Spring Is Here

Discussions around the signs of Spring were the stimulus in the art area before the holiday and many of the children have enjoyed creating artwork using their observational skills and imagination. Pens, paint and craft materials were all used to produce these Spring pictures in the Rainbow Room. I wonder if any of the children recognise their own work in our little gallery?

Fun, Exciting And Engaging

Tilly’s family has left us a lovely comment on a photo showing Tilly and her friends exploring the tray of shaving foam:

“This is a fabulous photo! Sums up exactly what nursery should be…fun, exciting and engaging their interests! Lovely to see how happy they all are!”

We love that photo too and, as you can see, the children absolutely love this activity. Thank you for your kind comment.

Measuring Sugar

Just as the children in the Rainbow Room learned about the food triangle and which type of foods help to keep us healthy, those in the Raindrop Room investigated how much sugar was in different types of foods. They found out about checking packaging to check which ingredients are in food and they then measured the amount of sugar there was in each example that they looked at. Once the sugar was on the scales, the children seemed quite surprised at the amount each item had and they were able to compare different foods. Hopefully the children are now beginning to develop an understanding that sugar is not only in sweets as they tended to believe initially.

Happy Photos

Oscar and Letti’s family like our photos of the children looking at the tractor brought in by Fern’s Daddy:

“Oscar was very happy to tell me all about the big New Holland at nursery.”

Everyone certainly seemed to enjoy that visit and we are very grateful to Fern’s Daddy for taking the time to bring it in.

They also enjoyed the photos of the children making chocolate nests:

“Letti enjoyed making herself and Oscar a chocolate nest and she gave Mum have a very small nibble!”

That was kind of you to share Letti. Again, this was a very popular activity. Thank you for taking the time to comment in the holidays.

Healthy Eating

The children in the Rainbow Room looked at the healthy eating triangle to help them understand which foods help us grow and stay healthy and which foods are only to be eaten in moderation. The children were keen to discuss the type of foods they eat and showed an understanding of which foods are healthy.

Jackson: I like corn and carrots. I don’t like broccolis. I like oranges, apples and watermelon. Just a little cake to keep healthy.
Danielle: I like carrot and potato with gravy.
Tom: waffles go in the top triangle. You have a little bit. Your arms will grow up if you eat healthy. You have to keep exercising too. I’m like a cannonball.
Alex: it’s a peapod. The peas are inside it. I love fish chopped up. My Granny showed me how to make pasta. I would cook with a tomato. I’d make tomato sauce.
Aoife: the biscuit goes at the top with the cake. You just have a little. Bread and pasta is healthy. You can eat tomatoes, slice tomatoes and squeeze them to make juice.
Emily: it’s a triangle. You can have lots of strawberries and a little drop sweeties. I like strawberries. You can just have one lollipop.
Tiana-Rose: you must just have one cupcake.
Letti: toast is healthy. I like butter and jam on it.
Primrose: carrots are healthy. I like sweetcorn and bananas.
Nancy: you have to keep drinking and eating to keep your energy up.
Oscar: don’t eat all of the jam. It’s strawberries and sugar. Strawberries are healthy.
Safoora: bananas and oranges are healthy.
Zack: my favourite is apples. They make me stronger.
Arthur: if you eat too much sugar you get sick.
Jessica: I like water, strawberries and grapes.

Fun Learning

A tray of shaving foam provides great opportunities to develop fine motor control as the children experiment, making patterns and trying to write their names. It is also a wonderful sensory experience as they play with the foam and talk about how it feels. Importantly, as with all play, this is a fun learning experience that the children love.

Build A Nest

At the end of term the children in the Rainbow Room were learning about birds building nests and we looked at photos of what they use to build homes for their new chicks. Some children then used a range of materials to create their own little decorative nests to take home for the Easter holiday. As you can see, each nest that was produced was individual and unique to each child. Great work boys and girls – we are sure that they must look lovely in your homes.

Tractor Visit

We had a special treat on the last day of term when Fern’s Daddy, as part of his job, was able to arrange a visit from a huge tractor. Everyone was very excited to sit up high and experience what it must feel like for a farmer to be in charge of a tractor. We were amazed at the size of it especially when we compared ourselves to the height of the wheels. Some were also interested to look at the back of the tractor and talk about what might be attached to the huge hooks.
Thank you so much to Fern’s Daddy for arranging this visit which was a great experience for the children. Thank you also to her Mummy who so kindly helped the children up into the cab. Here are the children from the Raindrop Room having a great time with the tractor. We will post photos of those in the Rainbow Room soon.
