“Word of the Week” in the Raindrop Room is ‘seasons’ this week and the children in the Rainbow Room are having ‘Spring’ as their focus. Let’s hope that the weather gives us lots of opportunities to talk about Spring over the next few days.
Fire Station Take Two
As promised, here is a gallery of photos from the Raindrop Room’s visit to the fire station last week. Just as with the Rainbow Room, we were very proud of the good listening and talking from our children as well as their super behaviour. Thank you to everyone who helped to make this a great outing for our children.

Award Winners
We would like to congratulate these recent award winners who should be very proud of their achievements.
Fire Station
As part of learning about jobs in our community, the children had trips out this week to visit the fire station. They got a close up view of the equipment in a fire engine, as well as the fire officer’s uniform, and put their hands to their ears as the blue lights and siren were turned on. Of course, no visit to the fire station is complete without getting an opportunity to sit up in the fire engine and try out the big hose which was great highlight for everyone.
As well as learning about a firefighter’s job, we had a great team teaching the children about road safety through role play. The children showed themselves to be knowledgeable and certainly followed the rules of road safety on the walk to and from the fire station.
Huge thanks go to all the fire team who looked after us and made our visit such fun as well as to the parents who accompanied us – without parent helpers these trips out would not be possible. We hope that you enjoy these photos of the Rainbow Room children and will post photos soon of the Raindrop Room’s visit.
Collaborative Art
As well as individual works of art, the children love to create a collaborative piece of art now and again. We provide the tools and the children work together to produce one big collage or picture. Paint, pens, glitter and collage materials were all available to the children as they worked together to produce their unique creation. It’s lovely to hear them talking together about their picture as they work and the whole creative process seems to have a very calming effect on those joining in. Well done all those who contributed to these creations. One is on display in the school corridor and one in Nursery.
Slime
Leo’s family has been looking at the recent photos of the children making slime:
“Leo loved making the slime and told us all about it.”
It was an activity full of learning and fun which everyone thoroughly enjoyed. Well done Leo for talking about your learning at home.
Slimy Science
One of our recent experiments in the Raindrop Room was to make slime which, as you can imagine, was a very popular activity. We talked about what an experiment is and that we were investigating what would happen if we mixed certain ingredients. Washing up liquid, cornflour, water and food colouring were our starting point and the children enthusiastically followed the instructions for making slime.
There was lots of learning involved as the children measured the correct amounts, mixed them together then discussed if our experiment was successful. They showed good evaluation skills when they realised that their mixture was too watery and they had to provide suggestions of how we could improve it. In the end, as you can see, a second batch of slime was more successful and the children had a fun learning experience. We hope that you like our slimy photos.
Some of their comments were:
Remy: it wasn’t sticky. We put too much water in it.
Leo: it was getting all fuzzy. It had soap, water, corn stuff and the thing we put in playdough (food colouring).
Leah: it feels slimy. It feels really funny.
Emilia B.: don’t add too much water.
Sofia: we made it sticky.
Happy Faces
Oscar and Letti’s family has been looking at the photos from Red Nose Day:
“What a great photo, happy faces all round!”
The children certainly had great fun coming to Nursery in their pyjamas and it was great that we could donate to such a good cause.
Mud Painting And Creativity
We would like to share this little gallery of outdoor play in the Rainbow Room one recent morning. Painting with mud was very popular with some, as the children created artwork using the resources available to them.
Another group decided to make their own hotel using cones, pipes, cable reels and other bits and pieces they found outdoors. In case you are wondering, the watering can on the top of their hotel is the sprinkler to put out fires in the hotel. What a great idea! As always, our children prove themselves to be so creative in their use of resources.

Flower Arranging
It is always important to have a nice environment to enjoy a meal and these children in the Rainbow Room certainly helped to make the snack area more attractive recently when they created some little floral displays for the snack tables. It was great to hear their discussion about which flowers they liked and which to put together in their vases. We think that their flower arranging skills are great and they made everyone’s visit to snack and lunch a much more pleasant experience.
