Visit from Commonwealth judo winner Louise Renicks

After a few months of fundraising, last Friday we were visited by judo athlete Louise Renicks. Louise and her teammate “Scooby” gave each class a 15-minute training session in the gym hall. She showed us her medal from the Commonwealth Games andĀ also signed autographs for the whole school! She spoke to all of us about the importance of nutrition and exercise. We had a wonderful day of activities! Thanks to Louise for coming in and showing us that impossible is nothing. Work hard and you can achieve your dreams!

Getting fitter by the week!

In PE this term we’ve been working really hard on our fitness, stamina and strength. Each week, we’ve completed a circuit with six different exercises such as the shuttle run, sit ups and star jumps. We’ve been giving it our all trying to reach our personal bests and by trying to beat our scores every week.

Music in the classroom!

This term, we’ve been trying to get a little more music into our classroom. We all agree that music can help with our mood: it can give us a burst of energy, it can calm us down, it can inspire! In other words, music can help us learn!

With that in mind, we decided that each day we would play a different genre or type of music. This music would be played at different parts of the day (for example, afterĀ lunchtime)Ā toĀ help us with our learning. As a big music-lover, I personally feel that having all these different genres can help expose us to music we’ve never heard before! I’ve included some examples below to give you all a taste!

We decided, then, that:

Monday would be Jazz (my personal favourite! Jazz can be energetic and calming.)

Tuesday would be Rock (U2, Thin LizzyĀ and the Cranberries only :p )

Wednesday would be Soul/funk (we’ve found that this upbeat music helps for our discussions)

Thursday would be Classical (this is fantastic for individual work and for helping us calm down after playtime/lunchtime)

Friday would be the children’s choice šŸ™‚

Greek vases artwork

As part of our Inter-Disciplinary Learning (IDL) this term, we’ve been learning all about Greece.

We looked at how the Ancient Greeks lived. When the Ancient Greeks wanted to record or remember some important event, they designed vases which told a story.

Many of these stories were about war and about sport (the Greeks invented the Olympics after all!)

We decided to make our own vases using brown packing paper, card, gluesticks and black marker. We drew our own vases and then got to work!

We designed our vases using Greek patterns and we drew our own story in the middle of theĀ vase.
