100 Days of School!

We have been celebrating this week in P1, we have now been at school for 100 days!

Our 100 day anniversary was on Wednesday but we began preparing for our celebrations earlier on in the week.

We made our party hats. We decorated bands of paper and cut out a “100” and stuck it on to the middle of the band. We then curled strips of paper and glued them on to the sides of our hats so it looked like we had multi coloured hair! We also decorated “100” style specs. We looked really cool with all our “100” head gear on.

We thought it would be a good idea to include the rest of the school in our celebrations, so we made marshmallow top hats, chocolate rice krispie cakes and iced biscuits and sold them to all the boys and girls at break time. They sold very well indeed and we managed to raise money for school funds at the same time!

On the day of our celebration itself we were very excited. We counted in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. We put our “10’s” lily pads in order from0 all the way to 100. We made 10 groups of 10 coloured cubes.

We painted 100 dots on our 100 picture. We had cakes in the shape of 100 (which we all ate later! Yum!) We had 100 candles in the shape of 100. No celebration would be complete without candles!

We jumped 100 jumps. We hopped 100 hops. We threw a beanbag 100 times and we ran 100 metres! What an exhausting day!

We also continued to look at our topic  generations. We looked at some old toys. Toys that maybe our grannies or great grannies and granddads might have played with. We looked at how they worked and we also got a chance to play with them.

P1C went to visit local pensioners at Servite housing. We asked them questions about the toys and games they played when they were children. One of the ladies showed us coins we had never seen before. They were coins that were in use when she was a little girl. We played some board games with the ladies and we had a lovely afternoon. P1A and P1B will also be visiting over the next few weeks.

We revisited and revised all our sounds this week and we were also writing words that our teacher said out loud to see if we could sound out and then write the word. We also have sentence cards. We read the sentence and drew a matching picture to show we understood what the sentence said then copied the sentence into our jotter.

We continued working on money this week and we matched cards of coins and to real coins. We had objects for sale in our shop and we had to find the correct coins to match the price tag, just like a real life shop.

Past, Present and Future

Welcome back to a still very snowy Dundee! It’s been snowing all day here and we went outside with our P7 boys and girls into our playground to build snowmen. Have a look at our playground, do you have as much snow where you live? Maybe you can let us know.

We have been reading the book, Room on the Broom and we were looking at all sorts of different characters we could sit on the broom. We each drew a character and wrote some words to describe it. We then added our own character into the rhyme, e.g.,

“I am a giraffe as tall as can be.

Is there room on the broom for a giraffe like me?”

Have a look at some of our “Room on the Broom” rhymes.

In number this week we continued to look at addition adding 1 more and 2 more. We had to work out tricky sums where the missing number was in the middle.  4+[]=5. This made us think very hard!

We also looked at money this week. We looked at all the different coins. We compared their size, their shape and their colour. We looked at how much thery were worth and we arranged them in order.

In topic this week we looked at our needs and our wants, what that meant and the difference between them. We worked in groups and we were all given a selection of picture cards. We had to decide which of the things we needed and which of the things we wanted. Items that made us healthy and were essential to survive were things we needed. Items that were lovely to have but not essential were things we wanted. This was quite tricky and we had to think long and hard if we really needed some things.

We have been talking about how we grow and to help us discuss and understand what a baby needs to thrive and grow strong, Mr Bluman’s wife Anna brought in their baby son Jackson. We had already thought of some interesting questions to ask Anna.

We also have a past, present and future wall in our corridor. We all brought in photos of ourselves as babies. Next to that we have a picture of ourselves as we are now and we then drew a picture of how we think we will look in the future when we are adults. Some of us thought we might be a mummy or a daddy. Some of us thought we might be a fireman or a policeman, and some of us thought we might be a dancer on the stage with purple hair. Who knows what we will be, but it’s exciting to think about our future!

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow….

Welcome to a very wintery and snowy Dundee! Is it snowing where you are? Maybe you could let us know if you’ve had snow as well?!

We were looking at rhyme this week. We were matching picture cards, listening to stories and trying to predict the rhyme. We also listened to nonsense rhymes which made us giggle….a lot! We then had to try and think of our own rhymes. This was really quite tricky!

