Bethany’s family is impressed with the sunflower pictures:
“What wonderful sunflower pictures! I can’t wait to see the real sunflowers when they grow!”
I wonder if anyone’s sunflower seed has started to sprout yet? We hope that you are remembering how to look after them boys and girls.
To tie in with our Family Learning growing project and work based on our learning about Vincent Van Gogh, the children have been planting sunflowers as well as painting them. Everyone should now have a little pot with their sunflower seed at home and the children should be able to tell their families what they need to do to look after it. Hopefully, they will be able to bring their plants or a photo back to Nursery later in the term to show us how well they are growing.
In the meantime here are some photos and comments from the planting activity.
Ava T: you put a seed in and some compost inside.
Jade: we were planting sunflowers. We give them sunshine and water and I’m caring for mine.
Teigan: we made our own flowers and gave them water.
Conan: it was Vincent Van Gogh who did the sunflowers.
Suzie: you put soil in then you put the seed in then you water it then you take it home.
Josie: when you make plants you need water and seeds.
Lexi: we were making sunflowers. You put soil in then plant a seed. Water makes them grow.
Logan: we were planting flowers. You need sun and water to make them grow.
Carmen’s Mum was impressed with everyone’s sunflowers:
“Aw this is right down Carmen’s street. She just loves drawing pictures of flowers. She loves to pick them too and brings them to me with a smile. How can I refuse, even tho I’ve not got many flowers left in the garden after Carmen’s been. Lovely display of pictures here. Well done boys and girls they look great.”
Carmen does loves flowers. We’ve noticed that too. Well done everyone with your super artwork.
As promised, we have a small selection of the children’s sunflower art inspired by their work on Vincent Van Gogh. As you can see they chose a range of resources in the art and craft area, including actual sunflower seeds, but we think that they all look fantastic. You can see lots more sunflowers on display in both Nursery rooms.

Freya and Tyra are certainly having fun together in Nursery and the playground. Sounds like Freya will be looking forward to Tyra looking after her when she moves to Primary 1.
Vincent Van Gogh is the latest artist that the children have learning about and to get a taste of his work we looked at “Sunflowers” and “Starry Night”. The children talked about what they liked in his paintings and which painting they preferred.
Bethany: I like “Starry Night” best ’cause it has lots of stars on it. It’s funny that it’s a yellow moon – it should be white.
Dan: I like “Sunflowers” best ’cause it’s got nice colours.
Riley: I like the vase in the “Sunflowers”
Kailey: “Starry Night” is best ’cause it’s colourful.
Freya: I like the “Sunflowers” one best ’cause I like sunflowers.
Theo: I like the blue bits in the middle of the sunflowers.
The children also produced their own artwork using Van Gogh’s “Sunflowers” as inspiration. Have a look in Nursery and you can see their super efforts. We will put photos of their art work here soon.
Like us, Carmen’s Mum loved her art work:
“When I saw this picture I was really very impressed. Well done Carmen. It’s proudly displayed in our hallway. Carmen loves flowers. Tom and Carmen were playing in the garden and I saw them putting flowers into a bucket and filling it with water, I asked what they were doing they replied making perfume!”
That’s brought a few memories back from our youth – making perfume with petals in the garden. It was a super picture Carmen and all your own idea to use the sweet wrappers. Well done!
Since the start of term we have been learning about Spring, growth and new life and the children have used a range of materials to produce some beautiful Spring flowers in the art area to brighten up our Nursery walls.
