Primary 2 – Visit to HMS Unicorn

As part of our learning about shipbuilding we visited HMS Unicorn.

Although it wasn’t built in Dundee, it was built in a similar way to those built here. It has spent most of its life in Dundee.

It doesn’t have any sails as it has been used a s a training ship. If it had, it would have looked like this:

We saw the Unicorn figurehead:

And heard a ship’s bell:

We saw the captain’s room:

Learned about firing cannons:

Learned about all the things you might find below deck:

And we learned about how rocky it might have been:

Primary 2 – Tay whale

Last week we were learning more about whaling in Dundee. We learned about the Tay Whale and Andrew went to learn more about it in a book. When he couldn’t find any information , he researched it on the internet and found it was 40 foot long. Mrs Taylor told him that a f ruler is a foot long and suggested he might like to measure the length in the corridor.

Mason helped him , but as we only have 33 rulers they soon ran out . They calculated that they would need another 7 rulers and borrowed these from P3 to finish their measuring.

It was fun to use our learning across the curriculum and we were all amazed at how long the whale was!

Today we saw the Tay whale at the Mc Manus galleries. It really is huge!

Primary 2 – a giant counting frame

We were very excited to receive a new tool to help with our learning. We made suggestions as to how it may help us learn.

We suggested counting in 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s. We can use it to add and take away. We could use it for the 2 times table and even to measure height! We are really enjoying using it to learn more about number and maths.