We are continuing to use all our sounds knowledge to make words and we’re trying to make more tricky words using our phonics cubes.

We continued with addition this week adding on 1 more, 2 more and 3 more.

We have been learning about our bodies and looking at human growth. That just means we’re looking at how we’ve changed. We have brought in photographs of ourselves as babies and we have been discussing the changes our bodies have made and how different we now look. We will be learning about the changes our bodies will make as we grow and get older.

We have our baby clinic in P1A classroom and a G.P. came to visit and talked to us about a real baby clinic. He told us how to hold a baby, to protect its head, and that the clinic would weigh and measure the baby and check its heart, lungs etc. We got to listen to our own hearts.

We have been practising our cutting skills in the afternoon, because the more you practise the better you get! This week we were cutting out the shape of a body and then cutting out winter clothes to put on it. This was an extremely tricky job! One or two of us accidently cut off legs and arms but we were able to save them thanks to sticky tape! We needed lots of concentration for this job!

P1C painted their photo frames this week. If you remember, last week we stuck scrunched up tissue paper onto our frames and left them to dry. They are looking lovely and golden and shiney. We’ve just to put our pictures in them.

We were balancing in gym this week. Balancing is quite tricky and you need to concentrate. We balanced on our own and sometimes we worked as a team.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year everyone and welcome back to our first blog of 2013!

This week we have been doing a lot of  revising  as we can sometimes forget things when we are away from school and having fun on holiday.

We have gone over all our sounds and tricky words this week and played lots of games and activities to refresh our memories!

We also talked about the lovely and exciting things we got for our Christmas. We wrote a sentence to  tell each other about our favourite gift.

We revised all our numbers and practised counting and addition. We also played lots of number games to get our brains working!

In P1C we were making picture frames to go into our new home corner. We scrunched up lots of tissue paper and dipped them in a glue solution and stuck them onto our frames. We then had to press them down firmly so they were close together and no white parts of the card frame was showing. When the glue is dry and the tissue paper has hardened, we are going to paint them and then put our photographs in them so we can hang them in our new home corner.

In P1A our home corner will be a baby clinic and we made  flip charts with our teacher of  all the things we already knew about clinics and all the things we think should be in our baby clinic. In  P1 B we made a  mind map to discuss all the things we are going to need for our home corner. Our home corner is going to be a toy shop and we also drew  pictures of the things that we thought should go into our shop

In gym this week we were practising controlling our bodies. We were balancing, making diffierent shapes and doing pencil rolls. As you can see we were really concentrating hard and thinking about how our body moves.

Merry Christmas Everyone!

Welcome back to P1’s last blog of 2012! Can you believe that? Where has this year gone?!

We have been doing lots of ‘Christmassy’ things this week.

We wrote our letters to Santa. We had to ask very politely for something we would really like to find in our stocking on Christmas morning. We also had to write in our best hand writing. Santa really likes neat hand writing!

We had our Christmas party on Monday. We did some dancing, played musical bumps, the Christmas 4 corners game and instead of pass the parcel we played pass the santa hat!

We went into the dinner hall for our party food and we used the place mats we had made earlier.

After our food we did the hokey cokey and sang some songs. Whilst we were singing we heard a bell. You’re not going to believe it but it was Santa!! He had brought gifts for every boy and girl in P1! It was very exciting!

We also made our Christmas cards to take home to our family and friends. The classes did different versions of Christmas tree cards.

This week we also went to visit Santa’s Grotto at our local community centre. It was beautifully decorated and we all sang songs and Mr Bluman read us a Christmas story. We went to visit Santa and he gave us all a selection box. Wasn’t that very kind?

P5/6 and P6 had a Victorian Christmas exhibition in the hall and we were very kindly invited. We learned lots of things that the Victorians did to celebrate Christmas. We made some paper chains, Christmas crackers, Christmas stockings and we decorated a victorian house. They also told us that in victorian times children got an orange and a coin in their stocking, if they were lucky. We’re hoping Santa brings us a little more than that!

Lastly this week we had our Christmas sing a long. We have been practising all our songs for weeks and we finally got to perform. We had our first performance to the whole school in the morning then again to our parents/carers in the afternoon. Every one agreed we did very well and all those weeks of learning all the words was worth it!

