Bethany’s Dragon Travels to Ireland

Bethany’s family seemed to like her Chinese dragon and commented on her photo:

“Bethany made another Dragon for her Grandparents in Ireland. Her Aunty Sarah was so impressed she used it to inspire her Primary School students in her Afterschool Art Club. So those Dragons certainly have travelled far and near.
A big thankyou to all involved, you’re doing a great job!”

It’s great to hear that Bethany is acting as a Hecklegirth Dragon Ambassador. I wonder if Aunty Sarah’s children’s dragons were as good as yours? Keep up the good work Bethany!

Who Do You Love?

With Valentine’s Day on the calendar recently, we have been talking about who we love and how we show that we love someone. As a home activity, the children drew someone they love and told us why they love them. As you can see from the comments below, we had some lovely ideas. All the children’s work is displayed in the corridor. Please take the time to have a look at them all as they will put a smile on your faces.

Jacquie: I love Mummy, Daddy, Arran, Carly and Granny. I love Daddy, Mummy and Granny because they give me cuddles. Arran plays crocodiles. Carly plays with me.

Shay: I love Grandad because he teaches me lots of good things, takes me on a train to special places and is very good to me.

Evie: I love flowers because they have lovely petals. I love Mummy and Leah and Ericka.

Tyler: I love Daddy, Mummy, Cody and Diesel and Nathan. Mummy plays games. Daddy takes me to the park. Cody and Diesel play on the field. Nathan is my cousin and best friend.

Lewis: I love Granny because she likes One Direction and she likes to dance.

Kyle: I love my big brothers Lewis and Jack because they play football outside with me.

Malachi: I love my Mummy and Daddy and Millie because they are my family and they are the best.

Abbi: I love Mummy and Daddy and Granny and the dogs. I love them very much because I like them – they’re my friends. Mummy’s good at cooking. Daddy looks after me and Granny.

Dawid H: I love all my family and Steve ( Nursery’s monkey) because they make me happy and play games with me.

Scott: I love Mummy and Daddy and Grant, Granny, Papa, Granny and Grandad and Hamish. They play with me and give me kisses and cuddles. They take me somewhere special and tuck me up in bed and read me stories.

Julia: I love my Mum and Dad. They take care of me and really love me. They buy me nice toys when I’m a good girl.

Bring and Buy Sale

Recently Nursery morning children were invited to a “Bring and Buy Sale” by P5/4. As you can see, it was a busy and exciting event where there was lots for the children to spend their money on. Some chose toys and books, others preferred the cake stall but most found something they wanted to buy.
It was tricky managing to work out which coins we needed but P5/4 were very patient and helpful with all our children. Thank you to everyone in P5/4 for inviting us to your very well organised event, for your lovely manners and for your kindness and patience with the Nursery children. We would also like to congratulate you on raising over £230 for Guide Dogs for the Blind – you should be very proud of yourselves.

Recent Comments

It’s good to see that you are enjoying our blog at home. We have had two recent comments on our Chinese New Year learning.

Lewis: “I really enjoyed learning about Chinese New Year. I really liked eating my noodles with chopsticks.”

Neve’s Mummy: “Neve has really enjoyed learning all about the Chinese New Year, she has loved coming home showing us her writing of numbers in Chinese. Great topic for the children to learn about. X”

Roxy’s Mum also left her a lovely comment when she was recently awarded a Hecklegirth Star Award:
“Im so proud of my little girl , well done xxx”

Thank you to everyone who takes the time to leave a comment. We really appreciate it.

How Many Ways Can We Use Snow?

What fun we had when the snow arrived yesterday. The children seemed to find so many different ways to enjoy it and many spent nearly the whole session out in the Nursery garden.
They tried to build snow mummies, snow babies and snow dogs but they discovered that the snow was a bit too soft. Some lay down to make snow angels and others were very inventive and used the tyres to make a snow bin where they stored “special snow for special things”. A bucket with a little water in the bottom provided a useful experiment as they tried to work out what was happening when they put snow in and it changed appearance. One group spent ages in a taxi, talking about getting the heating on and hoping that they would get to Carlisle safely as the weather was bad for driving. There were so many wonderful ideas happening everywhere.
It was hard to capture good photos because the children didn’t stay still for long in their excitement but hopefully these will capture some of the moments of our lovely snowy day.

Chinese New Year

Last week we started to learn about Chinese New Year. We were very lucky to have a special visitor who has had first hand experience of the celebrations in China. Mrs. McGhie had everyone enthralled as she told us the story of the big monster and we were very good at using chopsticks and pans to make a loud noise to scare it away as we helped to tell the story.
We learned that that this is the year of the snake and all about the animals race, about lai see envelopes, fireworks, how children learn to use chopsticks, about a celebration feast, the clothes that people wear… we just learned so much. It was all very interesting to find out from someone who has had personal experience and the children loved seeing and handling all the exciting things in Mrs. McGhie’s basket.
After finishing with a dragon dance, we made Chinese food for snack which included a taste of Chinese tea that Mrs. McGhie had brought for us.
What a marvellous way to learn about someone else’s culture and celebrations. Thank you Mrs. McGhie for bringing Chinese New Year to life for the children. You gave us a fantastic learning experience.
