. The children were keen to share their ideas on who they love and why. We also discussed what they could do to show someone that they loved them. We thought that you might enjoy a few of their ideas.

Ava V.: Auntie Sarah reads me stories. I love my family and friends. I can give them hugs to make them happy.
Archie: I love my baby brother and draw pictures for him.
Bethany:
you can tickle them to make them happy.
Finlay: I give my Granny a big kiss.
Dan: I could make sandcastles for them.
Freya: be nice. It makes them happy. Mum took me to Disney On Ice. I got a special dress.
Riley: we can give them kisses to make them happy. My Mum takes us to the park.
Ben: Grandma gets me toys and lots of sleepovers.
Max: I get lots of cuddles and kisses.
Sophie S.: my Mummy gives me cuddles. I love my Daddy too. I make him pictures of me.
Darcey G.: I give Mummy cuddles.
Theo: we go to the ice hockey together.
Mikey: I love my Mummy. She gives me hugs.

Can I Take Your Order Please?

The Chinese restaurant is now very popular and some are getting right in the spirit of it. It’s lovely to hear the children being so polite to their customers as they take their orders and some of the dishes on offer have sounded very interesting. There have been lots of writing opportunities as the children write down what their customers want. The till is always a popular addition in the role play area and our restaurant till helps to develop the children’s learning about money. We thought these photos of life in the restaurant were too good not to be shared.

Chinese Restaurant

Over the next week or two we will be learning about Chinese New Year. We have begun to talk about what we already know and lots of the children’s comments seemed to centre round food as many have visited local Chinese restaurants. We now have a Chinese restaurant in our role play area in each room and on Friday we tasted some Chinese food. As you can see, some made a good attempt to try using chopsticks while others preferred forks and spoons but most children were confident to try some of the food on offer.

Primary 6 In Nursery

Children from Primary 6 have been coming to Nursery to play with our children since before Christmas and Nursery children have absolutely loved their visits. The older children have learned how to relate to young children and have built good relationships with them to the extent that some are chatting in the garden at school break time even when it’s not a day for visits. It’s also been lovely that we have had some Primary 6 children who have been able to talk to our Polish children in their native language which has added to their experience.
Thank you to all Primary 6 children who are involved in Nursery. We appreciate that you have volunteered to come to play with our children, sometimes in your own break time, and hope that you will continue to visit us. Thank you also to Mrs. Johnston and Miss McAuley for encouraging Primary 6 to take on this important role.