P1a, P1b, P1c, Miss Donaldson, Miss Bonnar, Mr Bluman and Mrs Lynch would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and we hope that you continue to follow our progress in the New Year.

See you in 2013!!

He’s making a list, checking it twice, gonna find out who’s naughty or nice…….

Hello and welcome back to Longhaugh Primary 1’s blog!

Only 10 more sleeps until Chrismas Day!

We continued to look at the medial vowel this week. This week it was the turn of the vowels ‘e’, ‘i’, and ‘o’.

In number we were doing some symmetry work, Christmas themed, of course! Have a look at some of our symmetrical trees below.

Our P1 Christmas party is on Monday the 17th of December. No party is complete without a party hat. We made ours this week cutting out our own shape from the paper and decorating it with lots of jewels, feathers, gold paper etc. We think we’ll be very festive.

We also made place mats for our party. We coloured them in using our own choice of colours and our own design.

On Friday we had a very exciting Glow meet with Santa! Yes! Can you believe it? Santa! He visited Stonehouse Primary School in South Lanarkshire and lots of primary schools all over the country watched and listened to his visit. The boys and girls asked him some very interesting questions. We wondered if he already knew if we were on the naughty or nice list……

We also had a craft afternoon. Our parent/carers and adults that live with us came into school and we worked together with them on our craft activities. It was a great success!

Baubles….Bangles…and Beads

We’ve been busy this week and it will only get busier in the run up to Christmas.

We have been working on CVC words this week looking at the middle vowel ‘a’ and ‘e‘. We have been given words where the vowel is missing and have to think of the correct vowel to make the word. We’ve been doing very well with this job.

We also wrote a sentence about our silly hat sponsored walk. We drew a picture and wrote a sentence about our favourite part.

In number we have been playing number games using our dice. We have also been playing Christmas adding games using crackers and Christmas trees.

Our school Christmas Fayre is on Saturday the 8th December and we’ve been making things to sell and also painting a display. In our Assembly Hall all the classes painted a display of their favourite Winter/Christmas story. We chose a Percy the Park Keeper story but painted him wearing a festive Santa hat!

We also made beaded bracelets. This was quite a tricky job as we had to carefully thread the beads onto the elastic making sure we put the beads on in a pattern and also checking that they didn’t fall off the other end before we tied a knot in the elastic!

We are also going to be selling picture frames with our picture in them. We painted our frames using bright colours and decorated them with sequins.

Donald……Whar’s yer Troosers??

This week have have continued to recap all our sounds and tricky words every day. We have also been doing sounds activities, practising blending and making CVC words.

We have also been sentence building. We have been writing simple sentences about ourselves using our name and our age and sentences using the tricky words we’ve been learning.

We have continued to work on addition this week using the adding circles, the ladybirds and writing our sums on our white boards.

We had our sponsored walk this week. We walked around our local area looking for any signs of Autumn and any other signs we could spot that told us the weather and seasons were changing. Although is was a lovely, bright day it was very cold so we certainly knew the weather had changed to the beginning of Winter!

Not only were we getting sponsored for our walk but we were all wearing silly hats!! We had a ‘hat parade’ before we left school and Mr Munro chose first, second and third place!

Well done to the winners!

This week is Scottish Book Week. We painted characters from books we enjoy and put them in our library area.

We also got a book bag from our local library when we visited for our story time. We are very lucky indeed and on Friday the whole school dressed up as a character from a book!

The P7’s came into our classes to help us celebrate Scottish Book Week. They read us stories and we even read some of our little stories to them!

The 30th of November is St Andrew’s Day. St Andrew is Scotland’s patron saint and in celebration of this we held a party at school. All the P1’s, P2’s and P3’s  joined in. We watched a power point which showed us lots of things about Scotland and why is is a very special country. P3 performed their dance from their Katie Morag topic. Then there was a special treat from Andromeda who is in P7. She goes to highland dancing and she performed 2 highland dances for us.

Then we sang some Scottish songs we had been learning, this included Ye Cannie Shove Yer Granny aff a Bus and Donald Whar’s Yer Troosers.

