Whale whale whale, what do we have here? Our first super P3 Homework Exhibition

WOW! Miss Aitken and I are overwhelmed with the work and creativity of our P3 students Homework Wall Project pieces.

“Well done boys and girls”.

Today we had our first exhibition which gave everyone a chance to share their hard work with their classmates. We have had shoe-box aquariums, badges, facts files, posters, Papier Mâché sea creatures and presentations. The pupils took the chance to give feedback on the fantastic work on display. Check out their work below.

The students were so excited and they loved giving and getting their feedback.

Rowan Gray “someone said mine was epic”.

Wallace Gillespie “I have loads of cool comments”.

Pupils were really positive and enthusiastic about giving their feedback. We have learned so much from each other. I learned that octopus have 3 hearts and 9 brains! This has really inspired us to keep up the good work.

THANK YOU AGAIN P3 FOR  A SUPER START TO OUR HOMEWORK WALL PROJECT!

🙂

Menstrie P3E Scientists

On the 31st of October we conducted an experiment to see the impact pollution has on the Ocean, in particular the effect Co2 has on coral. Using boiled purple cabbage juice, a straw and 2 glass jars we were able to compare two samples. Sample one was the controlled test which had our cabbage juice, we noticed this was a dark purple colour. For sample two we used our breathe which contains a certain amount of Co2 and blew bubbles into the juice to see if anything would happen.

Our observations:

Rebecca King “our juice looks lighter after”

Chloe O’Brien “there was lots of bubbles”

We concluded as a class that the experiment showed that Co2 changed the colour of the second sample. This is known as bleaching and this is one of the serious consequences the coral in the ocean is dealing with. Due to increased pollution and the increase of global warming the coral is becoming more damaged.

In the upcoming weeks we are going to look into how we could try to prevent or reduce bleaching in the ocean.

Autumn Leaves

We have been observing and discussing the late arrival of Autumn this year. We have taken advantage of the great weather to go out and explore the different leaves and colours that are now surrounding us. As part of this we have been able to discuss and link our learning to our habitat and environment learning in our “Under The Sea” topic.

BBC Scotland – Authors Live with Tracey Corderoy and Steven Lenton

On Thursday the 27th of October we were treated to a podcast of Shifty McGifty and Slippery Sam by Tracey Corderoy on BBC Scotland. This was a really exciting opportunity to see the Author of these books and listen to her telling the stories. We have been focusing on using expression in our reading and this was great to see how she brought the story to life using different voices and tones.

Tracey was joined by Steven Lenton who was the illustrator of the books. The pupils were treated to a master class in drawing the character Sam.

We have had great fun learning about the characters and we are looking forward to enjoying the books in class over the next couple of months.

Under the Sea Topic

Since September our topic has been under the sea. First we focused on the location of the continents and the oceans to give us perspective. As part of this we have done some map work and conducted a science experiment to see how the currents of the ocean go around the world.

As you may have seen we voted, designed and created a under the sea wall full of creatures and features of the sea. This brought our learning to the ocean creatures and different habitats that they live in.

Since the October holidays we have been investigated the impact pollution can have on the ocean. We have conducted an oil spillage experiment and we are now focusing on the issue of CO2 in the atmosphere.

November Homework Wall

download-1

The Primary 3 Homework wall was issued last week. Children have to select three tasks from the grid provided. One task from the top row, a second task from the second row and a third task from either.

The first task should be completed and handed in for Monday 7th November.

The second task should be completed and handed in for Monday 21st November.

The third task should be completed and handed in for Monday 28th November.

Children can hand projects in at any earlier date, this is simply a guideline. Any questions/ queries, please do not hesitate to contact me. Spelling/ reading homework will accompany the homework wall.

Dino Bonds

In class we have been using Dino Bonds to help us learn and practise our bonds to 10 and 20. This has been helping us to recall, test our knowledge in a fun and engaging way.

Check out our photos below to see what we have been working on.

Homework guide for Parents and Carers.

Homework plays an important part in every child’s education as learning is lifelong not merely for school hours.

Homework is an area we wish to encourage in a positive way as we believe that your interest, encouragement and sharing of time with your child is of the greatest value in their overall development.

The purposes of homework:

  • It gives children a routine for learning outside of school
  • It encourages self-discipline and individual responsibility
  • It provides the opportunity for individual learning
  • It informs parents of what their child is doing in class
  • It reinforces or revises classroom learning
  • It allows parents to support their child
  • It encourages children to explore sources of information outside of school

Parents should:

  • Provide a suitable environment and time for homework to be completed
  • To know what the school and teachers expect of children.
  • To ensure suitable resources are available to complete given task, eg – pencil, rubber, ruler etc
  • Show interest in what is being done through talking with your child about what and how he/she is learning.
  • To listen to worries and complaints and be patient.
  • Support child to complete work and encourage organised and neat presentation
  • Check and sign
  • Inform school if their child is having difficulty
  • Ask for help and/or guidance

Pupils should:

  • Complete homework on time
  • Take responsibility for returning and asking parents to check and sign
  • To make the time to do homework carefully and well, ensuring best work
  • To plan ahead and Not leave homework till last minute
  • To keep a careful note of what is required and when it is due.
  • To look for help when stuck or frustrated.
  • To make sure to hand in completed homework on (or before) the due date.

Punctuation Puzzles

In p3 we have been working on our use of punctuation in our writing. Here you can see the pupils are busy designing VCOP puzzle pieces to add to our Literacy wall. Each piece has a punctuation mark to help us learn and identify them.
