World Book Day

In Primary 1/2 we spent plenty of time sharing our books as part of World Book Day. The children loved being able to read their books with their friends.

ICT in P5

I.C.T
We have brand new netbooks in school – YIPPEE!! They can be used as touch screen or laptop form. Mrs Donley has been teaching us how to use the netbooks and access different resources. We have been learning how to access our emails, how to use Microsoft Word and will be moving on to creating documents and sending them as attachments in emails. This week we were learning all about the different things we can do on Microsoft Word including:
  1. Fonts
  2. Colour
  3. Size
  4. Pictures
  5. Spell Check
  6. Thesaurus

K’Nex Challenge

Knex Challenge
This week P5 have been involved in Creating Engineers Challenge 2023. This challenge is set by the University of Glasgow and has different heats. The first heat was in the classroom and set by Mrs Donley. Whoever wins this round goes to Minnigaff Primary School to compete against other schools across Dumfries and Galloway.
This challenge involved us working in teams of 2 to create a bridge. Our bridge was to span across 2 desks, support the weight of a small water bottle and be able to open to allow any size of boat through.
We had specifications to follow:
  • be at least 19cm high
  • be at least 30m long
  • have a strong robust structure
We worked in twos to design out structure and build it using Knex. We only had an hour to complete our challenge. As you can see from our designs, we worked really hard on this challenge and had lots of fantastic ideas.

Maths games

Today some of the Primary 2 children have been practising their maths skills by playing subtraction games. They worked brilliantly in pairs and threes to play the game, checking each others answers and making sure their calculations were accurate!

Primary 3 – 4 Business Enterprise Learning

We are working in design groups to make and design a soap product. We are collating our ideas using a design board before deciding on our final product. We have used ICT, printing techniques, oil pastels, water colours and paper with different textures to include on our design boards.

Golf

We are very lucky that we are having golf sessions from a PGA professional! The sessions are happening on Friday mornings and all the children from Primary 1 – 7 are getting the chance to take part. We had our first session last week and it was brilliant!

Primary 1 -2 Jam survey

This week Primary 1 -2 have been carrying out some market research as part of our jam project. We started off by creating a survey then we went and asked the children in Primary 3-4, Primary 5 and Primary 6-7 which was their favourite flavour. We used a tally to keep track of everyone’s votes. We found out that Strawberry was the most popular flavour of jam across the school.

Primary 3-4: Work on forces

This week we have been learning about balanced and unbalanced forces. The pupils had to demonstrate balanced and unbalanced forces using materials we could find around the classroom. They then drew and labelled diagrams to explain how objects move when the force is unbalanced.

P5 – Gymnastics and Health and Wellbeing

Gymnastics:
This term P5 are learning about Gymnastics. In previous weeks we have been learning about balances. This week we focussed on jumps. We performed a variety of jumps including:
-Tuck Jumps
-Straight Jumps
-Star Jumps
-Half Turn Jumps
We also practised our balances. Some of these are performed on mats and others on benches. Some of our balances include:
-Arabesque
-Tuck Balance
-Dish Balance
-Arch Balance
Health and Wellbeing
For HWB this term, P5 are focussing on managing our emotions and concentrating on our wellbeing. We discovered in a study that if you start your day with a positive thought, you will continue to have a positive day. As a result, we researched ‘Positive Affirmations’. It is important that we share our positive affirmations with others in the school to ensure we all have positive thoughts on our way into school. We decided to create positive posters to display on our playground fence.
Make sure you have a read when you enter the playground and start your day right!