We played the 4 corners game (Scottish style) and we played Scottish jig jumps. This is our St Andrew’s Day version of musical bumps to Scottish music!

We then went back to our class for a well deserved piece of short bread and a glass of Irn Bru!

What’s the temperature today? P1 will tell you!

Hello there and welcome back to our blog!

We continue to revise our sounds every day, just so we don’t forget any of them. We have been going over our tricky words and using our tricky words to make sentences. We practised writing our sounds and our sentences  making sure we were using our best handwriting.

We were also working on consonant blends. These can be quite tricky and we have been playing some matching games to help us.

We have been looking at the number stories of 4, 5, 6 and 7 this week. We have also been working on our adding sums using our adding circles. We then made our own sums and wrote them out on our white boards. We have also been working in our number books drawing and writing 1 more and 2 more.

In 1A we have continued to monitor and record the temperature every day in our weather station. Some mornings it has been quite chilly!

This week we made trees for our Autumn board and our Winter board. We drew around our hands and cut them out. We used these to make the leaves on our trees. We also cut strips of brown paper and crepe paper to make all different sizes of branches and twigs to add to our trees. We had gathered leaves from our playground and we painted them different autumnal colours. We then carefully pressed them onto paper to make leaf prints. When they are dry, we are going to cut them out and add them onto our trees.

In 1B we have been looking at the seasons. As we are going out for our Autumn walk on Thursday we decided to discuss the different seasons. What makes them different? In what way does the weather change? What do we wear when the weather is warm, when it is cold and when it is rainy etc.? We discussed what months of the year are in Spring, what months of the year are in Summer, what months of the year are in Autumn and what months of the year are in Winter.

We painted a seasons display and we are going to finish painting children on our back drop all wearing the appropriate clothes for the time of year.

In 1C we read our Percy book again and then watched the film, Percy the Park Keeper. We talked about what we liked and what we didn’t like about the book and the film and which of the two we preferred. We used active expressions to vote on our favourite.

You’ve Got Mail!

Hello there!

We have recapped all our sounds this week and gone over all our tricky words. We’ve also been playing lots of sounds games, word matching games, alphabet dominoes etc.

We have also started to write simple “I can” sentences. We have been writing, “I can hop”, “I can skip”, “I can jump.” We can sound out all the words but we also have to remember to start with a capital letter, finish with a full stop and use finger spaces between our words. A lot to remember!

Some of us got our very own reading book this week! We used our marker under every line and we have to remember to use our pointing finger so we can keep track of the words we’re reading. It’s very exciting!

We started to do adding sums this week. We looked at the + and = signs and talked about the words ‘add’, ‘plus’, ‘makes’, ‘all together’. We wrote some sums on our whiteboards and we looked at the number stories of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. Our teachers have put the number stories onto kites and they are pinned up in our classrooms for us to look at and to help us remember.

In topic this week 1A have been learning how to use the school flipcam. We have been making our own weather videos and even though we say so ourselves, we’ve become quite professional! We have continued to check our weather station every morning and have started to take temperature readings and record them in a table. We have noticed that it is getting colder!

We have also been talking about friendship and what makes a good friend. We decided that we would have a ‘caring person’ badge in our class. This means that each person that wears the badge is responsible for looking out for the others in the class.

We have also been learning about the Hindu festival of Diwali and we made our own Rangoli patterns.

In 1B we were talking about traffic and the different sorts of vehicles we might see on the road, so we decided to go out to our school railings and take our own traffic survey. We worked in pairs and used tally marks to note down how many cars, vans, lorries, bikes, police cars, tractors, motor bikes and pedestrians we saw. We totalled all our figures and made a table then transferred this information onto a bar graph.

We also got a surprise parcel through the post! In the parcel were lots of dressing up things for us to play with in our Post Office area. We’ve been wearing all the clothes pretending to be post men and women and we’ve been delivering mail in our new post bag!

In 1C we’ve been looking at all the different characters in the Percy stories. We have read lots and lots of different stories  and this has given us good ideas of all the characters in the stories. We wrote down our ideas and thoughts about the characters on a flipchart. We then had to decide which of the animal characters we are going to investigate as a class!
