Dalbeattie Primary History Day

Dalbeattie Primary School turned back time on the 28th January when pupils and staff dressed up in old fashioned clothes for a themed day with a focus on the school’s history. Not only did pupils come to school in outfits typical of the period in which the school opened but they also: took part in a ‘history detectives’ trail outdoors to look for clues for how the buildings had changed over the years; took part in a Victorian clothes and toys handling workshop with costumes kindly loaned by Dumfries Museum; took part in old fashioned playground games such as marbles, hopscotch and used gird n cleeks, kindly loaned by the Catstrand in New Galloway; watched and discussed a powerpoint of the school’s history made from photos supplied by Dalbeattie Museum; and watched a clip of the school in 1901 which one parent found on the BFI website. The children were amazed by this – quite a find! There were also special visitors: Donald and Tommy Henderson from Dalbeattie Museum came in clothes of the period and were equipped with a teacher’s abacus and old fashioned toys; Dumfries Museum’s Fiona Wilson gave a hand to children trying on outfits. The school is also grateful to Dalbeattie High School for lending extra dressing up items for the day. And there’s more…in the weeks to come, retired Head Teacher Norman Kennedy will also be visiting classes to lead talks on the school in days gone by.

Childline Presenatation for P6 and 7

On Thursday the 16th of January P6 and 7  had a visit from Tony who works with Childline. He gave  a talk about different forms of abuse, including bullying, recognising the signs of abuse and knowing where to get help.

The children were all very engaged and know that all children have a right to feel happy and safe.

Each class then took part in a more detailed workshop and looked at Guy’s experiences.  They learned how important it is to seek help and know different sources of support. They also created  “Buddy” kits.

“We all have the right to be happy and safe!”

M&M Dick Whittington

Did Dalbeattie Primary enjoy Dick Whittington-‘Oh yes we did!’ As usual we were amazed at the vitality and enthusiasm of this brilliant theatre group and marvelled at how only four people can play a cast of so many more! We booed evil Captain Hawkeye, we laughed at his sidekick Spew[?], we sighed at the romance between Alice and Dick but most of all we absolutely adored Tommy the cat especially when he climbed up the wall bars!! Thank you M & M.

Dalbeattie New Clinic posters

There were three very pleased children at Dalbeattie Primary School when they received vouchers from the Hub’s Audrey Christie for their super entries in a competition to design a poster in connection with the construction of a new clinic in Dalbeattie. Project manager David Roan, Construction Manager from Ashleigh for the new site, who recently welcomed pupils from the school’s council to bury a time capsule in the foundations of the clinic site, invited the young people to draw a poster about site safety and the importance of being considerate constructors. Orla, Holly and Brooke won vouchers for the Dalbeattie book shop. David Roan said he was delighted to recive 50 posters and a selection will be displayed on a special notice board. The school will also be delighted to receive a new set of football strips from Ashleigh Construction in the new year.

The school concert!

This year’s concert was another resounding success. We were able to showcase all the wonderful talent we have here at Dalbeattie Primary. Not only did we perform a super variety of festive songs but we also had performances from a range of musical instruments. Our P7s entertained us with a very good play about the hardships that Santa and his elves had to endure during WW2.However all ended well in the best pantomine tradition. The whole show was a chance for parents and friends to be proud of all our pupils.

Time Capsule

Mrs Howie and the School councillors took our time capsule to be buried on the site of the Primary Care Centre for Dalbeattie Clinic, it was a very proud moment, notice we are all wearing our safety

helmets. Some of the things we put in were photos of up to date  ICT equipment, class in a box, camera and photos of ourselves.

It was Tom and Ben who had the honour of burying it.

I wonder who will find it and when?

P5s are Powerwise

Pupils in Primary 3 – 5 attended a special presentation from Power Wise (SP Energy Networks) all about ‘Being Safe with Electricity’. Our visitor provided a huge amount of interesting information in a very entertaining manner. He reinforced important safety information when using electricity at home, in school and in the wider community. He was most impressed with the knowledge shown by our Primary 5 pupils who have recently completed work on electrical circuits and electrical safety.
