Bird Watching

One of our families has kindly shared these photos to let us know what they have been doing recently while Nursery is closed. Bird watching was the activity of the day for them on Monday. They have a new bird box in their garden and made their own binoculars, to keep an eye out for any visiting birds, followed by a three and a half mile bike ride.
Thank you so much for sharing your photos. It looks like you are having a great time and keeping fit too. Fingers crossed that some little birds start visiting your garden.

National Superheroes Day

Today, 28th April, is National Superheroes Day and there are certainly plenty superheroes supporting our communities in current difficult times.
Why not discuss with your children who they think are the superheroes in our community? They could choose which superhero they would like to say ‘thank you’ to and make a mask to represent them. They may even have something at home that they could use as a cape? Have fun turning into superheroes everyone.

We’re Going On A Bear Hunt

One of the children’s favourite stories in Nursery is “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt” and if you click on the link below you can see the author Michael Rosen reading the story which we feel sure the children will thoroughly enjoy. Ask if they can remember the special word for the person who writes a story as we have talked a lot about the term ‘author’ as well as ‘title’ and ‘illustrator.

This is such a brilliant book to read over and over again and Michael Rosen’s voice and facial expressions are brilliant. The repetition helps children to recall the story and retell it themselves. See if they can join in with the story and actions as many of them love to do this in Nursery.

Ask them what they think happened to the bear and how they think he was feeling at the end of the story. Who does he live with or does he live alone? What will he eat for his tea? Maybe they could make a cave for their own teddy bear using an old cereal box or using material, such as towels, under a chair or a table?

Well Done Fern!

Fern’s family has been in touch after seeing Mr. Palmer’s bike art competition:

“This is a fun idea, Fern will love taking part. Fern has used some of her time at home to learn how to ride her bike without stabilisers!!”

Wow! Well done Fern learning to ride without stabilisers. We are all very proud of you and we are looking forward to seeing a photo of your bike art later in the week.

We hope that lots of our families will take part and send their photos to the school address gw08officehecklegirt@ea.dumgal.sch.uk or to Mr. Palmer’s address gw08palmerchris@ea.dumgal.sch.uk by Friday May 1st.

Bike Art Competition

We have a message below for Mr. Palmer who is setting you a challenge. We are looking forward to seeing what you all do. Have fun!

Morning everyone.

This would normally be the Big Pedal fortnight if we were at school and nursery. The playground would start to fill up with bikes and scooters with more of you travelling to nursery that way. We would have a ‘Skills day’ with Annan Cycling Club and Katie and a Cycling breakfast too. I hope many of you are still managing to get out on your bike and scooter, either in the garden or out on family bike rides.

As we can’t be at nursery for the Big Pedal we are going to have a cycling related competition from home instead this week. The challenge if you want to take part is to create your own ‘Bike Art’. You can use any materials from your home (ask a parent/carer to help you) to design your own special bike.

To help you with ideas go to the following link:

Indoor Ideas

You will see Katie, our local Ibike officer for Dumfries and Galloway explaining how to make Bike Art.

Please send your competition entry in as a picture to the school office on gw08officehecklegirt@ea.dumgal.sch.uk or email me on gw08palmerchris@ea.dumgal.sch.uk by Friday 1st May.

I’m looking forward to seeing all your finished entries. There will be a winner and runner up prize for Nursery-P1, P2-P4 and P5-7. Katie has kindly donated some t-shirts and water bottles for prizes.

There are plenty of other bike related ideas that we can do at home on https://ibike.sustrans.org.uk/indoor-ideas/ and they change each week so go and have a look.

Have a good week everyone.

Mr Palmer

News From Isaac

Isaac W’s family has been looking at our recent posts and kindly left us some comments.

They enjoyed the video of Mrs. Irving and her son playing Humpty Dumpty:
“We have just watched this, Isaac said it sounds good. xx”
We are certainly looking forward to Mrs. Irving bringing her accordion in to Nursery in the future. Glad you enjoyed it Isaac.

They liked the photo of Isaac when the buddies visited us:
“Excellent picture, Isaac looks happy. xx”
The Nursery children did love those visits. Let’s hope we can enjoy them again in the not too distant future.

It was also great to hear that Isaac is looking after his plants:
“Isaac has been taking great care of our plants and he has been happily watering them every day as we are having such nice weather. Next project is a fairy garden…..we will send some pictures. Isaac is most definitely missing his Nursery family.”

Well done Isaac! We are all missing you too. A fairy garden sounds wonderful.

Please send any photos to the school address gw08officehecklegirt@ea.dumgal.sch.uk and they will be forwarded to us to put on the blog.

Thank you for taking the time to leave us message. It’s so nice to hear from you.

Stay At Home Ideas

The World Book Day website has a “Stay At Home Ideas” section that provides fun ideas, craft activities, and free book resources that families can enjoy together.

It’s a great opportunity to share stories and enjoy the magic of books, including free audiobooks and storybook videos such as a lovely selection from Julia Donaldson’s “Tales From Acorn Wood” series. They hope that you’ll find something to inspire all ages from mini bookworms to older readers and they plan to update their page over the coming weeks with new ideas to keep everyone engaged and busy.

Can You Make A Rainbow?

Lots of families have been drawing beautiful rainbows and displaying them in their windows, just like we did in Nursery on our last day.
Why not make a rainbow in a different way? You could collect stones from your garden or on a family walk then colour them using paint or pens in lots of different colours and make your own rainbow in the garden using your decorated stones. You could make an arc of colours or pile them up to make a rainbow stack? That would look so bright and beautiful, it would make everyone feel happy when they saw it.
I wonder how many stones you would need to make a rainbow? Have a count once your rainbow is made and see how many you used. Have a think about if you used the same number of each colour.
