Rain, Rain, Stay In Nursery

Which child doesn’t enjoy the opportunity to jump in a puddle? Well, we certainly had a big enough puddle for lots of jumping this week in Nursery when our garden area became waterlogged. As well as a mini pond in our mud kitchen, we had water stretched from one end of the pathway to another. It certainly brought home to children that winter weather is not all about Jack Frost and snow.
We had ducks and boats out which produced some valuable discussions about floating and sinking as well as lots of pouring and measuring to develop numeracy skills. The children worked so well together and enjoyed investigating their ideas in a real context. Great fun was had, for example, experimenting to see if a boat would sink if they filled it with water.
It may have been a little inconvenient for adults to use a different entrance to Nursery but the children took full advantage of conditions that were very exciting for them.

Super Snowmen

We have been so delighted to see all the wonderful snowmen that you boys and girls have done as a home activity. Not only have you managed to design your snowmen and put them in order of size, as we suggested, but some of you have even added your own writing which is fantastic. Well done everyone who has taken part in this activity. We love your work.

Learning About Winter

It sounds like Carmen is enjoying learning about winter as her Mum commented:

“Carmen is enjoying the winter topic. She loved designing her snowmen at home. She says it great fun. When we are about to set off for nursery in the morning I ask her what’s the weather like today Carmen and she tells me. When she saw the floods on the TV Carmen sayed to me ” mummy I wish I could help those people” I said and how would you help them Carmen she sayed ” mummy they could all come and stay at ours and have a sleepover until there house has dried up”. Aw how cute! So she understands how the bad weather affects people and that she cares!”

How kind of Carmen to think of others. We did talk about the floods and were pleasantly surprised by how much the children understood about them. We have also enjoyed seeing all the different snowmen arriving in Nursery and will hopefully put a few photos on the blog soon.

Settling In

After the first week of term, our new children are beginning to settle in to Nursery life. They are learning where everything is, are becoming familiar with the routines and are enjoying trying out a range of activities, as you can see from our photos. We hope that our new families enjoy using our blog to get a feel for life in Hecklegirth Nursery. If you have not yet returned our permission form and would like to appear on the blog, please bring your form to Nursery next week.

Christmas Comments

Some of our families have been looking at the photos of our Christmas parties:

“It was lovely that we were invited to see Santa deliver the presents. Sophie loved her book, we often borrow it from the Library so its nice to have our own copy now, thank you very much!”

“Charlie had a great day! I don’t think he suspected Santa! Haha xxx”

We hope that everyone enjoyed their day.

How Do We Know It’s Winter?

Our learning at the start of this term is focussed on the signs of winter and how it affects our lives. As a starting point we have been talking about how we know it’s winter. This has also encouraged the children to think about the recent flooding that has featured on the news and which some have experienced in Annan. We would like to share some of the children’s ideas about winter.

Carmen: it’s winter ’cause it’s colder and the grass turns in to snow. The trees have lost their leaves because the snow’s too strong to make them stay on.
Roxy: it’s winter because we’re learning about it. It’s cold and sometimes it’s snowing and we get Jack Frost.
Deryn: the pond gets frozen and you can skate on it.
Tom: it’s cold and we need hats and gloves.
Reagyn: Jack Frost makes ice. He normally comes to life and if water’s there he makes it alive.
Lexi: you get nice and warm in a jacket ’cause it’s winter.
Rebecca: you need gloves and a scarf when it’s winter.
Fearne: you need coats ’cause it’s cold.
Jade: I like winter ’cause it’s snow. The snow falls all down.
Jessica W: you get wind and rain too in winter.
Logan: there was a big flood at the harbour and a ball went swimming in it.
Conan: you need to rescue people when it’s all flooding.
William: a flood is very high water that goes up in the clouds after a while.

School Enrolment

We would like to remind you that enrolment for pupils due to start Primary 1 in August 2014 will be on Tuesday 14th and Wednesday 15th January 2014 between 2.00 and 3.30p.m. at your child’s catchment school. If you wish your child to attend a school other than his/her catchment school, there is an option to make this request on the enrolment form.
When enrolling their child, parents should bring with them their son/daughter’s birth certificate and proof of address, e.g. a utility bill or bank statement.

Well Done Lewis

Those of you who were in Nursery last year will hopefully remember the carrots that you planted. Lewis obviously looked after his crop well as his family has left us this message:

“Lewis and I have just been harvested the carrots which we planted in March. What a lot of lovely carrots of all shapes and sizes. We are going to try them tomorrow at our second Christmas dinner now that Grandad is home from work at last.”

We hope that you all enjoy your second Christmas dinner especially those tasty carrots. Well done for looking after them so well.

Back To Nursery

Our new term starts on Monday 6th January when we look forward to seeing everyone again. We will also be meeting lots of new children and feel sure that you will make them feel welcome in our Nursery. They will be excited to be starting Nursery and looking forward to making new friends so we hope that this is the beginning of a happy experience for them.

We have made a slight change to our staffing arrangements this term. Mrs. Kirkpatrick will now be based in the Sunshine Room every afternoon although she and Mrs. Carruthers will continue to do alternate weeks in each room in the mornings. Miss Awde will return to the Rainbow Room this term and is looking forward to working closely with the Rainbow children again.

We hope that you enjoy the rest of your holiday and look forward to seeing you all on Monday.
