McManus trip and tour around our City of Discovery!

Today we visited McManus galleries and took part in a creative learning workshop.  We visited two different exhibitions based on Dundee past and present.  We made sketches of artefacts and things of interest in the galleries.  It was great to finally see some of the history of Dundee as we have been talking and learning so much about this, this term.  We then used our sketches to create print block.  We etched a sketch into a print block, then rolled the block with ink and printed it onto a group sheet.  This was great fun! The finished prints showed all the different things we had looked at in the galleries relating to Dundee.  We then took a little trip over to the D.C. Thomson building where we show lots of thing relating to the journalism industry in Dundee.  We also had our picture taken with 3 Oor Wullies.  We then walked around the Houf- the oldest cemetery in Scotland. Next we walked to the city square where we ate our lunch, looked at the fountains and the Caird Hall.  We learnt about James Caird who built the hall in 1914.  From there we went to see the Dandy and Mini the Minx statues and finally the penguins outside the city churches.  It was a fun-packed day, where we learnt lots about our city, saw important and significant landmarks (even the Law hill, Tay Rail Bridge, Discovery, V7A and Slessor gardens from the bus) but the best bit was seeing 6 Oor Wullies!

Place value

This term during maths we have been developing our mental skills and written skills linked to place value. We have been ordering numbers, finding number more or less than and also making numbers with 4 digits. We have really enjoying playing lots of games and completing activities linked to developing our skills. We have played a games where we each have a number then have to make the biggest or smallest number using 4 digits. We decided to name the game place value people.

Basketball 🏀

This term we have been focusing on skill development in basketball during PE lessons. We have been learning the rules of the game and working on working as part of a team. Our skills have developed in passing, dribbling, catching and shooting with the ball. The whole class have enjoyed working on drills to develop these skills but also enjoyed team games.

Oor Wullie in Scots

Today we were investigating what one of the three J’s are linked to Dundee. We were looking at journalism and the impact DC Thomson has on Dundee. We looked at who Oor Wullie is and how big of a figure he is, the type of things he gets up to and the Scots language he uses. In cooperative learning groups we discussed Scots words for different parts of the body them attached them to Oor Wullie. We are going to continue to look at Oor Wullie over next few weeks and also the other two J’s linked to Dundee.

Sumdog in ICT

During ICT time we have been using our maths skills by playing games on Sumdog. We have been taking part in challenges and having a class contest to see who comes out on top! Next week Mrs Brankin is setting a homework challenge on Sumdog so please use your logins at home to complete the challenge next week. We are really enjoying playing the games and are so enthusiast to answer the maths questions.
