When the children were caring for their caterpillars, they took the opportunity to create their own caterpillars in the art area and we love the colourful work that they produced. We would like to share a little gallery of their creations. Click then click again on photos to make them bigger.

Hecklegirth Hospital
We had a very busy hospital in the Rainbow Room towards the end of term but there were lots of super doctors and nurses to tend to the sick. Broken arms, sore tummies … you name it, we had it in Nursery but we hope that everyone felt better by the time these kind hospital staff looked after them.
The Royal Family Home
With a growing interest in castles developing recently in the Raindrop Room, the children decided to make their own castle for the role play area. Making a castle can be hard work but they rose to the challenge and worked together as a team to create their walls, a door and a flag. The next stage was to make crowns as everyone wanted to be a king, queen, prince or princess and, as you can see, this was a popular activity. Before we knew it, the role play area was busy with our very own royal family taking turns on the throne and discussing what royalty do all day. The children certainly seemed pleased with the end result of all their hard work.
Butterfly Symmetry
Just like the children in the Rainbow Room, those in the Raindrop Room have been focussing on symmetry and they have made some beautiful, symmetrical butterflies to display in their room. We would like to share a selection here but have a look in the Nursery to see lots more.
Learning About Symmetry
As we have been learning about life cycles and are caring for our caterpillars, we took the opportunity to learn about symmetry which can be seen on the wings of butterflies. The children have been creating symmetrical patterns in the art area and experimenting with playdough to make their own symmetrical patterns. ‘Symmetry’ is a tricky word to remember but the children have certainly shown us that they understand what it is.
Kandinsky Gallery
Some of the children have been learning about the work of the artist Kandinsky. Paint and chalk have been used to create artwork in his style and the children have been amazed and delighted to be able to produce a piece of art that looks similar to that of a famous artist. We hope that enjoy our little Kandinsky gallery. I wonder if the children can find their own work?
Self-Portraits
Just like the children in the Rainbow Room, those in the Raindrop Room spent some time recently creating self-portraits which you may have noticed displayed in the Nursery. Here is a little gallery of some of their work which we hope you enjoy.

What Can You See?
The children in the Rainbow Room have been looking very closely at their faces in the mirror as they talk about what they can see and try to draw their own faces. As part of their close observation, the children decided what colour their eyes were and added a tally mark on the chart to record their findings. They found that, in their room, blue was the most common eye colour. As well as producing great drawings of their faces, we loved some of the children’s comments so would like to share them with you too.
Tiana-Rose: I have two eyes, eyes blink. Our eyes are to see. I have a tongue and teeth inside my mouth. I’ve got baby teeth. You blow noses.
Jackson: I see two eyes, a nose, a mouth, a finger, two eyebrows. I see with my eyes.
Lewis: my eyes are blue on the inside. I’ve added yellow around my eyes as it looks like skin. You close your eyes to sleep. I have two nostrils. Some people have different coloured eyes.
Euan: I eat with my mouth. My tongue is in my mouth. I see with my eyes. I listen with my ears. Look at my big enormous head.
Jake: I’ve got a big head now, a huge head. My eyes are big, mouth, teeth big, my hair’s big … big blue eyes.
Emily M: I’m making a big smiley face. I’ve got brown eyes and another colour in my eyes.
Filip: I’m bigger now … brown eyes … one, two eyes. I’m not sad, I’m happy.
Food Portraits
Our young artists in the Rainbow Room have been looking at the work of the artist Arcimboldo who was famous for creating imaginative portraits made of food amongst other things. The children have shown imagination and creativity to make their own portraits on slate in the style of Arcimboldo and developed their technology skills by taking photos of their work themselves. We loved their artwork and photography so much that we have made a display in the school for everyone to see. Great work children!
Spring Gallery
We seem to have had so many activities to share lately that we are still catching up with a few from last term. This little gallery gives you a feel for the Spring flowers that children in the Raindrop Room created as they began to talk about the changing season.
